Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller comes to the big screen in this adaptation directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Timothy Spall, and Alan Rickman. Embittered at having been wrongly imprisoned and determined to seek vengeance against his accusers due to the grim fate that befell his wife and daughter while he was incarcerated, ex-convict Sweeny Todd (Depp) returns to his hometown and opens a modest barber shop. It's sad but she's also such a selfish and manipulative character that by the end I didn't feel too bad for her. When you think about it, had she been honest to him from the beginning then no innocent people would have had to die. She caused him more pain by keeping the truth from him.

At first I thought it was just for comedy but now I think it shows what affection he had for Lovett. That deep down, he might have felt SOMETHING for her, but do to the fact that his heart is just too full of anger and vengance, he wouldn’t be able to really love her, but him agreeing to go on a picnic with her and Toby and affectionately touching her leg, I believe was his own subtle way of showing her that this would be the closest thing he could ever come to caring for her.

@@theboogeyman2590 It is originally a musical and you should listen to the original soundtrack from 1979 or try to find a stage production somewhere online cause (no offense to this movie) but the original musicals are always so much better than movie adaptations because the movies have to cut out so much from the stage production. Fun fact: in the original Sweeney Todd production, Mrs. Lovett is Angela Lansbury, AKA Mrs. Potts from the original Beauty and the Beast

1:51 I remember seeing this in theaters, expecting the movie to be terrible, but ended up loving it. This scene really blew me away not only by how colorful the beginning of this scene was, but by how quickly everything fades back into that gloomy dark overcast look of the city life. The overall tone and look of this movie amazes me still. So well done and beautiful.

To me this scene/song is one of the saddest of all considering what happens later on in the film.. It's like Mrs Lovett really wants to be happy with the man she's been fantasizing about for years and he just rejects her completely, even in her daydreams. I know that he was still in love with his wife, and that Lovett was going about the whole 'making him fall in love with her' act all wrong, but I still find it heartbreaking that he showed her no affection what-so-ever. If only the end of the film was them living happily by the sea.. ;-;
Although, I've got to say, looking at it from a different point of view, this scene is quite funny just because of Sweeney's I-Hate-All-Of-You-What-Am-I-Even-Doing-Here? face throughout the whole song. xD

That's one sided love for ya, unrequited love. It happens, people fall in love with someone but their love is not returned, because they don't love that person and/or they love someone else. You can't force love, it's given. In some ways I agree with you, after he got his revenge for killing the judge that ruined his life he could have moved on and found peace by the sea with Mrs Lovett. That ending could have worked for me, but this isn't my story so it ended on a darker note.
Story of Sweeney Todd was set in 1846, volleyball didn't come around until 1895, 49 years later.

It's so great
It's incredible how the colour details shift as the film progresses. As the meat-pie shop gets more customers and Sweeney Todd becomes less focused on his vengeance against the Judge and just bides his time with casual murder as he waits for the next opportunity, there's gradually more colour in the scenes. It's still muted, but compared to the almost noir-film aspect in relation to the bright and colourful flashbacks, it is significant as well as symbolic.
And even in the costumes, while the fantasy has everyone in brighter colours in a colourful world, Sweeney Todd is always in the black and white colour scheme
I actually think Jonny depp is the most amazing actor of all time I can’t take sweeny todd seriously without thinking how amazing he is 👁👄👁

Tim Burton does such a terrific job visually that I never realized how beautiful this song is. listening to just the music will give you a totally different experience. I would always skip this song when listening to the soundtrack, but I heard it on shuffle a few days ago and realized it's one of Sondheim's best. a masterpiece.
If you've been listening to the film soundtrack, might I suggest the original cast recording? Most of the songs in he film, including this one, have cuts that affect their musical structure; although the cuts make sense in a cinematic sense. By The Sea packs a much greater punch on the OCR.

No it doesn't, it's just shows acceptance because he's still got that scowl on his face and he just as quickly pulls his hand away from her.
It's physical subtext. Even though he constantly appears to be terrible towards throughout the whole movie. He is unable to keep his hand there for a long time because he doesn't want to give away that he actually cares about her, in his weird way. That little touch was all that was needed because from people who don't share a lot, a little is all that's needed.

All she wanted was a family. She's been some for years until she met the guy that she's been fantasizing about. She wanted to have a family and would do anything for her family. Sadly she was going about it wrong

Hannah Heartsy Errr if she did that, she wouldn't deserve her happy ending. And the "love" she would get from Todd would be fake and not because he chose to. It is cruel to force someone to love you, when they are in love with someone else. Feelings can't be helped, but actions can be helped.

I love the costume design in this film, her outfits in this are a great contrast to the rest of the movie🖤
Her costumes in this scene are not only more colorful than her standard attire but also from a later time period! The look of her “real” dresses primarily pulls from the 1840’s, with pleated bodices and bell shaped skirts. However, the costumes in her fantasy sequence were primarily based off later Victorian 1870’s seaside dresses (see the bustle), with the exception of her 1880’s/1890’s style bathing costume.
