There’s an interview with Chris Holmes that just came out within the last 3 weeks or so. He explains that he was laid up in the hospital with a broken leg when Eddie asked to borrow his guitar. Chris said “Sure, just go to my house and tell my mom I said it was okay for you to pick it up.” What a trip! Chris, Eddie and Al were all living at home with their folks at the time. And DLR was living with his dad!
Does Brian or any of you guys know if Ed used the Schaffer Wireless in the studio? seen pics but would love to know if he did. Great round table discussion. Enjoyed it immensely
@@ryanmcinnis8190 I get a little boost when I use my Samson wireless. It's one bonus that I can hear cause I don't use very often. I would imagine they would cable any electric guitar in a recording session.

11:34 - EVH borrowed Chris Holmes’ Ibanez Destroyer for the recording of 1980 W&CF. For VH1 Ed had his own Destroyer, which he had painted white (or silver?) and hacked before the promo videos were filmed and the tour began. 14:51 - Quadrant 4 from Billy Cobham’s 1973 album Spectrum. 16:44 - In his biography Ted Templeman recounts (p. 321) that the band wanted to make a mini movie and needed a soundtrack for it. They hoped it would buy them some time-off from making another album. They recorded Pretty Woman as the single, Happy Trails as the b-side, and Intruder to fill the spare time in the movie. After it became a hit, they had to make an album (Diver Down) to capitalize on the momentum of the single ... and got no hiatus.
I always thought it was interesting that he said that the mods to the destroyer wrecked the tone seeing as he still played it quite a bit live and apparently used it on vhii for "out of love" and "light up the sky"
Their manager's book also talked about Diver Down. Said Warner Bros considered Fair Warning a bit of a failure because it had no hit single. Pretty Woman was released by Warner Bros within a week of it being recorded. Then pressured them to put together enough music to release an album. The manager speculated that if they had been able to take some time off after the Fair Warning tour that the band probably wouldn't have broken up as soon as they did.
It was painted white during the sessions. Afterward he sawed out the bottom of the guitar to the “Shark” shape and painted it with the red and silver-grey/white color. But there are many close up color photos of the guitar between ‘75-‘77 in pure white. It was originally in the stock Ibanez amber epoxy finish before that.
@@matthias5163 He definitely used it for “Outta Love Again” and it possibly may have been used for the main track of “Women In Love” and possibly “Bottoms Up”, but “Light Up The Sky” has lots of standard Fender tremolo work...it was definitely the black and white iteration of the Frankenstein for that one.
EVH wasn't just breaking new ground, he reinvented the guitar, rock music, and the whole world of guitar manufacturing and amplifiers with it. His singular effect on all of it, world wide, can never be fully appreciated or overestimated. Think about it, he changed everything.

Don Landee must have purposely avoided media of any kind his entire career. To this day you Google him and you get the same two pictures, the one with him and Eddie and a group photo with Steve Rosen, Eddie, and Les Paul. I’ve never found any video footage of him being interviewed and there is very little print interviews to find. The guy is a total fucking enigma.

One tragedy (beside Ed's death) is that no one got Edward to discuss the dual JBL/Celestian speaker set up before he died. No one got Ed to play all of this classic riffs on camera so we could see how he did it. Even 40 years later much of it is a mystery, though many guitarists have figured much of it out. But, having had Ed show us would have been gold.
Fair Warning is my favorite album. Hard to have favorites but that album is such an excellent sledge hammer of Van Halen!!! Thank you SO MUCH for doing this series!!! So incredible!!!

