  • Hi and welcome to another First Class Goalkeeping training drills video.
The Stab Technique is an essential skill to have in a goalkeepers arsenal. The method of quickly releasing the ball and being able to find your target while at a high tempo is hugely beneficial in a game situation.
Broken down into 6 key points.
    1. The Scan - the ability to identify your pass and assess the distance and correct power you are putting into the kick.
    2. The Set Up - the use of the back spin allows the ball to remain in a close distance while also making the ball come to a stop a lot sooner.
    3. Less Steps - because the ball is closer to you, the generating of power from a longer run up isn't available and in turn makes the action faster to play.
    4. Increase Accuracy - because of the shorter run up the scales need to be readjusted. Meaning decrease in power = increase in accuracy.
    5. Eyes on the Ball - although it's a fast pace, don't rush just stay calm and focus on the ball.
    6. Connecting - strike the ball with little to no follow through, head over the ball and resist the want to lean back.
Keeping the flight of the ball as flat and low as possible to get to the target as quickly and in a controllable manner as possible.
    Game scenario could be:
    1. Taken a cross at the back post away from players. A quick release allows an early pass to your winger down the line.
    2. Attacking team play a through ball which you collect at the edge of your box. Everyone pushes out and you quickly counter to your winger or strikers feet who can hold off the defender marking them.
Striking the low flat balls allows your players to retain possession rather than going for distance with a higher kick which gives the defending team an opportunity to win the header and head the ball back toward your goal.
It's a great drill to try and set up your targets with team mates and walk through game play situations as knowing your distance and range is essential.
