Intense 1960s Vietnam Protest Leader Kicked Out Because He Wasn't Violent Reveals Why It Failed

- Carl Oglesby was a great storyteller, public speaker, debater, author, and staunch political activist. Among many other activities, he became president of the leftist student organization Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in 1965.
Politically he was not a left-wing radical or a right wing radical. He didn’t like the corporate conservatives as he called them and he didn’t like left-wing socialists either. And he was staunchly against the welfare state which he believed would weaken the American democracy. He was more of a libertarian and a person who asked difficult and challenging questions about America at that time. Although in his young life he was a staunch anti-Communist, he began to question the Vietnam War and became an political leader against America’s involvement and leadership in that war.
As he became more and more radical in his 1960s antiwar views the Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver asked him to serve as his running mate on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket in that year’s presidential election. Carl said no.
In 1969, he was forced out of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) by leaders saw him as being too bourgeois.
My interview with him was touching for me because I found so much of what he said and how he said it, absolutely fascinating. I am hopeful that my subscribers who watch this will find him as interesting as I do.
He died of lung cancer at his home in New Jersey in 2011. I want to thank Carl for putting the effort into this interview with me and answering the questions as he did in such emotional detail.

@Caleb Oglesby your father seemed like an incredible man! He is able to describe his time and place in the turbulent 60’s like no one I’ve ever heard before. As a guy in his twenties who is politically active I feel like right now is so unique but listening to Vietnam and civil rights protestors talk about sixties reminds me that some things never change… I would have loved to sat down and spoken with him.

While stationed at Camp Pendleton in the Marines I witnessed a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) get kicked out for not being aggressive or "Gung Ho" enough, smh'. This story is totally believable...

@@williampierce4513 Yeah', tell me about it. I was shocked when he told me that. I even read some of his "paperwork". This was around 1992-93 so obviously by now I don't remember every detail, but yeah'. Also, keep in mind the Marine Corps is the only branch that can and will discharge you from service strictly based on your "appearance". I know or sounds weird but it's a fact.
What a great interview! I vividly remember the 60s, but you rarely hear it from this perspective. I was 12 in 1968 and very much into politics, out of necessity. My brother was in Vietnam at the time and I was convinced that I would be drafted and sent there at 17. The war was constantly escalating and I couldn't believe that it would ever end.
I also remember the body count on the news every night. Because more Viet Cong were getting killed than Americans, they made us believe that we were winning. I remember the saying, "My country, right or wrong". I remember Nixon's promise to end the war during his re-election campaign, and his slogan, "Nixon, now more than ever", and I completely bought into it because I wanted this war to end. I also remember Watergate, and fully believed Nixon knew nothing about it. When he resigned was the exact moment I became clinical.
I really wanted to join these protesters because I believed we had no business fighting someone else's war, and young American men shouldn't be dying for a country halfway around the world, and I didn't want my brother or myself to be one of them. But the violence during demonstrations was frustrating because I knew they wouldn't be winning anyone over that way. It was a confusing time and completely divided the country.

I worked in the industry before getting married as a fixer and camera man and a few guys I knew showed me his work. But it was nearly impossible to find outside of his PBS work from when PBS was actually quite neutral....... I really miss working in the business though. But my wife at the time hated me spending so much time away in dangerous locations. Luckily she didn't stop me from working on the long way round with Russ Malkin. But I had to tum down the long way down because my first was due. But now that I'm single again and my girls are older I'm looking to get back into it because I miss the travel and adventure.
With all we have with historical information and perspective, why are we continually rinsing and repeating catastrophic failures while expecting different results without recognizing the insanity of it all?
We keep empowering the same scoundrels…however, I must say I think this November may offer a way out from under the Koch Heads holding us hostage and impeding progress in the name of big oil, big coal, big steel and big copper. Their jig may be up.

