  • In the 1990s a film crew decided that Maya Bay, on the island of Phi Phi Leh in southern Thailand, was the kind of heaven-on-earth idyll where a group of people who wanted to rebuild society from scratch might settle.
The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was released in the year 2000. Based on the book by Alex Garland, it tells the story of a backpacker's search for a legendary beach untouched by tourism. Obviously things turn sour in paradise.
Since then this tiny, but now iconic, strip of sand has topped bucket lists of people around the world consumed by wanderlust.
Already high, the volume of visitors to the area saw an astonishing spike in 2016 when Chinese tourists started coming in large numbers

Don't touch it, don't let people come near it, don't let it become just one of the tourist destinations.
This Maya Beach is one of its own and it's probably best to let it 'live' by its own. It is a treasure and it's, by any means, should be left alone in its own glory!

People do still go to the island. It's just tourism they are stopping. Officials and those who take care of the island are allowed. As well as media, with permits. A lot better than the 12hr a day constant boat and human traffick of thousands. I live in Phuket, Maya Bay is off our coast.

Nice to know that the Thai government has a plan to restore the beauty of its national treasure. I was there back in 2016 & fortunately for me took a personal guide who brought me before the hoard of tourists descend upon its shores. I did manage to have a small beach to myself for the most part & thought how special this moment is knowing this is one of the most stopped beaches for tourists. I love Thailand but seeing the amount of people that visit its islands each year does takes away the pristineness. There is a fine line of tourism & nature conservation. We as tourists should be more mindful & try to reduce our impact so that the next generations may also enjoy the beauty of its beaches.

50% of our rain forests are gone. Man has doubled its population to over 7 billion in 50 years. pesticides are killing us, food is toxic. Air is toxic, ground water toxic, melting polar ice caps, global warming the seas full of plastic and pollution, 2000 nuclear bomb tests in the last 60 years and NOW chem-trails bombarding and positioning us from above with aluminum oxide and other heavy toxic metals. Wars, pollution, disease and civil Unrest. Closing one beach won’t help anything. Voting a new government won’t help anything. Listen to me we are living in critical times hard to deal with as the Bible says. The end of this system is coming and a new government God’s government will rule for a 1000 years after Armageddon and then YHWH will take control from Christ.

@@Jemand-if5dj I did my advanced PADI course around Koh Phi Phi and when we passed it all we hired a speedboat for the day which took us out to Maya Bay. As I said it was before filming, infact the day before we left Leonardo DiCaprio and his entourage turned up in their yachts ready for work. Some of my mates met him in a bar that evening but I was on an early boat out of there the next day so was having an early night. Apparently the film crew ripped out some palm trees and planted new fake ones to make the film set but that was the least of it, we heard. When they had finished they just paid someone off to do the 'tidying up'. It was left in a terrible state.

I was fortunate enough to visit Maya Beach, exactly one year ago, it was still open to the public, I took the early bird tour to avoid the crowds, we were the second group to arrive, and omg, one of the most sublime experiences I’ve ever had, so peaceful and beautiful; but in a matter of 30 minutes or so, everything went downhill. The crowds were absurd, people and boats filled the entire beach, it was such a bummer to realized I was part of that mess, so I am glad they have decided to temporarily close it, this place needs a rest, hopefully a long one.

I wish the Australian government would work out some long term environmental strategies. We are a first world country with draconian environmental policies. I went to the Tarkine recently and had a deeply spiritual experience in the forest only to drop in at the Blockade down the road to discover they are trying to log that small treasure that is left as well. I was devastated because I have experienced its' beauty and cannot believe it could ever be considered for destruction in exchange for money. SHAME!!

I visited Maya Beach in 2005..... it was just after the tsunami of 2004. There were only about 4 people at the time I visited, so I've seen it without masses of people, and it really is beautiful. The only way to keep this place alive and pristine is to keep it closed for a very long time .... and never allow the massive amounts of tourists that were previously visiting this place. I have my doubts the Thai authorities will be able to manage this, but let's hope so.
