HDMI mod, IPS screen, all good... but where are the dope battery alternatives?
None 😢 thing will die in 3 hours still...sucks that no one makes batteries of oem quality as well.
They don't exist.
Yeah, pretty much every aftermarket PSP battery sucks. My brother said so too as it’s hard not to go 30 minutes without dying. Let’s hope for something the GBA has and a Type-C mod for quick and convenient charging.
Some people on reddit did some heavy research and concluded that the Cameron Sino batteries are the best at 4½-5h battery life. Ostent batteries gave 4-4½h. The rest are mostly trash.
There is a battery mod that involves removing the optical drive and converting that space, plus the original battery case, to hold a much larger battery. The battery used is a 6050100 lithium polymer battery, and a search for "PSP 6050100 imgur" will get you a visual guide. I have done this mod myself on my PSP 3000 and the battery life you gain is unreal - I haven't been able to play long enough in a single sitting to drain it, and that includes a couple 10-hour plus day trips as a car passenger -- and the battery meter was still reading at over half at the end of the day. Note that you do have to disassemble an existing PSP battery to extract the control logic board, but it really isn't a difficult process.
3:32 ...That's a micro HDMI port not a mini (which is wider but not as tall). I'd thought I'd mention it so anyone who doesn't look to closely at an amazon listing winds up buying the wrong cable.
You're first, I just wanted to also mention it
Sad thing is, it looks like a mini HDMI would have fit with a little filing and is a much better connector.
@@PatrickOuthier miniHDMI won't ever fit, because this is not a miniHDMI, it's microHDMI which is a smaller connector
@@Schabik1990, he most surely meant that they should have used miniHDMI port on a PCB, as it supposedly would fit through the IR window with only a bit of a filing, but leaving less of a gap overall.
@@HYBRID_BEING I can agree on that, but it won't fit, it's too wide.
15:10 oh god, getting flashbacks of spending hours trying to get the screen completely clean and dust free in absolute frustration when I was doing PSP housing swaps in my teen years.
Man the white PSP is still such a beautiful console. I mean it's stupid pretty and I'm surprised it was done so well.
TIL there are IPS mods for the PSP, I got a PSP-1000 right when it came out and it came with a few dead pixels in the middle of the screen. Now I can finally fix it!
"We can now play PSP games on a big screen"
1) PSP2000/3000/GO all do this
2) PSTV also does this. If you hack it with a HDD, you get a lot of PSP games.
Plus this came at the cost of the PSP1000's exclusive feature. Having a modded PSP able to function as a universal remote is pretty neat.
If video-out is a priority feature then surely any other PSP model should have been used as a base. Every other model has twice the RAM, too.
I have both a PSP3000 and a PSTV. The video out on the PSP is nowhere near the quality of an HDMI out (like the one on the PSTV). On the other hand, getting the PSP stuff working on the PSTV is a bit of a pain. Much easier than it used to be, but not worth it if you can have a dedicated PSP to do this.
That's true, but there only an IPS display for the PSP1000 tho..
@@MarcosCodas Absolutely right about the video out, I have a PSP3000 and the output over component is really kinda rough. However the second point I would argue that... I have a PSP, PSTV, and a Vita and it's really easy these days to get PSP games on the PSTV and the Vita. I play my PSP stuff on the Vita because it's basically a "PSPXL" in that way, and personally I wouldn't sacrifice the UMD drive on the PSP for better video out but it's still a really cool mod for those who would!
@@BlyssSarania I'll revisit the PSP thing on the Vita/PSTV. Maybe I just had a bad couple of days that time. It was a couple of years ago so I'm sure it's come a long way.
Those intro shots just have me mesmerized.
Awesome video as always Tito! One mod I did to my PSP-1000 back in the day was I fit a SNES dpad into mine as Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Dark Stalkers was unplayable with the original dpad. It made a massive difference! I just trimmed the plastic in the center and then I had make the SNES dpad match the PSP dpad on the bottom.
That sounds pretty cool! I never heard of swapping in a snes dpad before, very interesting!
Dang. I have been looking all this up this week to fix up my old psp. I was just thinking how it would be awesome if you did a video on this….
And here we are haha.
Love your videos and amazing work!
This is awesome. The IPS looks great. The hdmi mod is neat. For me however, just using the composite out works. I'm not a videophile so composite is fine. As always, great video Tito.
