It's crazy how dangerous patchy light can be. Looks like there some earlier morning shots in the woods (or full tree cover) and everything looks great. But then you have the entries and exits when the sun comes out and it's like... Camouflage ground. You can't perceive the ground at all. Might as well just close your eyes and pray...

I remember minaar jumping over a post a year or two back. Commentators said it was fair game since he didn't touch the ground outside the course

Yeah.. I'd compare it to ball sports (rugby/soccer etc).. Trying to hit a ball that's going out, back into the field of play but in order to do that the athlete has to jump outside and connect with the ball mid-air... Can't connect with the ground outside the lines otherwise it's out, obviously..
I'd say same rules apply here.. Slightly out is good to go I reckon. (obviously wouldn't want to be straightlining switchbacks etc just to stay in, but I guess WC DH tracks don't really have too many of those freeridey sections to have to worry about that scenario)

11.42 According the SX and MX AMA rules (and i have been witnessed the facts) you "illegally" cut the track ONLY when at least one wheel is on the ground.
Jumping is "tolerated" as long is not dangerous.
But you can expect some change in the marking at the next run, also some claims from competitors...

I guess it would come down to luck if you're 2cm to the left or the right in the air. It's really really close, but the line that he draw was not outside of the base of the pole, and that's what matters, not the tip.
