Disclosure Yes the Rabid Hedgehog needs to lay off the tacos, I get it.... I really really do.... So when trail riding I won't get winded as bad.... But this was the second time through that 12 miles trail as I HAD LOST a camera on that trail as well (hence the 2nd time comment), but they were not running at that time as I was getting a feel for the tires and the power and how to ride the XT through those trail conditions... So I had kind of worn myself out. I also did not have the helmet mounted cam until the 2nd time as well so that I knew the tree and limb pattern as to not smack it off. Anyways Enjoy! - Zábava
Great review! I've had my '15 XT for a year now. My first one and I love it also. I've added a skid plate, Barkbusters, better grips, bigger footpegs, and some Happy Trails racks & aluminum panniers. I camp off of it and commute 60 miles to work on back roads. Awesome bike for sure.
That is awesome. I still need the skid plate because I am in constant fear is smashing it into something. I do use mine for work as well and the thing never disappoints. Also gets amazing fuel mileage as well!

just bought my 17 on Wednesday...great bike...no complaints. I use it for work, great ride performance. no need for a huge engine...does everything I was looking for.
I use mine very frequently as well. I love getting 65+ in the city for fuel and it's small nimble chassis. And if I'm on my way home and see a trail I can just dive off and play.
Hey, thanks for the review. I'm an old dual sport rider, 62. I have had many, KLR650, DRZ400s to name a few. My last one, 2 years ago was a XR650L. Then I went cruiser. I'm sick of cruisers, want another dual sport. A few years ago, I had an XR250L, and I had the most fun on it. I like to do the kind of riding you do, so I think the XT250 will be the perfect bike. The older XT225 had quite a good reputation, and it looks like the XT250 is even better. PS: I hand a TT500 back in the day.
The XT250 is a very easy to live with motorcycle and super simple to maintain and work on in the field as well. It is an excellent choice! It even does well after eating a tree :)
Just got my XT250 there days ago. After 40 years of riding, I couldn't agree with you more. The XT is a great bike. I love mine. Such a great choice for me. Glad I got it.
Ride it safe! And avoid launching yourself into a tree..... Doesn't hurt the XT... Might make the rider sore the next morning....
Love my 2015 XT250F. 2,300 trouble free flawlessly running miles. DR650 w/street tires for my alter ego.

I am on my 2nd XT 250 now, also wore out a XT 225 to the point of the engine burning oil. I love the XT bikes. I am accessorizing my current on with GPS mounts, cup holder, cellphone mounts and such. Just received a tank bag to carry some water and my first-aid kit. Sure wish I could find someone to ride with me.
Great review of XT. Really enjoyed Draper trails video excursion. I started riding Draper in 1974 before any management or supervision out there. It was the wild west with everyone going as fast as they could, in both directions. Riding buddy meet another rider head on. They both lost left handle bar, shifter, and left knee cap. Recently took my new TTR230 there. Wow what a improvement. If I see XT250 there, I'll say hello.

A good rider can ride good. Forget the “big boys”. You will never see them in the woods. I bought a 2001 XT 350. A few years ago. I never see “The Experts” on the trails. Enjoy your bike forget the fools and their fool talk. Love the video.

Thanks for posting this great review. I've been eyeing an XT250 for the back trails and country roads. As some others have commented... thinking I might try to find a pre-2013 carb model (since the prices have really gone down).
No matter which era you find it's still going to be a reliable and rugged bike to take you darn near anywhere.
I've had a lifetime of carbs and their troubles. I'm thankful for today's fuel injected advantages.
Awesome video! I just started riding about a month ago and I'm on a 2006 ninja 250. Been looking at dual-sports and supermotos because I really like the idea of being able to go almost anywhere.
I was trying to decide between this and a WR250r and I think for a smaller guy like myself, this would be a great first dual sport. I also don't really need to go too fast, since I don't plan on doing a whole lot of distance riding anyway.

I have a 2017 XT250. I''m 5'9"" tall , still fit at 62 years old, but a little less flexible than I used to be. (I owned a 1967 Big Bear 250 and 1978 DT250 Yamaha enduro back the '70's and wanted another one, but with better clearance and more modern technology like fuel injection. and a 12V electrical system - the old ones were 6V.)
I've ridden a WR250 with lowering links (still too tall) and with foam cut out of the seat (barely tolerable). The WR is a more powerful bike with lots of torque, but the XT is much easier to ride, extremely reliable and rates high on the fun factor. You can also add a luggage rack to carry water and supplies.
I put an eBay LED headlight bulb on mine and now it lights up the road to the point where cars will occasionally flash me, thinking that my high beam is on. (The bike's electrical system doesn't put out enough power to make the LED bulb high beam any brighter on high beam than on low beam.)