At 62 my head is still always somewhere in those two critical decades, the 60s and 70s, and I see things everyday that have direct connection to the things that happened then. To what is left of my days until the end, I will continue to try to unravel the very many threads that wove the fabric of an incredibly complicated time.
The youth also started the #NODAPL movement in 2016, and it was targeted and deceased children's moms that started BLM. We have to yell when people don't listen. 50 years later and they are still killing us. It's fcking tedious and I'm tired. We tried putting flowers in their gun barrels and look what happened.
For me I think I've reached that burn out part, finally. Literally the cops ran me down in the street in 2011and now I'm forever in a wheel chair. That seems to be their MO nowdays, just run unfavorable pedestrians over with your car, out of nowhere, not even during a protest. No lawyer would touch the case lol
I still do stuff online but it takes the wind out of your sails and my boots on the ground days are over. Now I'm the research and propaganda department lol You watch things march on as if none of our sacrifices had been made. Are you tired my dude? I'm so tired lol

I believe the war , which is part of my history , was all about MONEY ........ 1 Huey - $250000, etc.
It was absolutely a con to funnel taxpayer money into the defense industry. For no good purpose except racketeering.

BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO..... I am 74 years old, this man is absolutely eloquent in the description of the experiences and hopes of my generation. I wish this could go on Twitter and every 20, 30, 40 year old could start to think about the Real Reality of this government. We created the Environmental Protection Agency and here we are 60 Years later with polluted air, water, soil and our food supply is a disaster. When the jobs went to China and gutted the middle class I hoped for a real revolution, alas we got Trump and Jan. 06. Now we have Gates buying all the farmland with no commitment to producing food without chemicals and doing crop rotation. We desperately need a government that is not corrupted by capitalism. We need a capitalism that want to support the EPA, public education and cultural activities.

Bach in the 60s, I attended a local college chapter meeting, naively thinking it was an open discussion, asked a (to me) serious question for clarification. I was immeadiatly shut up on a procedural technicality and the basis that I was not already a member of the SDS and thus ineligible to participate in the meeting or discussion. The tone made it clear I was not welcome. I must say, I looked more like a republican John Bircher to them. I looked like "the enemy". It was one if many times I had been judged erroneously based upon surface appearances. The SDS was the victim of both it's inexperience and it's insularity.
Two years later, I was in Viet Nam. (Not because I wanted to be there - few of us did)
No, we weren't baby killers.
Wars are started by arrogant old men who send the the young men and women to fight in it. One way or another, the people always pay the price for/of war.

The Vietnam Protest group was anti-war but not anti-violence. Well, that's ironic.
I think I'm beginning to understand the esteem you have for Carl Oglesby, Dave. Such a calm, razor sharp lens through which to look back on what happened in our brush with that cyclical "60s phenomenon" that Carl said just happens every few generations.
And even though they probably irritated the calm and very serious-minded Carl with their outlandish pranks and their frivolous irreverence, the Yippies actually had a very similar view to Carl's on a great many of the things he most disliked in the SDS and in the wider movement. Especially violence. Some of the Yippies knew the Weathermen when their violence was still theoretical, but that was (and remains) the great fork in the road for all of us. What means justify what ends?

Again, extremely powerful content David. It’s incredible how many of your documentaries are directly intertwined with current events regarding youth movements, inner city struggle etc.
I was born in 55 and I grew up on the viet nam war! It was very personal to me as I had friends who were forced to go there. Some of he stories I heard were dreadful , and damaging to anyone who was there! War is ugly and we knew just how ugly! I was scared for every American ,not only who fought in that war , but their families that were damaged by it. So many losses!
My parents were Kennedy worshipers, as was the whole family. I watched Bobby get murdered live on tv. It really scared me. It was so shocking and I’m still a little shook when I think about it.
It was good to hear this man speak. I remember the movements, the feelings in all of them. Especially the "home made" elements of them. Thank you. Everything's more violent now, more fantasy-driven. Maybe our bunch was successful exposing the two faces of power, "the hand that mocked them and the heart that fed."
Well, certainly the police have become more violent - or is that we just have a new way to watch them that we didn't have back then? We are just watching them do what they always did, and when the internet came along and put a spotlight on their outrageous behavior, it made it that much harder for them to get away with it. Derek Chauvin would have gone free without the internet, bet on it.

I was a wee lad in my single digits from 1960 to 1969.
I knew about the American war in Vietnam. My dad was a journalist, so the b&w TV news was on every evening.
Anyway thanks for this extended interview.

