Poom is like that last little bit of cookie dough that won't ball up and instead crumbles into a sad pile
That’s not a sad pile. That’s the handful of cookie dough you look around the room to make sure no one else is there and stuff it into your mouth while your dozens of cats watch you judgingly.
So accurate lmao
But you still cook the sad pile because cookies can be round or any other shape and it tastes the same. In jazzas case though, it crumbles into a sad pile and he still makes art.

I think for most wood clays you roll it into a ball for a while and then make a very basic general design (no armature or anything like that), let it dry completely, and then carve it using tools. I don't think it's meant to be worked like most other clays.
But when he was sculpting it, the tool was just pushing the clay out of the way instead of carving it. Does he have to wait for longer?

@@Zeldur Yeah it has to be 100% dry before you can do anything to it. The length of time depends on the wood clay. Online it says it can take up to three days for the clay to be 100% dry and useable for carving what you want from it. Though most common is 24 hours (or using a dehydrator to speed things up).

It’s supposed to serve as an internal structure for metal clays that burns up when the clay is fired. It’s not supposed to be it’s own medium.
A quick google search revealed that wood clay is often used for mold making (not only in molds, but AS molds as well) for jewelry making and stuff. For example, you could first press wood clay into a d20 die mold, then pull it out and use silver clay or something to make a metal die (with some cool cutaways and spaces), then burn out the wood clay and you’re left with a cool hollow d20! People use it for making jewelry with hollow areas as well. I vote you make some cool hollow DnD dice, yeah? That can be your redemption.

Not trying to be rude, but it's somewhat hard to follow what you're describing. In one place you say the wood clay is the mold not used in a mold, then you say to press the wood clay into a mold, then somehow it apparently ends up inside some silver clay at the end. Could you post a rewrite? I think I get the gist but there's too many places that I'm making assumptions on how to interpret what you wrote lol
@@xxportalxx. squish wood clay into a d20 mold -> pop out of mold -> wrap woody d20 in silver clay -> burn out the woody d20 -> you now have a hollowed out silver d20
@@matildas3177 yeah that's what I assumed he meant as well, it's basically just a burn-off material like using newspaper in a pot during firing. But when he started talking about using it as a mold it gave me the impression it could be used like green sand or the reverse like pla in casting.

This is basically just what you do to fill holes in wood. Mix sawdust and glue together to make a solid which, when dry, can be sanded and manipulated with tools like wood.
I noticed you used PVA glue, I wonder if you would have had a better result with actual wood glue. I know you switched to liquid nails but there’s additives in wood glue that work really well to bind sawdust but having never played with it as a clay I don’t know if it wouldn’t just crumble too. I definitely don’t think you could use sculpting tools with it once dry though, it gets though.

@@marthanewsome6375 I’m not sure if it’s a “slang” difference because I’m not Australian but where I am white pva glue like he was using and wood glue and two different products. While pva can be used for wood, I’m not sure if he’s using what I would consider a “strong” wood glue or not, wood glue has additional additives too it vs just white pva. The texture he was getting and the way it dried makes me think he wasn’t using the type of product I’m referring to, usually it dries almost like a hard resin type product and is sharp when snapped off. Brands would probably be different where I am vs Australia especially since I often buy the store brand so I’m not sure how else to make the distinction. I’m talking about the kind of wood glue that’s used on construction sites, not the kind of wood glue you use for crafting with wood at home. (Google does make a distinction as well between pva and wood glue, they’re two different products even though both may be used to glue wood)
I read somewhere that it’s good for making hollow things because when you fire it the wood will simply burn away with the jewelry or whatever you formed around it staying. It’s more of a tool than an art medium itself

very... very common.
it all likelihood, wood clay is probably moreso for the diy craftsy type that wants to make a whittle carving but without the chunk of wood as a base.
either that, or as someone else pointed out... as wood filler for carpentry projects. (which... it **is** wood filler, considering they're both just sawdust and glue.)
In the woodworking community we like to call this "wood filler" XD

Right, when I was in school we had little tins of the stuff in different colors. Called gupa. And a saying. The boys do their best and gupa does the rest.
It's meant to fill little cracks or a dent you might have made with a wooden hammer. You put on this stuff, let it dry and sand it back. If you pick the right color it can be pretty flawless
It’s now known as poom.

