All these comments about how he sounds like other composers of his day. How can any of us not be influenced by the milleu in which we are born ! Just enjoy the music !
pay them no mind. just empty barrels always trying to prove they've heard them all.
When you taste marzipan and you are expecting something better it is ok to make note.
Giusta osservazione.
Just discovered Stephen Elmasyan and he is already one of my favorits. Love him
Elmas was born into a family of wealthy entrepreneurs in Smyrna (now İzmir), a city in the Ottoman Empire. It was soon discovered that the little boy was a child prodigy: he began taking piano lessons and writing short piano pieces under the tutelage of a local music teacher, Mr. Moseer, and already at the age of thirteen, the young virtuoso performed an all-Liszt piano recital.
*born to an Armenian family
Another unknown composer to add to my list thank you so much for sharing him with those of us who appreciate such good music
The orchestra is pretty atrocious but damn this piece is amazing. It's such a pity how many phenomenal works exist but are unheard. This as well as Elmas' other piano concerti and also Moszkowski's and Schawenka's, Scriabin's and Medtner's (Number one) all need to be played. I hope to play all of these works soon enough.
Good luck with the Medtner #1
Love Moszkowski’s
I'm adding Busoni to the list.
"The orchestra is atrocious"? You're an idiot, and an arrogant asshole at that.
A phantastic unknown composer. His music is full-romantic with nice clear themes!
A real discovery!! Listen also to his 2° pianoconcerto another phantastic work!!!
Very nice for listening!😊 Thanks ❤
Yes very beautiful!
As soon as I heard the piano opening, I realized this is much to my liking. Thank you for uploading.
A classical piece of music does tend to please one immediately or not at all.
This is an awesome Concerto so well performed and executed! This Composer who I have never heard before is plain and simple astonishing!
Music is astounding when it arouses an emotion or a mood within you. it's not necessarily about being melodic, religious or overtly musical, but about carrying the listener somewhere where he was not before. In this case, I feel like sitting on a dense park bench by a warm evening. the wind gently caresses my face, and everything is silent except for the nature around me. It is interesting that I mention that it evokes the silence when I speak of this kind of music
Very very NOYCE!
Cada día se enriquece mi vida. Un desconocido que llega para quedarse.
Une pure merveille 🙏🎶❤️🎶
performed by two of my friends who made Elmas music known .
Just discovered this composer, can't believe that I have never heard of him till now. Stephan Elman, an Armenian composer that lost his hearing at 35, was married to Aimee, a painter with no arms! They lived together for 26 years, until the death of Stephan. What a remarkable story of two remarkable talented artists
Very moving story! Thanks
Great find thank you! How delicate and precious this is.
I'm an Armenian (American) pianist and never heard of him!! Thank you very much for posting this concerto!!!
what are you? (you)
Great discovery for me !
Stephen Elmas can sound rather 'worthy' in places, but when he is himself then he is so worth listening to. His other concertos will certainly get a hearing.
Tepper Michael.
A wonderful piece.
bravo! not heard this one before, some nice passages of music
Simply beautiful.
Superbe! Quel souffle !!!
Hermoso!
Marcel Noya There is no need of strict use of english if someone wants to express himself on its native language. He basically explained how he felt each note of the Larghetto, and how fully of richness the composition is, loving the magical entrances of the orchestra, and how it interacts with the piano voice
Great Music! Thanks for shaming
Extraordinary....Thanks for sharing 🌹
Many thanks for this rarest of treasures! To read that Elmas was European-trained did not surprise me, though I guessed (incorrectly) that some of his training was in France. The Wikipedia article is thankfully informative; as of August 2014 Grove's "Dictionary of Music and Musicians" has no article on him.
Ted Wilks
He was born in Smyrna (today’s Izmir in Turkey). The city is actually in Europe, and at the time of Elmas’ birth, it was a mainly Christian city with the bulk of population being Greek, Armenian and also a considerably large Jewish minority.
@@johnsarkissian5519 Thanks for your comments.
A good dose of Chopin, a sprinkling of Schumann , add some maniacal Liztian finger-acrobatics - pour some nice melodies over it all - et voila! But that is not to diminish this gem - it´s worth listening to - and would merit an upload in better sound quality! Excellent pianist in this recording by the way! Bravo to the artists and thank you for the upload!
Indeed, there seem to b actual quotes from Chopin's first concerto.
Sounds like Elmas to me. Why everything have to cross referenced with the hugely popular male composers of high society academia? Fair question, I think.
@@azraelslight Excellent comment! I think the same but some people are so obsessed to make comparisons like some sort of music experts!
He was a student of Franz Liszt.
Incredible!
Surprisingly full and rich work both in content and form. Thank you.
I believe so many of these late romantic composers were strong with emotional motifs, but quite weak in developing theme and melody and carrying it thorough their composition.Lots of bait...no fish.
@Geoff G Probably so.
Excelente ¡
The last movement is borderline - but the first two are nothing short of great.
Intense drama. Love it
I love how some suits in the era had such tiny lapel, very cute.
Very romantic. Solidly entrenched in the late Romantic period of Dohnányi and Moszkowski. Interesting how these concertos were top of the concert program at one time before sinking into obscurity--the graveyard of forgotten piano concertos as I like to refer to it.
Great!
Magnifique !

ADORO
The Larghetto is interesting, very lyrical.
It's beautiful .
It is said to be dedicated to Anton Rubinstein. No wonder the pounding chords and bold style sound so much like Rubinstein's piano concertos.
Grossartig! Great!
This has just come up on auto cue.....crumbs, Elmas is certainly giving it some ! Forthright material
The key is G minor.

THEY ARE STUCK TO CHOPINS INFLUENCE .DONT THEY HERE THE COMPLETE DIFFERENCE SPECIALLY HOW MELODIOUS HE IS ON HIIS OWN.DO WE ALL HAVE TO BE EXPERTS AND NOT ENJOY THIS LOVELY MUSIC
Alexia Simeonidi I personally don’t hear any Choppy so well, I’m just enjoying a fresh piece
@@alejandrom.4680 WHEN I SAY THEY ARE STUCK I MEAN THE BELOW COMMENTATORW.BEING A GREAT DMIRER OF CHOPIN I DON REPEAT DONT SEE ANY INFLUENCE WHATSOEVER ALEJANDRO
All I can say is the composer must have listened to Chopin's 2nd concerto...a lot. Not to disparage his talent, his effort is noteworthy plus the melodies he devised aren't insignificant nor trivial either. My contention however is that it will take me sometime to connect to this emotionally, notwithstanding the prejudice that will arise soon as I hear "Chopinesque" episodes on the piano solo parts and on the tutti sections. But I promise to be unprejudiced as much as I could : )
listen?...recording was not invented at this time.....probably he knew Chopin's work for playing it more tahn by «listening»....
Kiu jugl
Just forget Chopin. The structure of this composition bears absolutely no resemblance to anything Chopin ever wrote for Piano & Orchestra. If you listen to music on it's own merit rather than comparing it with what you already know, you will get a lot more out if it. Good luck.
Every musical period is punctuated by the influence of its composers, so I don't get what you mean by 'prejudice.' Why not just enjoy each composition for what it is?
Pretentious....your taste way too refined to appreciate this composition for what it is.
Composed in Chopin/Liszt style but 70 years post Chopin's death. Let's be honest: Easy to listen, flashy music but with little depth and value.
C’mon .. the value of art is mainly enjoyment and you can see there’s a lot of it here. Who cares about the value of say Ligeti whom hardly anyone listens.