"Feelin' Groovy" by the Harpers Bizarre was on the air at Boss Radio KHJ-Los Ángeles on February 10, 1967. It was on the KHJ Boss 30 survey "Hitbound" for the survey February 15, 1967. There is an aircheck were Boss Radio Jock, Humble Harve plays it on his show! So Ted Templeman had to have been in early 1967 or as late 1966 at Sunset Sound!
Brian Kehew is clearly wicked smart and very articulate. I'm soaking up every word here & loving it. The sole reason I picked up a guitar and started playing was because of Eddie. Still listen to all those VH albums and never get tired of or bored with that music. Inspiring!
Absolutely agree about out of love again with Alex's drum track is amazing there's Parts in it where he's actually following Eddie's guitar riffs on the leads Alex is definitely a great drummer

So much cool Eddie info and insights here. As far as the Floyd Trem springs goes, I’ve seen photos where when he started using the fat brass block where the springs attach, he used 2 springs in a V with the claw screwed in tight to the body. He was constantly experimenting.
Hey guys, So here's my unwanted opinion.... - I frickin LOVE all of these posts, BEYOND EXCELLENT WORK. - You could have gotten "Nerdier" for MY personal taste. I've been a Van Halen/ Alex Van Halen fan since 1979.(By "Nerdier" I mean I wish that you would have spoken about what were Alex's EXACT drum kit set ups for EACH individual.albums.) - it's been stated that Eddie always plays bass guitar on at least one track of every album and for YEARS I've ALWAYS believed that that's him on bass guitar on "Dirty Movie's" from Fair Warning. From beginning to end it has ALL the tellings of Eddie and NOT my FOREVER #1 Rock bass player of all time Mr. Michael Anthony. - Also, I really would have appreciated MORE in depth discussion on the phenomenal three-part harmony backup vocals. Like how DLR would sometimes overdub a backup vocal part to make the back up vocals "richer" And did Alex ever contribute his vocals to ANY tracks on ANY albums? - I appreciate you guys so much with these posts. They REALLY helped me so much during my grieving process. Sometimes I still can't believe that he's gone. Thanks again, God bless ALL of you guys ALWAYS!!!
The brief discussion of Fair Warning was cool. Overshadowed by a couple of other classic tracks, I think "Hear About It Later" is seriously overlooked - songwriting, arrangement, performance, recording, mix, and Ed just being Ed. It's an amazing listen on every level ... maybe their best. Sunset Sound should be tremendously proud to have made these recorded moments possible.
The stereo reverb explanation from Brian is a major revelation to me and most who, as Brian said, always thought the reverb was panned to one side and the guitar was panned to the other...Not so!
I left Rochester N.Y. on Dec, 31,1966 got on a plane to L.A. Arrive at LAX Jan. 1, 1967. Stayed at the Hollywood Sunset Hotel ,and the Colonial West both on Sunset . A different world in those those days . The others staying there Peter Asher, P.F. Sloan, Little Richard , Harper’s Bizarre and others I can’t recall. I got to know a couple of guys in HB quite well Ted Templeman being one. -I was a staff writer,and session player - Everyone would cross paths in the elevator ,lounge or restaurant everyday. In April or May 1967 I think it was Asher Benjamin - a great writer - said he saw McCartney in a limo down on Santa Monica Blvd. a few days later the Harper’s manager invited Benjamin ,and me up to his room to hear something with the other guys in HB, we didn’t have a clue. We go up smoked a joint ,and he pulls out a 1/4 in tape ,and threads it. It was “ A Day In the Life “ . Needless to say it blew everyone away. Ted was a nice guy that looked more like a guy going to prep school than a guy i a light rock band. “ Feelin Groovy “ was a hit at the time . Fast forward to July 1967 . I was in Rochester doing an interview at a radio station WBBF - had a regional hit in summer of 65 - as I’m leaving the elevator door opens ,and the Harper’s get off. None of us could believe it. We talked for a few minutes,and I went with them for an interview they were doing. Ted was a good shit - upstate lingo for a good guy - . I was blown away years later when I heard his name as a producer , I can’t recall which album it was, maybe Van Halen. I do remember it was a total disconnect for me. Ted was the singer in HB ,and would be the last person I would have thought would still be in the music biz. Not only still in but a monumental influence as a producer. Success couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
That ripley guitar Brian mentions is what Ed used on the recording of Top Jimmy. Listen close & you'll hear that some strings are panned left and some are panned right. It's a very subtle but cool sound. Every pole in the pickups of that guitar are wired individually through pan pots that send the signal to one of two output jacks (or varying amounts of both).
Most likely influenced by quadrant 4 billy cobham or space boogie Jeff beck, but that Trevor rabin track sounds like it too. Thx, never heard before. Great stuff
The Trevor Rabin track is most obvious... that little drum break (very HFT), the rhythm...not so much Quadrant 4. If Edward discovered Holdsworth he may have easily heard the Rabin album.
Have a few notes from Donn Landee about the UA/Bushnell 5150 console. The console was sold several years ago and is in Canada. UA2100 and UA2100SC strips of course. All compressor pulled out and pan pots added.
Wasn’t it parceled out by Brent Averill a few years ago? There was a “Van Halen” console that he turned into sets of rackmount pre-amps. Example here: preampchannelstrip.net/rare_vintage_universal_audio_brent_averill_1108_dual_channel_mic_pres.htm
Those are 1108’s of course, the 5150 desk had a few when Donn could get them. I have an email from Donn where he explains a few things that were changed as it was modded. I do have a picture of the console when it was pulled out of a warehouse and the studio it went to. I was trying my best to purchase it...but was too late. It was posted on eBay and Gearslutz too. But I don’t doubt a few 1108’s ended up at Brents. Richard Kaplan (Indigo Ranch) told me he purchased the 1 of 2 UA desks from United Western..Eddie ended up with the other for his 5150 studio.
@@deandydek433 Here is an old GearSlutz thread where Avedis Kifedjian explains what he did. Reportedly Brent Averill got all the modules from the 5150 consoles, and Avedis racked them up for retail. It is also really cool that back in the day, everything was done on one console with limited outboard gear. It keeps you more focused on the music and the writing over the gear.
I think Fair Warning is underrated. There is so much innovation on songs other than Mean Street. Push Comes to shove and One foot out the door, are so clean. I don’t hear any over dubs, just mic’d instruments and an ambient mic.
I hoping somewhere out there is a properly recorded version of “I wanna be your lover”. I don’t know if that was ever done at SSR, but if it ever was it would be amazing to hear. I’d buy it!
Evh said in a 1982 interview that’s on CZcams that it was Dave’s idea to put out pretty woman just as a new fun single to start the year. It became a hit single and Warner brothers told the band they need a album to go along with it