It would be neat to see an update on that (if you’ve worked on it again, of course… maybe not so interesting if its an abandoned project lol). Wood clay is actually used for jewelry making! It's essentially a burnable armature for silver or copper clay to be wrapped around, then once you're done shaping the metal clay toy can burn away the wood clay.
I'm pretty sure that stuff is just meant to fix wooden furniture and stuff. Like say you have a wooden table with a giant crack or chip in it, or a wooden floor with a piece chipped out, you just use it to fill the gap.

@@vidhoard yeah I saw, but I mean you can make art out of anything, that doesn't make it a good medium. If you want to sculpt with it my advice would be to do it in layers and let it dry in-between. It would take forever but I think it's the only way. Even when I'm filling in furniture I tend to do a first layer and let it dry and then do another because it tends to shrink as it dries
I gave a search through Japanese craft blogs (since the brand is Japanese) to see what people were using this particular brand for. It looks like most people use it in molds to make fake sweets--specifically short breads and crusts. A few makers were using it to mimic sand in miniatures of beaches or riverbanks. One person was using it to make Matroshka doll centers, but that's a very basic shape. The owl person's blog didn't have any "in progress" shots of their sculpting process. Most of the makers and videos I found were working only with the clay--no armatures--and rolling balls which they very gently manipulated through squeezing and rolling. I don't think it's really a clay that's meant for fine manipulation--more for texture than anything.
So I thought that “clay” idea was only really used to fill blemishes on wood floors and stuff like that. I know I have used the glue and sawdust method to fill cracks and imperfections
when you rolled it out in the dabble it looked like ginger bread/ cookie dough, so maybe instead of making sculpture's maybe roll it out like a dough and use cookie cutters poke a hole at the top let them dry and you can paint them and you could turn them into Christmas tree decorations
The mask idea was really nice. I am hoping Jazza can do that with a different medium in a future video.

This is how I feel when I try sculpting with Green Stuff. But according to Google, it turns out that wood clay in sculpting is actually used for making hollow forms. So a vase for example needs to have a hollow center to be a vessel. If you rolled a block of wood clay into a football shape or round form, you would then sculpt over it with a standard clay of your choice. The wood clay is then burned away as it bakes in the kiln, and allows the final clay piece to be empty.
That final result nearly tempted me into trying wood clay, but I'm just not as motivated as Jazza, so I think I'll stick to my Super lazy Sculpey.
I can make the final result, just without the clay. Lol

I've been watching your videos for about 4 years now and have not missed a single one (not to mention all of the older stuff I went back to watch) and I love seeing the stuff you create. Admittedly, I started watching because I was interested in your character design challenges (which actually inspired me to start my own art journey), but as you've moved on to other mediums, I have been following you. Just a few minutes ago, actually, I just discovered something new that I thought you may find interesting and I wanted to share it with you. I would love to see you try your hand on wire sculpture. It is really beautiful artwork and I think you'd be able to create something really epic with it!
As interesting as these "weird mediums" are, I miss the days of just regular ol' art in a medium that works well and that you know you can get good results in! I'd like to see these weirder videos interspersed with regular ones where we know we'll get a pretty result to look at!

You should try sculpting with Wood Filler, it's got similar properties to clay and when it dries it makes a really strong, smooth structure that resembles bone. I've used it to make a skull mask before, using paper mache as a base and covering in wood filler.
As always, it's so much fun to watch you dabble and experiment with so many different kinds of mediums! That being said, you did compare the texture of your homemade wood clay recipe to cheese...should we be on the lookout for a sculpting with cheese video int he near future? Taking into account the fact that you did attempt to sculpt with gelatin?

