  • We CUT OPEN the Tire of a Tesla Model X and it was ACTUALLY INTERESTING!
    Was super surprised to learn about the inside of the Tesla tire and grateful I found a Tire Shop that could help me fix this issue. Hopefully this video helps shops that don't know how to fix Tesla flats be confident moving forward. Not everyone can get service done at the Tesla Service station.

    • @dray7984
      @dray7984 Před 5 lety

      @@sleepyearth Not true, I work for a tire manufacturer and tire companies do have contracts with the car manufacturers to produce tires specifically for a certain vehicle. They are usually based off of another model and pretty much look identical but are manufactured specifically to the OE's specifications. Many premium OE tires have a symbol molded onto the sidewall to let customers know that they are in fact the same exact model of tires that the vehicle was shipped with and can usually only be purchased from dealerships. BMW for example uses a star, Audi uses an AO, Mercedes uses an MO, etc. The tire companies are frequently audited by the car manufacturers and the OE tires have stricter quality control guidelines.

      @cardinaloflannagancr8929 Před 6 lety

      yes typical shops could repair a puncture sure, but that is special and not in all tires. Could they cause a problem yeah, glue they use disintegrates or dissolves the foam etc.. Likely the reason for it is the tires are low rolling resistance (firm) and the foam helps soak up noise/vibration. Which is more noticeable since it is not powered by a internal combustion engine.

      Cactus Sensai Doug
      Its not a unique tire. They are Pirelli Scorpion zero asymmetric and you can buy them at tirerack, discount tire and etc. Yes, it isn't a common thing to find in tires but a lot of comfort focused tires have foam in them to reduce road noise. Bet you many expensive luxury cars have a similar tire.

    • @cardinaloflannagancr8929
      @cardinaloflannagancr8929 Před 6 lety

      I hear you but it's funny to say it's both not unique yet is uncommon at the same time. It will start at luxury but trickle down as tires get wider with shorter firmer sidewalls. Sound and vibration dampening does need to be done and replaced properly or it's not going to function.

      It is a "Tesla tire" made by Pirelli specifically for Tesla due to the "proprietary" sound deadening materials used to quiet the road noise created by the stiff run-flat tire carcass. This type of sound deadening isn't used in regular tires, thus the term "Tesla tire".

    Since the tires are low profile(meaning the sidewall heights are small). The foam is there for a couple reasons. One, you get a slightly quieter ride. Two, you do have something to ride on in case of a flat. And most importantly Three, it protects the rim from cracking if you hit a pothole or something of the sort.

    That foam pad in the tires is the "run flat" feature. The foam plus the low profile tire makes it possible to drive on a tire that had no tire pressure in it. The foam takes up space that the air pressure would otherwise occupy.

    • @ChrisLee-yr7tz
      @ChrisLee-yr7tz Před 2 lety

      Nah. I don't think so. The run flat feature is reinforced sidewalls. That foam is totally soft and wouldn't do a thing. Pretty sure it's just to deaden the sound or something like that.
