  • Not sure what to call this. The icon on my desktop says one thing while the Discord page says another! Either way I can tell you it's AWESOME! This is a virtual arcade you can explore (and play!) in VR all powered by Unreal Engine 4 and MAME.
The attention to detail is amazing with some very detailed arcade cabinets to view up close and personal. Oh and of course you can play them too! This is all using MAME in the background to emulate these games and can be played with most X-input controllers (I'm using an 8-bitdo SN30 Pro BT here)
This should work with most PC VR headsets (I'm using an Oculus Rift S) that support OpenVR (or SteamVR?) and while it will require a decent mid-range GPU it shouldn't need anything too crazy by the looks of it. It's running just fine on my Radeon RX 6750 XT 12GB. I believe they did say it requires 32GB of RAM though. I have 32GB of RAM myself but if anyone has run this with less let me know.
Installation is simple. Just download the ~8GB Zip file and Unzip that wherever you want. You'll have an EXE file along with some sub folders including a ROM folder. Running the EXE file will put you right into the action with all the arcade machines attract modes running away but if you want to actually play a game you'll need to provide the corresponding ROM files in the ROM folder. Just make sure you read the manual (again found in the Discord page) to follow the exact naming of each game. To play a game "grab" the coin box with your middle finger on your VR controller. This will start the ROM in MAME for that game. My 8-bitdo SN30 Pro in X-input mode worked right out of the box without any setup. Select to insert credits and start to... well, start! I'm guessing any X-input controller should work. Obviously some kind of arcade stick would be ideal.
What an awesome idea and it's amazing how much work has gone into this. The arcade cabinets are modelled very well with different shapes to each game with all the correct side art, bezel art, marquees and control panels all being perfectly captured. I was amazed how well this just runs. It loads up surprisingly fast and just seems to work right out of the box with any setup!

I can launch the program from a shortcut on my desktop and put on my VR headset and it USUALLY works. But sometimes I found if I did this there would be nothing in the headset despite seeing the 3D world being rendered on my monitor complete with tracking! If I loaded into my Oculus hub first, select my Monitor 1 to view my desktop and then launch the RetroVRArcade shortcut from there it would work everytime. Trying to launch from the Oculus previously played window would fail to launch. This is also true with EmuVR so that is perhaps more an issue with the Oculus hub thingy more than anything. It seems only "official" games with launch from that list. Anyway, again just launching from desktop and then putting my VR headset on would work most of the time. But if you find you can't see anything in the headset try launching the program from within your VR headset using your virtual desktop and VR controller as a mouse pointer to double click the shortcut.

A full Flynn’s arcade build with this engine would be amazing! Cool program!

Ridiculously impressed! There is an arcade in a local mall and they are all original cabinets and an NES hooked up to a CRT with a Zapper. Planning to go in a few weeks.

I'm happy that everyone is so excited about this game, but there are too many videos available making it sound as if it's extremely easy to install and run. While the truth is really that you also have to figure out how and where to get all of the MAME roms from the correct set. And if you don't want the entire 60GB romset on your drive, that you'll spend hours sorting out the correct roms from the available sets which isn't easy at all.
Then there is setting up the input. If (and only if) you have an XInput capable controller will the controller be automatically set up. If you don't, then there is little to no help to get you going.
Once it's all running, it's really fun to play around with. The latest version even has smooth positioning which is amazing!

Yeah for me getting it running was easy and my 8bitdo SN30 BT being in X-input mode just worked so I kinda assumed most controllers would just work. I'll just find the ROMs as I need them for the games I want to play. But if someone wanted to they could share a ROMset just for this. Kinda a grey area though of course and yeah that's a lot of storage space but I mean there's a lot of games here and most won't want them all. So far I've only got a handful of ROMs here.

@@MN12BIRDI ended up adding the game to Steam and using the Steam input mapping to match the only keys retro vr arcade knows about (WASD and ZXCV). Eventually I found an xinput controller which is much easier.
Nobody will share a romset because everybody is scared of getting caught. Retro VR Arcade takes roms from two different romsets (0.139 and 0.139u1) but the documentation doesn't mention which rom comes from which set. You can simply copy the entire set on but I'm not willing to waste that much space.
