While my strategy in the previous take worked, I wanted to expand the arte variety throughout the fight a bit. Although I quickly remembered why I stuck with a small selection previously.. Wingal counters from considerably few amount of hits, he's quick to get off-axis and LOVES to spam Overlimit!
Wingal is far from a hard boss, especially when he's alone. But optimizing against him is tricky. Guarding will always force him to use Kamikaze which is an easy backstep and both of his counters are easy to avoid with proper spacing. But the thing about the counters is that they're entirely different, he's more likely to go for Hououtenku which actually requires a dodge so I always count on that.
I aim to trigger counters with anything that pushes Wingal away from me to create enough space so I'm out of Dankuuken range. I find Hououtenku easier to backstep with a little bit of distance as well.
What makes this so hard to optimize is if I get a late counter, by the time I see which one it is I'm already in idle to prepare for Hououtenku. However if it turns out to be Dankuuken instead I've already dropped my chain and would have to wait to trigger a new crit chain (I scrapped all takes with dropped chains as my goal was to optimize).
Leave him alone for even the tiniest moment and he'll use Overlimit, so keeping an aggressive play style is important, but it's also necessary to ever-so-slightly delay your next arte after he counters (especially if it's Dankuuken) as the artes are over so quickly he's prone to insta counter often.
Remaining idle when he's ready to attack is also a risk as he can just end the fight with a Majinken. So keeping him staggered is important, I made optimizations to my chains to remove all break out windows (towards the end of the fight, kept the old versions for variety at the beginning).
Side swaps are frequent thanks to Rising Phoenix counters, which on longer distances can interfere with quicksteps.. At 0:31 you can see I attempt to do my usual "dance" before resuming my assault, and Wingal's landing spot turned an intended backstep into a frontstep.. This is a bit annoying and out of my control but it served the same purpose in the end.
Reacting to a Dankuuken counter right after makes up for it, by delaying a Shingetsusen I managed to extend my chain which I'm very happy about! I always try to throw a Wide Shot at the end of my chains in case this happens, and I wanted to have at least one chain extension in the fight.

Man those Rising Phoenix back steps dodges were very cool, it's impressive how you could so seamlessly slide them into a combo without really going idle!

Thanks! I specifically labbed the combo to trigger a counters during knockback so I can either react to dodging RP or extend after SW!

Such oppressive Alvin gameplay; my man Wingul can't even breathe 😔
On a somewhat unrelated note, I just noticed that the language the Celestians speak in Eternia (Melnics) is the same as Long Dau in Xillia since I recognized some of the words Wingul is saying :o

At least he's having fun as he's clearly giggling every time he uses Hououtenku 😇
Oh yeah I remember reading somewhere a while ago it's the same in Eternia but I've not played it (yet) so I've never heard it elsewhere, but that is a neat little throwback!