I don't know about all his conjecture of "trying the electorate first" before turning to violence. I remember the history of Labor organization in the early part of the Twentieth Century (and much further back in our country and in others) that peaceful organization was always met with force and until blood was spilt not much (politically) could happen.
Full disclosure: I'm not for violence, I'm just for realizing that history gives really good cues for the future. Also I'm no historian nor a Marxist dialecticist nor an economist but it sure does seem every grand movement/transformative uprising meets the its match in Capital/Status Quo/Traditionalism and it's a violent dance.

Wow Mr Hoffman that’s amazing because it’s so different from everything I thought about those protesting that war. Your written description of Mr Oglesby is equally thoughtful & insightful. You made him a complete human being who had reasonable views on other subjects & focused on the ending the war instead of a caricature of a hippie who thought he had all the answers on every issue that involved radically destroying & changing every aspect of our system.
Oglesby was so reasonable & Eldridge Cleaver obviously respected him & saw his leadership abilities in a world where being reasonable was sometimes cast aside in favor of who yelled loudest.

Interesting how, in his telling, LBJ just magically dropped his re-election bid in March of ‘68, “opening the way for Bobby Kennedy”. It was Eugene McCarthy’s lonely, gutsy, and shockingly strong challenge to the President in New Hampshire, starting in Dec. ‘67, that made LBJ drop out. And multiple contemporary accounts of those years make clear McCarthy only ran because RFK (and McGovern) wouldn’t. Given RFK’s undeniable talents and appeal, and his tragic end, it’s uncomfortable but necessary to point out that he doesn’t deserve to be put high on the white stallion he is retrospectively placed on. He didn’t have the guts to make the challenge when Lowenstein and others were begging him to, but was happy to swoop in once the “king” (LBJ) had been toppled by McCarthy and the opportunities clear for all to see. (And RFK actually acknowledged this, see Doris Kearns Goodwin’s An Unfinished Love Story among other sources… and DKG and her husband were definitely in the Kennedy camp.)

OMG! This is one of the saddest, most depressing things I've seen in a long time, and that in a period not short of sad depressing things to watch! 😥
Its incredible that how a humble social movement can flourish then as time marches, certain individuals want to take it to an extreme. I'm 24 yrs and participated in marches in the last 5 years. I can attest that there's internal fighting in movements all because a small handful want to amp up the environment that may result in risky actions and behavior.

Enjoy both part 1 and part 2 of Carl Oglesby interview. as you know the 1960's were an extraordinary and turbulence times to be a live in Carl touch on some very interesting points of the antiwar movement. As you may remember The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, that ran on CBS from fall of 1967 to the spring of 1969 got the axe Tom and Dick were fired from CBS for being too controversial about the Vietnam War and other topics of the times. May Carl and his father be at peace with one another in the afterlife. Carl Oglesby July 30, 1935 - September 13, 2011, Thanks David Hoffman.
In an alternate universe they got an RFK Presidency with an MLK in the cabinet. Would have fixed a lot of social problems and set us on a far different trajectory. Brilliant interviewee. Thanks for the video.

This guy's assessment of progressivism in the 60s is near perfect. The biggest problem was that ours is a spoiled generation--thinking we could actually fix tragic human failings built into human nature and institutions since the dawn of time--especially that it could be done quickly. All the people who actually made a step forward in civilization realized change against gigantic forces takes generations and often entails total sacrifice (you know, gradualists such as MLK, Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony) and it also entails seeing your own mistakes. When your generation fails you MUSTN't just retreat--you need to learn from your own shortcomings and keep going. The perfect is not just the enemy of the possible--it generates backlash (the cultural attitudes that fuel such monstrosities as Trump).

dults. Didn't anyone agree with the SDS?

Very interesting inside take on what was going on in the mid-late 60’s with the protests. I agree that Bobby Kennedy would have become president, and what’s interesting is that he would be considered a conservative right wing politician in today’s radical left political climate. I was in college when he was assassinated, and remember I being so distraught and feeling hopeless. Great interview and insight.

