@@markb1487we live now not 20 years ago, we don’t vote based on leaders from the past, we vote based on the leaders of today, at least when Blair and Brown were in power we had low interest rates, food prices were lower, we could live and work anywhere in the EU, we weren’t so divided, immigration was actually lower (200,000 under Labour, 750,000 per year under the Tories) NHS was in the top 10 of healthcare providers, and we had economic growth. A vote for the Tories is a vote for our country’s death.

That more British people wake up to the fact that we have to be the change we want to see in the world *before the change we want to see will come. Thus, who we are and what values we have make us complicit in what sort of change has occurred to date. So Voltaire was right when he said: "People will cease to commit atrocities only when they cease to believe absurdities." I've watched that play out over the years, and I'm convinced in that these cynical, self-serving, entitled, sociopathic narcissists being able to convince the British electorate to believe not just lies, but absurd ones at that, is a source of a lot of our woes at home and abroad. It's both sad, and frightening too, because none of the negativity was necessary. It was all done to deflect from the fears of the already asset wealthy that they wouldn't get more wealthy. So they had to lie, cheat, and steal to make sure that they stayed on top of hill of destruction they created in the process. And a big chunk of people went along with it, ended up under the feet of those charlatans, with the others who they cheered as they were thrown on the scrapheap in the years before them. Chomsky is hitting the nail on the head that consent for our own suffering was manufactured. The problem is, that people will now want to sweep it all under the carpet, and pretend none of it happened. How convenient, but Reality doesn't care about that. We can keep on stuffing the dead victims of our follies into suitcases to chuck in the Thames of Public forgetting, but they will keep on floating to the surface, until we stop believing absurdities. Then, and only then can we make can progress of repairing and rebuilding the damage done over nearly the last 50 years, and start behaving like a real community again.
I think that's odds on my friend, this really does feel like an echo of '97, after 18 years of Tory Misrule. Let's just hope that Starmer dosen't become this generation's Tony Blair....

Liz, I have said elsewhere. the Sunak's have their daughters enrolled in a fancy California college, and the fall term starts in August. The timing couldn't be better, they can surrender their faux Georgian mansion near Ripon, and bask by their swimming pool in some upmarket suburb of Los Angeles.

The present incumbent has purposefully chosen an election date that suits HIM, HIS BUSINESS interests and HIS FAMILY. Best to have the summer to turn the page and re-deploy to the US for the next chapter of his drier (?) 'fortunes'. It is also a choice that can allow HIM a measure of British personal and political retribution, while greeting Americans on Independence Day!

It's interesting to read the comments recently. What's even more interesting is that they've been roughly the same for years! Nothing will change when Labor is in power. Tory's can then bang on and blame them for BREXIT not working. Labor watched the whole game and could have averted disaster by holding a second referendum as the EU demanded! Why didn't they do it?
There is still no alternative party that could make a difference to the EU.
