Erice is a wonderfully preserved Mediaeval town offering the most breathtaking views and a palpable sense of history.
Erice is situated about 2,500 feet above sea level. It immediately impresses with its defensive walls and castle, affording breathtaking views over the Trapani Gulf, the saltworks, the Egadi Islands, Cofano Mountain and on clear days, all the way to the African coast.
Insider tip: If you have a sweet tooth, head for Maria Grammatico's famous pastry shop in Via Vittorio Emanuele, 14. Opened in 1950, this shop has become legendary also thanks to the owner's book, Bitter Almonds.