One major future issue though.. allot of newer tv's only have hdmi.. or if you're using a computer monitor, hdmi or display port
The cons outweigh the pros in my opinion or atleast even it out to where you might as well just leave it oem but you rock dude! Keep doing what you do Love to see it!
Few things as someone who's done the ips mod. Make sure you get the gasket and put it on. I got a screen without one and dust wouldn't stop getting under the plastic. Also don't skimp on shorting the right thing - it can move the image up or down cutting things off.
Also, psp can play ps1 eboots because it can play ps1 natively without emulation. Good luck all!
I thought PS1 eboots were emulation?
@@celebraces2yes it’s all emulation . There’s no fpga or ps1 hardware inside of it lol
"there's strong evidence that the PSP's MIPS R4000-based CPU is running most of the PS1's R3000 code natively, but it's highly likely that the rest of the PS1 hardware is being emulated entirely by software" @@Drivenby
@@vava85 Either way its an emulator called POPS (Playstation-On-Playstation)
Prototyped on PS2 Network JP where it was version POPS-001
Magnet mats are so helpful for these type of uncommon repairs. You lay them out exactly as I do, like they are laid out in the device with labels. Hdmi is nice, more future proof, but for me not worth it over the component cables I already have. The IPS screen is super tempting, since mine has water spots and a few dead pixels at this point. Another solid job.
Awesome vid, Tito. I'm surprised you didn't go for the Vita analog & USB-C mod. That would definitely be one unstoppable PSP
Man, that sounds awesome! I actually haven’t seen that mod, will definitely have to look that one up
@@MachoNachoProductions oh man definitely consider em. Would be an epic "part two" video. And both are immensely trivial for a man of your caliber. 👍
I watch your videos for two reasons. One, really interesting, well thought out, cool retro mods, and great guides. Two, the oh so satisfying jazz music + 4k retro internals/dirt removal porn. I say this because I think number two would really benefit from some new high quality jazz tunes. This one is tried and true, but I would love some variety... Anyway, I didn't want a PSP until this video, now I want one. Thanks for the great video as always.
Hi Tito, I am happy to see your new video notification on my screen. Love your videos since I first saw you years ago. Excellent production as always. Glad to see you are still passionate about this topic and keep delivering fantastic content. Game boys PSP are my childhood.
Best wishes, Kevin.
Kinda disappointing, PSP already has analog video output, you're doing quite some work, spending 40 bucks, removing the UMD drive, and IR Blast(+ without covering the connector sides) just for HDMI output.
But that depends on which PSP model you have
As I emphasize, the mod is only for the 1000 or Fat model, which those don't have video output, so if you have a PSP Fat that doesn't read discs, it's an excellent option
Good to see that mods are emerging for the PSP. I wouldn't do this to mine, but this can be great for a unit that already has a broken screen and umd drive.
this video was really professional such a joy to the eyes and mind
Thank you!
Great work! I love your videos!
Thank you! So glad you like them!
I have been waiting for this one!
Thank you for your video 🤩 I've just found my PSP model 1000 ❤
Excellent video as always, I couldn't help think PPSSPP android psp emulator has been so well made that it runs very well on most phones and can even enhance the original psp rendering, so is this set up worth it?
Awesome video. You’re a genius. Did you make a video, or is there an board the has USB-C video out, to work with monitor glasses like XREAL air2?
More than happy with the IPS panel I installed in one of mine.
Very good video, pal. A Colombian youtuber called 'Mundo Yakara' made 2 great mods for the PSP, one of them was installing a smartphone battery to the console, so we can upgrade our play time even to 8 hours straight. And the second one was removing the original charger port and installing a USB-C port to make charging easier. He did a very good job, so i really recommend you to take a look to his videos
I have been waiting for a video like this for a while. I still have my original 1000 and want to perform some upgrades.
Really lovely use of a Ceramic White PSP, I always wanted to import one from Japan as a teenager.
It's pretty sweet, I still have my model 1 and model 2 kicking around. The PSP was such a good time for gaming.
Great video, only recommendation would be to list the tools/items you used before you do the work, I think it would really help the people following this video
The PSP-1000 was always lacking in good TV-out features compared to the later revisions. Groovy to see there's finally something available, even if it's a third-party solution!
Nice video, thanks. I hope we have good usb-c mods for the psp and vita. I've seen some, but they're not very friendly. The one on the PSP has it for charging, but I'm talking about replacing the mini USB at the top.
