When the Sentinel single was released including the Early Stages "B side" many fans found this closer to their expectations of a TB sequel than the one which materialised. The de-trevored bootleg featured 'leaked' demos recorded with Tom Newman. Mike's decision to leave Virgin for WEA probably led to Horn's involvement and a lasting shift in Mike's sound which didn't please everyone who knew and loved the old Mike. Beyond TBII Horn's influence can be heard right up to RTO. Mike's former unique guitar sound doesn't return and the untamed production becomes uniformly more simplified, less flamboyant and surprising. Despite the disappointment of die hards it has to be noted that TBII was Mike's best selling album since the original and came nearly 10 years after the success of Crises. It attracted a lot of new fans who were previously unaware of Mike's music.
I think Weightless is more refined and developed post-Trevor, but by contrast parts like Clear Light lost some of their Amarok-style analogue warmth and emotion.