Jazz, I've been watching your stuff since the paladin series, bet it's been awhile since you thought of that huh, and I have to say you have never failed to entertain me. It is great, absolutely fantastic really, that you are still able to do the things you love to make a living. You are not a starving artist, and I love all that you do. You are the reason me and my friends play cogent instead of dnd. Please don't ever change, even if you ever retire, don't change who you are we love you and your work.
Long post of my recipe, works great with practice
AIR Dry Cold Porcelain Clay
Supplies
Wood glue 105 grams
Rice flour 105 grams
Any Body Soap 6 grams
Any Lotion
Normal School Glue
Steps
First weigh 105 grams of rice flour in a zip lock bag.(1 cup)
Then add in 105 grams of the wood glue. (1 cup)
Then add in 6 grams of the body soap. (This is an approximate amount to how it feels as you mix and knead.)
Mix well in a bag.
Once mixed well, take out of the bag.
Put a small amount of lotion on your hands and knead the “dough”.
Once it is soft and makes a teardrop-ish shape it is ready.
While you are building with it you will occasionally need to add lotion to your hands as you work to keep the clay soft.
Any clay you aren’t using, keep sealed up from the air.
When you want to join pieces you use a little bit of the normal school glue. Understand that you may not be able to get seamless joining in some pieces. Lotion can also be used in small portions to smooth a little.
This is also sandable after a day or two drying and can be painted.

I be looking at this wood clay and when you started making your own, it is basically exactly what I used in my woodworking class at school to fill in the gaps on my table.
I loved that he used something with wood to make something that is a wooden mask, it’s amazing.
Not sure what poom is but that is definitely what poom would look like 😂
I made a batch myself about a year ago cause I was working for a contractor and had a metric ton of the stuff building up.
To counter the tackiness of the wood glue- wood glue, not PVA, not Liquid nails- I added Linseed oil, then ya just gotta work the crap out of it.
I think that recipe also called for Spackle. Lead to a firm, but workable clay I think can best be compared to foam clay.

It seems like wood clay would work better for carving than sculpting. Try making a slurry out of it and fill a large mold.
Just a thought Jazza- for the mask, what if you put a screen mesh over it to help keep the woodclay from breaking? I don't do any type of crafts (no room) so I don't know if that will work but its worth a shot, maybe? This was still a good try at the medium. I never even heard of it until now. Thank you for your hard work and keep it up!

Maybe try mixing different sawdust sizes together? like some finer particulates and some larger ones? maybe the size difference would help with gripping.

im a little late but maybe use some sort of like UV resin then mix in small amounts until you have the consistency you like and make the skulpture, then try and cure it with a UV light? idk if itd work too well though since it would be a lot more difficult to carve after curing
I've worked with selfmade wood clay (sawdust+glue) in school before and it actually worked pretty well, it was just not possible to be very detailed. I made a cat head with it. I initially sculpted the head, but it was pretty rough, so after it dried I smoothed it out with sand paper. Overall I was really happy with the result
When I was in wood shop wood clay was never meant to sculpting, it was ment to fill in gaps when working on wood projects. So yeah, this project was kinda doomed from the start. 😂
I actually liked to work with wood clay, but the one that we have in my country is totally diferent and have a strong smell i think bc of the type of bond/glue in the dough that actually helps a lot with the wood, ive done pretty good stuff with her but it takes a lot of time to dry (not for me im anxious, i poured it in the oven, wasn't supposed to but u know..)

When I make wood filler for projects, I mix Elmer's glue and saw dust. Makes a great filler.

I think wood clay would be a good material to make a foundation or sculpting a ground surface for a diorama
I haven't used that specific brand. But my grandmother had a similar type of clay, it was torture to work with.
Try putting it into a press mould (you could 3d print it and if you need one I could try to design one for you). I think that's the only way it's going to work for anything, considering the properties.

with this clay i make little gingerbread houses / people with it, I dry it to the pieces I need then glue ten together and decorte the little houses and give them away as gifts :)
we also got those plate around here pretty expensive btw

TBH it looks more like a hole filler. Might be good for ground/rocks in a miniature model.

Could try mixing with wood puddy that's used for filling in gaps in wood working
I tried to use some of this kind of wood filler for a picture frame and it was just terrible. Since then I’ve seen people just use spackle (what you use on walls) to fill holes instead and I’d do that next time.
I’ve always thought Jazza should try whittling, if he’s ok with a couple nicks to the hand of course
Try using something like Tacky Glue (brand name) or a strong glue specifically for wood. Maybe even C.A. glue of some sort.
I appreciate the kinesthetic learning and trying lots of things. But a little bit of research or reading instructions might go a long way 😅
I make paper clay and it behaves similar to this wood clay. I let it dry and instead of water, I used wood glue to smooth it out. Also, it's the kind of thing you have to let dry a bit before continuing working with it.