I have a 2012 Triumph Bonnie, a 1965 Triumph TR 6, a 2009 Triumph Street Triple, and an 08 Harley Street Glide also. I find myself hopping on the XT more times then not though. There seems to be a side road the I want to explore a lot of the time.
Right on! That is what I love about my XT as well. Can be riding down the road and see a path to the side and just dive in.

I currently ride a 2005 Kawasaki Super Sherpa 250. 4 years and 10,400 km Some of the off-the-cuff differences of the XT and the Super Sherpa are. Mikuni carbureted. 6 speed transmission. 270 lb wet. Double overhead cam, Four valves per cylinder, Shim under bucket valve train design. Other than that very much same-same
My last Street-Trail bike was a Suzuki DR 200. My last Street-HWY bike of 61,000 km was 2006 Yamaha R1. Current Street-HWY bike is a 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa 1300R
The Suzuki appears to be quite similar to the XT except that the Yamaha XT 250 is fuel injected as well as digital display.

Shim under bucket is kind of a turn off for me, but they do not need adjustment until much later than lock and screw. But the Super Sherpa is sadly not here. Big difference though between a Busa and a Sherpa.
I bought my 2015 XT250 for my lady and company. It's my favorite bike now.
I've now put over a grand on mine and counting near daily. Love this bike.
I MISS my XT225, and the 6th gear! Love your bike, just haven't pulled the trigger yet, on a 250. Mine was '06, bought it new, sold it in '10 with 13000. Miles. Rode that bike a lot. I have test driven, the new XT, but I am not sure. Great video, !
Thanks! I really really really.... And probably really cannot put enough of those there to say how much I wanted a sixth gear on this bike. But I will say the fuel injected 250 has a bunch of grunt where it needs it and it'll reliably bounce along nearly anywhere you point it. Just don't catapult yourself into a tree... Did that with this one. Bike was totally fine, I was geared up nicely so I was fine too. But my gosh the pride hit...

Great review man. I like your philosophy of not running the machine at the limits. If I wanted to cruise at 250cc limits, I'd rather get a 450cc and do it on that one. I like the XT250 for its simplicity and driveability as well. They say the CRF is better equipped and spec'd but then again it does have more stuff to break and maintain. One thing I do wish was different with Yamaha's is that the engine tends to "knock" when driven hard, and it's not the knock that comes from detonation with the low octane gas. Honda engines stay "quiet" even when you wring them to their limits.
I have heard that said knock and I understand, sounds like you're not quite in the right gear or something, have not put a finger on it yet. But I do agree, never strangle the machine and let it live where it is more comfortable so it will last you longer. I need to hop on a newer CRF and compare for sure.
Well, I don't lug the engine, if that's what you meant. The "knock" you speak of comes from detonation, w/c is a result of any or a combination of such factors as: low octane fuel, engine lugging (high load at low rpm), excessive spark advance. Let's call that the "traditional knock" and it happens to pretty much to all internal combustion gas engines. The trademark Yamaha "knock" i am talking about is very faint, but can still be heard at idle speed, if you're close enough to the engine, then gets kinda loud with more load (acceleration or uphill climb), regardless of engine rpm. It almost sounds like the piston rings ringing as they shake about in their grooves. This is the kind of noise you never hear in Honda engines.
ChuddleBuggy no that's not what I meant, just the sound that it makes is reminiscent of the lug aound sometimes.
The XT is pretty good over all terrain but if I had to pick one it’s best for I’d say the roads as a non freeway commuter. However that being said this bike has taken me deep into rough areas, abused dropped many times and then it takes me to work the next day.
Watched your video again great little bike still got my one but upgrade to a versys 300 x it's a great little bike

I had a Yamaha DT 175 enduro when I was growing up and a little bit over a year ago I had a Baja warrior 200cc trail bike and I converted it to a belt to chain drive instead of chain to chain it hooks right up now and has a way way smoother take off it looks like a little Harley Davidson my cousin has a ninja 250 and I could keep up with him all day I miss it its perfect for riding in town and on back roads and I could go trail riding with the friends when all the guys get together and go riding I surprised a few of 200/250 enduro riders because my Baja warrior 200 trail bike would keep up