'Intruder' by Peter Gabriel. Ed was a huge Genesis fan. Not a coincidence. It's not a proper cover, but if you listen to Gabriel's 'Intruder' and Van Halen's... you can hear the lineage. (credit to Vernon Reid)
Edwards ability to piece together a usable guitar on first attempt is mind blowing. To the average person this would be against all odds. If his biggest challenge at the end of the day was the need to wd40 the nut periodically on his pre-Floyd Rose system, Eddie absolutely far exceeded all expectations. Great stuff, Thanks 🎸

My friends and I at the time LOVED Fair Warning…we lived it as part of the soundtrack to our lives….and to me, I’ve always thought it was one of their best albums, musically.
11:34 - I could swear that when I was reading YEARS ago about how Ed would tear apart and rebuild or modify guitars, he had borrowed a guitar from Chris Holmes, and cut a chunk out of it to make it look cooler, which ended up changing the sound of the guitar for the worse, so he had to buy Chris a new guitar. At 24:56, in regard to the Gene Simmons-produced demo, "No one has the original tape..." And 26:59, "Maybe Gene Simmons has his tapes..." Actually, it's probably at 5150. EDWARD has the tapes. Everyone knows the story about the brothers backing Gene on three songs he demoed for KISS (two were on "Love Gun," and one ended up on his 1978 solo album). Gene wanted to put those on the 2001 KISS box set, but couldn't get the approval from Ed and Al. Forward to Gene's "Vault" box set of demos dating back to the 1960s which he put out a few years ago. The demos with the brothers are on there, and to get permission from them to include them, he agreed to give them the master tapes from the demos he produced for them. So, there you go. Who has the Gene Simmons tapes? They're at Ed's place. And as for demos pre-dating even those, I know they were recording demos as far back as 1973. Roth played some on his show before. You can find stuff like "Glitter," "Angel Eyes," and "Gentlemen of Leisure" on CZcams. Those might have even been recorded with Mark Stone on bass.
An interesting footnote maybe - 'China Town' from the last album - Wolf and EVH revisit the tapping / guitar / bass doubling a la the unreleased Hot For Teacher cut. It's not a harmoniser.