I'd love to see an updated screen replacement video for 1000 and 2000/3000 series PSPs. So many options out there with lots of junk to sift through.
Would love an IPS kit for my 2000 as well
Can't wait for the wireless controller mod. Iv seen it done but I can't find the video, it was a psp consolizer mod and he explained how it worked and all . Pretty cool. (I found em, its stephen cooper)
This was a good video good job
I would so love to see an IPS screen mod for all the revisions of PSP. I think the 1000 looks the best overall though and it is certainly the one that needed the upgrade the most.
The HDMI out mod I just don't see a need for. The component output on my 3000 works great and doesn't have the same problem with audio as the mod. Not to mention leaving the UMD drive fully in tact. Being able to connect a controller would be awesome though, however I'm certain you'd need custom firmware for that.
Do PS Vita next! Is very dope 👍
For me at least, with the effort involved doing the HDMI mod vs. the result, I'm more than happy sticking with the component output cables into an HDMI scaler like a retroTINK. That being said, it's always nice to see old hardware getting attention and treatment to make it more compatible with modern equipment.
When you called this a Switch I had MUCH higher expectations, this seems like a mod that needs a lot more time to cook to be worth buying or doing.
it's actually better than switch since the psp is actually portable and not a giant glorified tablet
@@harperbolic My dude the Switch is a bit of a joke of a product hardware-wise, but the one thing it has always done right is portability. They specifically undervolted the already outdated CPU when it launched for it to have better battery life and it weighs next to nothing.
@@LPcrazy_88 yea the weight is really good, but that's not portable, that's handheld
@@harperbolic tf you on about man, what could possibly make the Switch more portable? I often have to put my Switch in my back pocket (when it's in a case mind you) when taking stuff out of my car. How on earth could it get any more portable? You wanting tech to go back to Gameboy Pocket sizes again?
There are so many things the Switch doesn't do well and you're out here trying to say it isn't portable because it is bigger than a OG PSP? You've lost the plot man.
@@LPcrazy_88 is not that the switch is bad or non portable, it is. I just miss the old really cute and smol portable console lmao
like the DSi, psp and etc
it's more of a nostalgia thing
Now do it with the vita
Good mods, but I think HDMI mod is mostly useful for capturing video or streaming than actually playing on the big screen. Also, would be cool to see a simple Type-C mod in the "ultimate" PSP. Relatively easy mod to do on most handhelds that adds convenience by removing a proprietary charging cable (can be done with a simple breakout board in most cases). Carrying a powerbank with a single short Type-C cable to charge your phone and the console is a huge W. Did that to my consoles.
Quick suggestion macho, I see you possibly put in infinity 2.0 cfw, I suggest going to ark 4 a direct upgrade from infinity 2.0 so you won't need to Uninstall the 2.0 firmware but also they fix compatability issues with some games, made region free for all movies as well as set a native overclock which really isn't a overclock since a lot of games underclock its basically running its intended performance and they made file access way easier! I've noticed major performance increase from this firmware over the last one they made (infinity 2.0)
Tito you're a pillar of the console modding community. This video balances creating hype for the PSP modding scene while also encouraging more activity in what is currently kind of a niche console for mods. Love your high quality content and enthusiasm for elevating the hobby
I adore the PSP. Thank you for this video.
That final fantasy music for the intro tho!!!
Do this for 720p out?hummmmmm.
By the way nice video!
The video I’ve been waiting for
Tito, why do your video titles keep changing? It's making me feel like I'm in the twilight zone hahah. Excited to watch this one - the PSP is an underappreciated favorite of mine x
I love watching you mod all of these consoles, just hate that majority have very tiny soldering required (which I am not skilled enough for.
I never owned a PSP, but all the love that it's getting recently mod wise, is making me so excited to get one when I find one for cheap (hopefully with a broken screen so I can replace it)
Hi Tito,
I like your into song. Gives me good vibes of decades ago. It sounds like a variation of "Lasgo - Something". If true, which version?
I remember being able to play Birth by Sleep from my PSP 3000 using an adapter to connect to the TV. It wasn’t hdmi but it at least gave 720p quality without having audio come out of both my psp and the tv if I remember
The PSP300x have a great screen on IPS level and a component out. With a good scaler you get much better image without lag.