Hey I was looking at a 2009 of this bike, what the differences between your 2013 and the 2009's? most interested in the engine differences.
The biggest difference is the fuel injection system vs the carb unit on the older one. There are mild power differences as well (very mild like maybe 1 or 2 more HP and TQ). Other than that, really nothing. Same bullet proof engine, same lightweight crank shaft for instant power. So it depends on if you want the ease of start and go in any weather, or choke and warm. Which really is not all that bad with this smaller engine.
+Rabid Hedgehog that's great to hear there. what is the maintenance intervals for the to different years, shorter for the 2009 because it's carbureted.
They are actually the same intervals. The only difference is that there will be some carb cleanings and periodic jetting when needed. That's it, but engine wise, same. 600 miles to first and 4000 is the second and 3000 miles per interval after.
Might want to let the clutch out when going downhill and let the engine help you slow you down. You can always pull it in if needed. You have great areas for riding w/o a whole lot of rocks.. We pay hundreds to ride on mini boulders..
I am torn between a WR and an XT. Although I have 50,ooo miles on heavy road bikes I have zero experience off road and am only 5'6" so this XT looks perfect for me.
The XT for sure. The 35/36 inch on the WR is very much a hard thing to deal with when new on dirt, having the low and narrow option like the XT is very helpful.
I have had both at the same time. I sold the WR250R and kept the XT. I had the lowered seat on the WR, but at 5'7", it was still too tall for me whenever I was off-road. I bought a 2013 model 2nd hand, it had done 22,000 km before i got it but its a great bike. Went on the Chinchilla trail ride 80km loop last year and had no trouble keeping up with most other general riders.
I will never underestimate this bike. It is a very good kit. I do need some new plastics now from a few more trail rides though :)
I bought an alloy bash plate, rear rack and fitted brush guard. Best bike for me.
I do need a bash plate still.
I liked your review well done! I forgot to mention I bought a mesh type seat cover, no more sweaty butt although its kinda weird to be flying down the road and you can feel a cooling breeze where I have never felt one before. Btw I live near Brisbane in Australia.

Such a great bike. Bought my 2016 XT 250 last year. Have 1100km on her now. Love your vids man! Great review!! I just had shoulder surgery last week so I won't be riding for a while so plan is to do a bunch of mods to the XT. Tighten suspension, fmf powercore exhaust, foot pegs and better tires...Anything you recommend? Looking into buying a DR 650 for highway use and keep my little XT for around town and trails! Thanks! I recommend trading the bars out to Protaper CR-Hi in the SE series and adding some bark busters to save the levers and cables and such. The others you have mentioned are perfect!

Problem solved. I'm an XT250, owner now! I like it lots. I'm picky though, ha. 2008, with 6700, actual , at the local Yamaha dealer, 1 owner. Ran out of gas, had to switch it to reserve! Mines carbureted. Fuel injection happened later.
About 5 years down the line. Sometimes it does help to have that little switch vs the light. The reserve usually meant you truly had 30 miles. The little light might mean 30, or 60, or you ran out of fuel 5 seconds ago and now it is on just laughing at you.
Nice review it would be my choice if I get one. I'm 68 and most of my family are against it. I would say that you made heavy work of a simple trail but thanks anyway>
That was my second go at that trail... I was worn out and a bit hurt. I kind of hit a tree the first go around and was sore to boot. But it is a great bike and will take you anywhere.
At age 68 (I'm 72), it's time you did what you want. Wives and kids want to control us until we die for some reason. I'm still married after 50 years of doing pretty much what I want, not what they want. I bought a new vstrom for my 71st birthday. I might buy this xt for my 72nd.
get a Husqvarna 701 if you want a REAL toy man, thats the ultimate dual sport

I hear in Japan they come stock with a few features that America doesn’t get but I may be confusing the 250 with the 225 because mine has a window for the oil but I think the 225 doesn’t for some reason. I saw a video where there is actually a spot on the engine that has a little raised circle where the window should be but it’s just metal
Yeah they are a smidge different per market. Sadly I do not see the air cooled bikes out lasting emission standards much longer and these little air cooled duals will be gone soon. But they are plentiful and will be kept for years to come.

I want a Suzuki Dr 350 or a older Honda 250 my uncle has a older Honda 250 enduro nice bike I am going to try to get going it don't need much a carb cleaning new battery spark plugs clean the gas station and I plan to get my 1981 Honda 200s three Wheeler and do some riding

Hey thanks for the grip tip. I got a 2011. It's my first dual sport ever. Well it's my first motorcycle ever my brothers and my dad and I are all going to ride dual sports together down on trails in like Arkansas. But my dads 6"2 and he wants something thin but doesn't make him look like a elephant on a tricycle any suggestions?