Absolutely agree about out of love again with Alex's drum track is amazing there's Parts in it where he's actually following Eddie's guitar riffs on the leads Alex is definitely a great drummer

As a VanHalen fan of 30 years and guitar player I think these shows are incredible. Thanks to Sunset Studios for this. Also I love the Realistic shirt.. that's Radio Shack brand from back in the 80s!

These videos are just so awesome. I really hope we'll get more VH material in the coming years. Seems like there's much more than even the 5150 wall of tapes.

So much cool Eddie info and insights here. As far as the Floyd Trem springs goes, I’ve seen photos where when he started using the fat brass block where the springs attach, he used 2 springs in a V with the claw screwed in tight to the body. He was constantly experimenting.

So here's my unwanted opinion....
- I frickin LOVE all of these posts, BEYOND EXCELLENT WORK.
- You could have gotten "Nerdier" for MY personal taste. I've been a Van Halen/ Alex Van Halen fan since 1979.(By "Nerdier" I mean I wish that you would have spoken about what were Alex's EXACT drum kit set ups for EACH individual.albums.)
- it's been stated that Eddie always plays bass guitar on at least one track of every album and for YEARS I've ALWAYS believed that that's him on bass guitar on "Dirty Movie's" from Fair Warning. From beginning to end it has ALL the tellings of Eddie and NOT my FOREVER #1 Rock bass player of all time Mr. Michael Anthony.
- Also, I really would have appreciated MORE in depth discussion on the phenomenal three-part harmony backup vocals.
Like how DLR would sometimes overdub a backup vocal part to make the back up vocals "richer"
And did Alex ever contribute his vocals to ANY tracks on ANY albums?

The brief discussion of Fair Warning was cool. Overshadowed by a couple of other classic tracks, I think "Hear About It Later" is seriously overlooked - songwriting, arrangement, performance, recording, mix, and Ed just being Ed. It's an amazing listen on every level ... maybe their best. Sunset Sound should be tremendously proud to have made these recorded moments possible.
The stereo reverb explanation from Brian is a major revelation to me and most who, as Brian said, always thought the reverb was panned to one side and the guitar was panned to the other...Not so!
He specially talking about the chamber (echo) not reverb. That would usually be mono with one mic on the plate, the chamber would be miked in stereo

Arrive at LAX Jan. 1, 1967.
Stayed at the Hollywood Sunset Hotel ,and the Colonial West both on Sunset .
A different world in those those days .
The others staying there Peter Asher, P.F. Sloan, Little Richard , Harper’s Bizarre and others I can’t recall.
I got to know a couple of guys in HB quite well Ted Templeman being one.
-I was a staff writer,and session player -
Everyone would cross paths in the elevator ,lounge or restaurant everyday.
In April or May 1967 I think it was Asher Benjamin - a great writer - said he saw McCartney in a limo down on Santa Monica Blvd. a few days later the Harper’s manager invited Benjamin ,and me up to his room to hear something with the other guys in HB, we didn’t have a clue.
We go up smoked a joint ,and he pulls out a 1/4 in tape ,and threads it.
It was “ A Day In the Life “ .
Needless to say it blew everyone away.
Ted was a nice guy that looked more like a guy going to prep school than a guy i a light rock band.
“ Feelin Groovy “ was a hit at the time .
Fast forward to July 1967 . I was in Rochester doing an interview at a radio station WBBF - had a regional hit in summer of 65 - as I’m leaving the elevator door opens ,and the Harper’s get off. None of us could believe it. We talked for a few minutes,and I went with them for an interview they were doing.
Ted was a good shit - upstate lingo for a good guy - .
I was blown away years later when I heard his name as a producer , I can’t recall which album it was, maybe Van Halen.
I do remember it was a total disconnect for me.
Ted was the singer in HB ,and would be the last person I would have thought would still be in the music biz.
Not only still in but a monumental influence as a producer. Success couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
That ripley guitar Brian mentions is what Ed used on the recording of Top Jimmy. Listen close & you'll hear that some strings are panned left and some are panned right. It's a very subtle but cool sound. Every pole in the pickups of that guitar are wired individually through pan pots that send the signal to one of two output jacks (or varying amounts of both).