Can we also get 'Building an ultimate PS Vita' video, pretty please? I've hardmodded my PS VITA 2000 with a second battery, trimming some of the inside plastic and by rotating the speaker so the battery would fit. Now it runs twice as long, but would like to see if there's any other options to hardmod the console.
I just bought a glacier white psp yard sale for $5 it looks so good but needs a screen so i think this will be a great mod
wish you do with the ps vita great work !
Maybe plugging in some broken headphones or a headphone extension cord would be a temporary fix for the audio coming out of the speakers. Might also be possible to install a small switch between the speaker output and the HDMI output.
that is so much work...
Two mods I would love to see more commonplace and "standardized" among PSP 1000 modding are USB-C charging/data (replacing either the Mini USB or the charge connector and having a 3D printed blank for the whichever doesn't get replaced by the USB-C) and LiPo battery conversions; whether it be a high capacity that replaces the UMD drive or just a more reliable cell to put inside the OEM battery shell.
I think as far as a more standard USB-C, the best option would be to have a female receptacle in place of the Mini USB receptacle, wired for charging and data, then a blank in place of the OEM charging jack.
Now I need to talk to my friends that have 3d printers.....
USBC with fast charge AND video out. That's the dream for me.
That and Bluetooth audio so this thing can take over my car stereo again
@@hatdag5976 fast charge and OTG video out would be awesome. At that point though I expect it would need a PCB that would take up possibly the entirety of the UMD drive space. For a lot (myself included) that wouldn't be an issue, but there's still a big chunk who still like to use the physical media.
A man can dream though....
@@NordicDan the 3000 and 2000 do video out so I don't think it's a stretch!
Video out on the PSP is always so lacking though
You make it look so easy.
I wish the 2000 and 3000 models were also getting mods. They could also benefit from better screens and HDMI out.
Exactly, and a mod to use external cotnroler, via software, per exemple.
PSP 2000 needs an IPS kit
I think the fact that the OLED Vita exists makes this less likely to happen, sadly.
@@human4491 With the OLED Vita and seeing how it can play all PSP games fine, I would have wanted to see an ultimate Vita.
@@TheCoolDaveThere’s homebrew for video output over USB using an RPi dock. Other than that the Vita doesn’t have much room for improvement.
Very cool!
Having big hands. I've always preferred the 1000. The 2000 was just too small for me. Handhelds like the DMG GB, Game Gear, Nomad and Steam Deck. Feel so comfortable in my handles. Nice n chunky. Heck, I bought the circle pad for my 3ds back in the day. Just to have a little more to hold on to.
This is what I’ve always wanted to see. An HDMI mod for the PSP! Now I only hope somebody does a Type-C mod for the system.
The PSPGo is a better option if you want to play connected to display by using the dock adapter plus it has Bluetooth which helps connect an external controller and you can still play the games from the SD Adapter.
I seriously Love the idea, I think not only should they improve HDMI PSP mod but as well they should develop a PS Vita HDMI modd too!
this is great for streaming original PSP games to twitch and yt, without using an emulator... I need this for 3DS!
Excellent Idea. Even up to 512 to 1TB storage makes room for many possible PSP Games.
For playing on the TV, the PSP Go seems to be the much better choice. It has video out from the factory and even a dock from Sony to use it with, and you can use PS3 controllers wirelessly. Also, the 1000's advantage, the UMD drive, disappears with the HDMI mod.
My ultimate PSP is a consolized version that still lets me play with my UMDs, but with video out and a PS2 controller port.
I have the PSP component cables for my HDTV. Add Bluetooth to the PSP so you can use a Bluetooth controller while you play on the TV.
Ultimate PSP is PSP Go with dock + DS3 + scaler. Altenatively Dock can be replace with PSP Go Data/Charging/Componente cable. Such cable occasionaly appears online or can be made by combing charging/data cable with component cable. Bigginner soldering required
Nah the ultimate PSP is a modded Vita. You can dock any Vita with hacks and it can run Vita games on top of all the PSP ones lol
Initial d Street Stage with the English mod is amazing.
macho and total kommando uploads today psp keeps winning
Well, this mod is kind a no go for me.
Input lag, no UMD, the stuff with the sound that weird, this 3 point don't make me want to buy it !
You talk about it in the end, it is a start, and we need to wait for better mod for the PSP. A dream about a true Consolizer like what we have with the GBA, with 720p/1080p, wireless control support and the UMD reader 👍👍👍.