No it does very well and it went around OKC and such in the 103 degree heat this summer without fail. It is a cold weather girl though and when it's down in the 60s and into the lower 40s it really loves it and feels peppier. But it won't burn your legs off.
Ive had a XT250 since 2012 but ive been just riding it on dirt, and I love it. I just got my permit to ride and am looking to take the test for the endorsement. I know its a pretty maneuverable bike compared to others. How difficult was the endorsement test for you? Ive been kinda stressing out about it. Any input from people helps. Thanks!

Awesome bike, would you suggest this for someone that's a beginner going into "Dirt Bikes" for the first time? I'm looking mostly to use this to go back and forth between school as I live mostly on a rural highway of a 65mph speed limit most of the time it fluctuates though between 50-55 then 60-65 mph on some stretches of the road. But I'm looking more/less to use it as a trail bike not really for time trials and whatnot. Fairly reasonable price (Seems good for a somewhat short guy because I'm like 5" 4' lol) Because I'm getting my operators license in Sept 7th as I already have a small Crossover SUV (05 Rav4 S) But looking forward within the next year or two to save up for an (03 F-150) So I'll be most likely getting a Job soon by Sept/Oct to start saving up money for it lol. This would be a great place to start that is for sure since it can get you on the main roads and down the dirt trails at the same time. It is also a 4 stroke so no need to mess with pre-mix and all the fun stuff and it can do the speeds needed for sure. This bike is one of the lower dual sports as well and if it is needed there are ways to lower this down a little bit. I hope you do get out in the wind soon with one. If this is your first bike for sure take a MSF course near you to learn the ropes as well and that way when you do go for the buy you can have a test ride on it to make sure it is the right one for you.

The GoPro is the forward facing camera and I use just it's battery. I usually use a mostly wireless system.
Actually I just remembered these were all the AS100V Sony Action Cams at this time. Not very long after I switched to the Hero 4 Silver after getting it as a gift.

Thinking about purchasing this bike for my 13 year old. However he is 6 ft tall and around 150. Will this be too small for him in your opinion? Did you have trouble riding it because of how small the seat length is?
Never had trouble riding it at all and I am much heavier than he so it will do good for him.
Great review! I been debating on one of these for years. The debate has been between the xt250, tw200, drz400, and the honda, but I always like the xt250 the best. Glad to hear a fellow okie's perspective. Thanks for mentioning a place to ride that's not too far from me. How do you feel about the new Suzuki vanvan 200? Would it be ok for a beginner that will mainly ride dirt, and do in town commuting? Also which would you recommend for a 200 mile back road adventure?
Slim Pickens The XT250. The Vanvan is short on power and more set for the road as well with tire composition and all. The XT250 is great on and off road, so if you are on the trip you can go to road, trail, and dirt roads all in one without worry of tearing things up.

Yeah most mounts use that wonderful stuff, it just happens Sony did not. So when it was replaced that is what I used.
I've had mine over 80mph many times. I would also suggest a skid plate.

Will any of you guys who know talk about what performance mods can be done to the XT250 to give it more torque? I rode one of these motorcycles about a year ago (a full day of tough duel sport/enduro type riding). I found it grossly underpowered.
So, it is a 19hp bike and bitch about it being underpowered, one of the more stupid comments on the net.
I noticed your review was over a year ago. Was looking for that bike for my girl. Would you still recommend It? Have you done any motor or ecu, gearing upgrades since and what would you recommend if any?
HuskyMoto I would still recommend this bike daily. Mine was fully stock in the engine I only changed the bars, grips, added guards, and levers. It's fantastic as is

I have seen it done on several so someone is making them.
The wr250 is much better off road , but the xt250 is quite adequate as an average trail bike.
Indeed the WR is better and more potent, but the XT is a solid little ride and being air cooled is much more simple.

The bar is the ProTaper SE CR-High and the grips are ProGrip Art Evo 725s. Acerbis Rally Pro X-Strong Handguards.
Did you keep the bars the stock width or did you cut them narrower?

When off roading, does little fender above the front tire become an issue?

although this bike can commute, highway and off road, is the best doing trails......his other brother xg250 is used to climb and jump from rock to rock , tree branch etc..in Japan.。。。

Montana White It's a good trade off. I had the KLR650 and never felt terrible about changing out to this bike.