I'm Gen X born 1971 to young boomers in California Bay Area. My dad was a conscientious objector, and my grandmother counselled thousands of young men about the draft, then about registering for the draft, over decades.
This is fascinating. I'm interested in these topics that I feel are widely avoided by boomers.
I have read and heard about the strongly misogynistic thread running through the antiwar and civil rights movements. Maybe you can point me to a film that addresses that.
Sometimes there's discussion about the way the boomers were raised, which was a very new thing because of strong economy, the new phenomenon called "teenagers", that y'all were more sheltered and privileged than any previous generation in the US. Thus the innocence and naivety you describe.
Nixon sure did show his ass with Watergate. I think it was made much clearer that politicians run their own agendas and railroad the people. I agree with his assessment of the impact of Watergate.
Hippie/yippee/peacenik boomers have changed the culture in countless ways, and growing up in the shadows of that influence has kept me fascinated my whole life. Sometimes judgmental as well. I believe the romantic, the nostalgic, the whole idealistic view of those feelings of community have really tarnished your legacy. I went to see Across the Universe with a boomer, and he came out in tears, kept saying It was just like that! I had to disbelieve him because honestly, when is real life like a freaking musical? C'mon.

I see some striking similarities between Vietnam war and todays war in Ukraine - especially when he said that majority of population didnt want the war but it was continuing anyway because the goverment wanted so... The reaction of american police to antiwar protests was pretty much same as what they do in Russia these days. Also the majority of russian population is just indifferent to the war or keep saying some jingoist explanation they learned from TV... The most interisting thing to me in this video was that the protests in 60s in America were held by students because adult/old people simply didnt care. Its always students who organize large protests like if the old people of certain age dont care about politics/democracy/ideologies and take interest only in their own everyday life, going to work tommorow, watching football after work...i guess thats the "grey majority".

I wonder what he would have\did think of two of the founders of the weathermen being instrumental in the springboarding of Obama into the presidency and becoming part of the establishment?
His description is almost identical to what's going on today. People are extremely violent now and it could be a minor difference of opinion and the savagery comes out. One could argue its worse because of the internet.
I am sorry that he did not get to see what is happening now to try to protect Democracy. He would be delighted, I hope. Carl Oglesby suggested that what happened in the 1860s happened again 100 years later in the 1960s and maybe would happen in another 100 years. It is indeed, albeit a few years earlier. As one great politician said:

Just like the original civil war ended and time for reconstruction to occur, where was this man? Once the revolutionary talk died down and the second reconstruction was in dire need of started suddenly all of the older generation became the people they hate. I see older people using l redhotic of the anti war movement to justify hate or even anti democratic behavior. Just like after the civil war, when reconstruction came and black peoples had at least a sliver social mobility and started moving north away from the lands that traumatized 3-6 generations where was the abolitionist? They were voting to end reconstruction cuz too many black people where moving north. Same thing happened after the 60’s except they never saw through. Bobby Kennedy was like Lincoln being shot in the ford. Now our generation is suck with the ugly decay of the 60’s but no candidates that represent us. It’s always some old person warped by time who can’t see why the world needs that reconstruction since they’re too comfortable with the way they grew up. This guy thought that he couldn’t do shit and left but he had the choice to be able to leave it alone. If you were gay black or trans that wasn’t the case. What what is the point of the civil rights moment after all that if the same group of people want to strip gay people of their rights and have left education in. Shambles and have advocated to the dismantling of American democracy. And now we lack the larger majority. The older generations suck in their ways if half baked solutions still out vote us. And when they don’t they gerrymander us or they use social media to fill us with propaganda or they defend equations so the poor are too uneducated to understand what is going on. Clearly the Institutions at play y’all’s were rigging against just rebranded thenselfs as the Republican Party once y’all got complacent and the movement to fight them was a joke of its former self. Now we got compliment old men who can’t see why we still need that reconstruction on the left and the same old insinuations y’all were fighting in the first place in the right. We don’t have a MLK or a civil rights leader. Y’all were handed the torch after all this work and snuffed it out when y’all got too scared. That’s how you know y’all lost.

Anyone else feel like the Overton window has moved so much that this conservative from the 60s sounds like the liberals who claim to be the left today?
It seems the anti-war movement did not have the spiritual and ethical integrity the Civil Rights movement had. Though it was anti-war it was not non-violent.
Many of the anti-war people loathed the idea of being personally drafted/doing any kind of military service. So it was rooted in narcissism. Whereas the civil rights movement was about empathy for others.
What if Hoffman had people who protested the Mexican-American War (I kid).
Thoreau, refused to pay his taxes and was jailed. Met a nice drunk there to talk with. Finally his friends bailed him out.
Maybe it’s moving away from One nation under God