Great video btw 👍.
The IPS screen piqued my interest, not so much the HDMI mod though. I wouldn't want to give up the ability to use UMDs, and I have a 2000 that outputs via component as well as a cfw PS3 that can play PSP games. Plus I have an older tv I use for my "retro" gen 7 consoles that doesn't have a remote, so IRblaster is something I'd like to utilize with my 1000 and I'd be giving that up too.
That iFixit board is definitely something I need to invest in. I've got a bunch of good stuff off of them in the past.
Mods that use a controller would most likely have lot more soldering for each of the buttons so ya do you want to go through that vs just buying a really long HDMI cable?
God I love this videos. Thank you for bringing this quality content to CZcams, is the best that I know. Also I love the PSP mods, but it would be great to also see more handheld mods including PSP, like 3DS and PsVita or even build a mini handheld pc or make a portable Dream Cast.
Also I wanted to build my Fighting Stick and I thought maybe you could have video about it.
There's plenty of extra room in the UMD area for a Pi Pico to use for controller support, so let's get on that. :)
I'd guess this is intended as kinda a capture/stream mod rather than intended as a means of playing it personally on a TV, but yeah things seem a little janky with it, but maybe a digital audio capture isn't possible. Although the volume control might just be in software already with no way to decouple them, so yeah maybe just a means to mute the internal speakers would be a good addition.
i modded my psp today lol... great timing!
"Honey wake up! Macho Nacho made a new video!"
I need to take my meds, but even if I am watching alone, I still enjoy your videos every time. Especially when you show the process of modding/installing things. It's like therapy but it's free and that's a great price.
great video! btw that is a MICRO hdmi, not a mini one... cheers
The 3 Modes explained:
Mode 1 - Windowed (calibrated for bigger screens, almost 1-by-1 Output)
Mode 2 - Fullscreen (with a Black Border for TVs with Overscan that can't be disabled)
Mode 3 - Fullscreen (without Overscan-Borders, fill Screen)
That's what i can tell about the screen output seen in the Video
I have no problem to using the PSP as a console/controller hybrid, I find it quite cool actually, but, there should be an option to turn off the PSP own screen and sound when HDMI is plugged in
A dedicated consoliser mod for PSPs would be great. There's a great number of them lying unused because the screen was fairly easy to break... I know for me at least that was the reason I stopped playing on mine.
I would love this, IF it was for the PSP-3000, as that had Bluetooth support for PS3 controllers, had analogue video out, and double the RAM.
Many thanks, you always manage to come up with original mods.
Having to irrevocably modify certain parts of these consoles always makes me a little sick to my stomach.
Are there any good audio mods for the PSP? I absolutely love my PSP it sounds really good via headphones or external speakers but that built in speaker has no real punch.
The Audio is just picked from the analog part of the PCB in the PSP. No wonder it is enabled for HDMI and PSP at the same time :-). The the extra analogue conversion is of course unwanted and not needed, if you find a usable digital format on the pcb.
Awesome mods, also im trying to get android on my nintendo dsi/lite do you think there is a way to make that happen?
Seems like it's a stone's throw away from a console-ized PSP! That's what I want - custom case, keep your UMD drive, HDMI out, wireless control... that'd be glorious.
I emailed you about this kit a few months back when it was only available from an aliexpress seller. Awesome to see it becoming more widespread, great vid as always Tito!
the psp 1000 is literally the first handled that i ever modded, that model in particular i remember that was also a little more powerfull of the other two and have a bettere fit on hands
I’d have thought fixing the feeling of the square button on the 1000 was fairly high up the list.
So is there going to be a video on the shortstack wii sometime?
I remember searching for mods to do on my psp a decade ago and the most common ones are the battery mod and the usb-c mod. I guess since you said that the screen and the hdmi mods are the only ones available the battery and usb-c mod mustve been patched by sony at some point.
12:12 this will definitely set the difficulty of this mod. Not all mother boards are the same and there are some board revisions that are very difficult to bridge this connection.
It is cool to see the psp still getting some love from it's mod community but it makes no sense to me to install the hd mod and remove the UMD drive when a simple OEM component cable output 480p iirc and ossc can upscale that up to 1080p but maybe I am missing something
Shoot, I would do a similar Mod if they had one that replaced the old USB with USB-C that supported charging, video out etc. But maybe this is a good step toward that!