You made the comment that the speedometer "was slow". Are you saying that it read faster or slower than actual speed". I was under the impression that the xt250 displayed a speed faster than actual - but I'm not sure now.
Jan Reeves Some show faster and some show slower. Mine is going around 5 slower than indicated.
I have a 2015 xt250, have u found a stiffer rear spring for it? I'm about 185lbs and 6ft so its a tad squishy, I rip on it tho, and the fmf slip on and a tune raise the top speed to about 82

All the posts seem to love the xt250.. how would it compare to the tw200?
TWs are kind of a bogger bike with that fat tire on the rear so it can slog through some tough loose type terrain. It is brutally simple and still old school carb and slower. You have to short shift a TW very quickly to get to road use speeds where as the XT can be drawn out a bit more. XT is also really good for narrow trails as well and is fuel injected so on cold days and mountain trips there is no choke/hard start/ or jetting to complete. If you like spinning a wrench and such go with the TW, not because it is unreliable, just needs adjustments here and there depending on what you are using it. But if you want just start and play, XT.
how tall are you sir? just checking to see if its too high for me. im 5'6"
Leg length would be a bit more important on this one. 32 inches of leg and the seat is around that height as well with suspension give it drops to maybe 30 inches or so. I am 6 feet altogether tall but I have a friend that was all legs at 5'7" and touched down easily when borrowing it as he had 30 inch legs.

Right. It is not as fast as a true dirt bike so it can keep its own pace behind them on the trails. And on the street it is fast enough around town to keep pace with the bigger bikes, but on the open highways it will kind of lag behind (top speed is like 77 ish). So either way it kind of keeps its own pace on and off the road.

I just bought one as a commuter but.. now im thinking trail... And I was hoping to at least, not be a pain in the a** of the bigger bikes and be able to go at the same place than them offroad (but slower I guess)

It does great on the trails. I think that if there was a little bit more aggressive tire set it would improve it's off road traction and help it keep a better pace.

It's the same displacement but instead of liquid cooled it is air cooled. It has 16 to 18 horsepower vs the WRs 24-27 Horses and 12.1 ftlb Torque vs 16 ftlb. It also has a slightly lower ground height at 11.4 vs. 11.6 but it has a much lower seat height at 31.9 vs 35. It's shock setup is also not as big or has the travel as well. It's kind of the slightly smaller more gentle WR really. Still very capable off road, but not quite as strong or fast as the WR

StuartDesign101 I might have a few more tacos in me :) Actually the more I have rode it and as the engine has loosened up I can hold 70ish now. My speedo is off though, GPS shows it around 5-7 off dependent on where it is in speed. So I get an indicated 77 it's actually 70-71. At 45-50 I have to do five over to be sure I'm actually doing the limit. But for the most part I don't care and I just cruise it and speed off road is really not watched anyways.

Oh ya the Mexico City Blog. Tons of footage. Not yet shared. Many use the smaller bikes. One brand in particular is readily available. "Italica" Not sold in the states. I did just get a Kymco Kpipe that is similar with pit bike motor. Saw many older Honda's and Yamaha's. At the end of my trip I saw one Ducati and did not get a shot. Cheers man.

The XT225 was a 6 speed as was the 2nd Gen XT250. 2008+ they went back to 5. I don't know why Yamaha changed it back, just one of those things.

These bikes have approx, 19 hp. So you get what you get. People who review these bikes should quit with the speed comments and get a more powerful bike.
I'm wondering why you are so slow and breath so hard on the off road section. I want to switch from my 15 KW ebike which is 2/3 of the weight of yours but that off road section would of been a walk in the park for me without using any of the power available. I wish my bike would of been street legal as I love it but law's here are stupid. I have a video posted on my account with a SLOW ride as the forest was very wet and slippery for me after the rain and the chasing ATV has 2 people that were in no rush and it's still way faster than what I see in your video and this was a no effort ride at all, my breath was normal and I never work, not even walk.

Hey thanks for the grip tip. I got a 2011. It's my first dual sport ever. Well it's my first motorcycle ever my brothers and my dad and I are all going to ride dual sports together down on trails in like Arkansas. But my dads 6"2 and he wants something thin but doesn't make him look like a elephant on a tricycle any suggestions?
DR400 would do the trick. Or sticking with the Yamaha group the WR250 is taller and a smidge wider than the XT250 as well. It has about a 35 inch seat height.
