  • Diggle Diaries: An attempt to film all daylight running freight and interesting workings from Diggle Junction. Situated on the picturesque Trans-Pennine, Manchester to Huddersfield and Leeds route, Diggle Jn lies at the top of a steep incline leading into Standedge Tunnel. Providing beautiful scenery, varied freight and trains working hard up the hill, there aren’t many better places for a bit of trainspotting.
    This month includes:
    - 69002 hitches a ride on the Drax
    - 37425 gives ex-TPE 68 a ride
    - TPE Class 68's enter penultimate month of operations
    - Freightliner loco moves
    - And much more...
    Thanks for watching!

    THE SIGNALS !
Your piece of film at 15:30 is not clear enough to see exactly which track the green signal relates too, or even the exact position of the white lights which may be above the green signal ! Firstly signals should be placed to the left of the track that they refer too, which can require the aid of a gantry to ensure they are to the left, when there is insufficient room between two tracks to put the signal post there.
    JUNCTION INDICATORS
A green of course means the line is clear. If this signal is just before a junction, then there should also be Junction indicators on top of the actual signal. These are in the form of fingers of 5 white lights (when illuminated). The number of "fingers" and the angle of each "finger" relates geographically to the track layout ahead. If the main route is set this only requires the main signal to show an aspect none of the fingers would be illuminated. But if any diverging route is set, then one of the "fingers" will also illuminate to reveal which of the optional tracks the train is routed too.
JUNCTION INDICATORS RELATE TO GEOGRAPHICAL LAYOUT OF THE JUNCTION AHEAD.
There can be a maximum of six fingers on a junction signal, indicating a maximum of 6 optional routes in ADDITION to the main track the signal relates too. Fingers pointing to the left are for tracks diverging to the left. Fingers pointing to the right are for diverging tracks to the right. Further these fingers (if there are more than one) are read top to bottom in relation to routes left to right !!!
    GROUND SIGNAL ????
I can see no evidence of any ground signals, which are normally only around 18 inches above the ballast. Further with a main green aspect showing there should NOT be a ground signal for that track.
    TRAP POINTS !
The Engineers two vehicle train appears to be running on the "Wrong" line. Which must mean the track it is on, is signalled for bi-directional working. Normally in Britain trains drive on the left like the roads. The "loop" to the right has one interesting feature visible a "Trap point" which is currently set to deliberately derail any train trying to come towards the camera.
For precise information on signals you'll have to get more precise film footage in future, of the actual signal. And if a Junction signal, film of the track layout ahead as well !!!!
FOR THE RECORD: I'm an ex BR Mechanical Engineer, which also required me to be qualified to drive trains. Indeed I've also been a Signalman (mechanical & early computer boxes), & worked for a number of railways around the World.
