My grandad used to work for Brighton busses in Lewis road. I can remember going with him as a small child to the depot and taking a single decker through the bus wash. After that we went into the canteen for lunch and a chat with the other drivers.

When I drove a bus in service with that gearbox, we drivers just banged them through the gears! None of this letting the revs die down rubbish as we didn't have time! Especially around the London area! I drove a Leyland Atlanteans, Leyland Olympians of various years, Leyland Nationals and Dennis Darts to name just a few. All with semi or fully auto `boxes. One company I worked for also had coaches with manual boxes .. I could drive them as I also had a LGV1 licence but the crews that drove them guarded the jobs very closely as they were higher paid!
Like your bus Fuzz, its a beaut!

Get someone to let you have a good, long drive of the best bus ever Fuzz, a Routemaster. We used to start in auto 2nd (which is the same position as 4th), push the gear lever to 3rd when it changed up, get the most out of that then pull it back to 4th.
Leaving it in auto only it would change into top too early.
Of course with the wheels up front, point them around the corner and the rest would follow without having to worry about the overhang.

I wish you could have explained the gear shift mechanism. I remember the same gear selector on Bristols and that was a pre-selector so you could just whack through the gears and each time you lifted off it would engage the next gear. Similarly on the Leyland Nationals I remember drivers just keeping their foot flat to the floor while shifiting and you would get a rev-out while it passed through neutral. So I am not sure what sort of gear set up this is where you have to match revs on the shifting in what appears to be a semi-auto.