The Hot For Teacher intro that sounds borrowed, is the drums from Trevor Rabin's song Looking For A Lady(wolfman), from the 1981 album Wolf.
Most likely influenced by quadrant 4 billy cobham or space boogie Jeff beck, but that Trevor rabin track sounds like it too. Thx, never heard before. Great stuff
It’s 100% “Quadrant 4” from Spectrum.
The Trevor Rabin track is most obvious... that little drum break (very HFT), the rhythm...not so much Quadrant 4. If Edward discovered Holdsworth he may have easily heard the Rabin album.

I've heard Eruption goes back to the backyard party days and was originally 10 minutes long
Have a few notes from Donn Landee about the UA/Bushnell 5150 console. The console was sold several years ago and is in Canada. UA2100 and UA2100SC strips of course. All compressor pulled out and pan pots added.
Wasn’t it parceled out by Brent Averill a few years ago? There was a “Van Halen” console that he turned into sets of rackmount pre-amps.

Those are 1108’s of course, the 5150 desk had a few when Donn could get them. I have an email from Donn where he explains a few things that were changed as it was modded. I do have a picture of the console when it was pulled out of a warehouse and the studio it went to. I was trying my best to purchase it...but was too late.
It was posted on eBay and Gearslutz too. But I don’t doubt a few 1108’s ended up at Brents.
Richard Kaplan (Indigo Ranch) told me he purchased the 1 of 2 UA desks from United Western..Eddie ended up with the other for his 5150 studio.

Here is an old GearSlutz thread where Avedis Kifedjian explains what he did. Reportedly Brent Averill got all the modules from the 5150 consoles, and Avedis racked them up for retail.
I recall the frame going for sale completely unloaded (~10 year ago?).

Going back my emails with EW, he shared a conversation between Dave Gordon and Donn Landee, you're right as Brent did rack the 1108's from that desk. But EW states it wasnt parted out. This was back on 4/2008.

It is also really cool that back in the day, everything was done on one console with limited outboard gear. It keeps you more focused on the music and the writing over the gear.

I think Fair Warning is underrated. There is so much innovation on songs other than Mean Street. Push Comes to shove and One foot out the door, are so clean. I don’t hear any over dubs, just mic’d instruments and an ambient mic.

Evh said in a 1982 interview that’s on CZcams that it was Dave’s idea to put out pretty woman just as a new fun single to start the year. It became a hit single and Warner brothers told the band they need a album to go along with it

Outta Love Again is my #2 all time fave VH tune(after On Fire). I believe that Alex played part of Outta Love Again in his solo n the latter part of the 93 tour.
'Intruder' by Peter Gabriel. Ed was a huge Genesis fan. Not a coincidence. It's not a proper cover, but if you listen to Gabriel's 'Intruder' and Van Halen's... you can hear the lineage. (credit to Vernon Reid)
Edwards ability to piece together a usable guitar on first attempt is mind blowing. To the average person this would be against all odds. If his biggest challenge at the end of the day was the need to wd40 the nut periodically on his pre-Floyd Rose system, Eddie absolutely far exceeded all expectations. Great stuff, Thanks 🎸

One track that I never hear mentioned that is one of my favorites is Girl Gone Bad from 1984. Just an incredible riff top to bottom.
My friends and I at the time LOVED Fair Warning…we lived it as part of the soundtrack to our lives….and to me, I’ve always thought it was one of their best albums, musically.

11:34 - I could swear that when I was reading YEARS ago about how Ed would tear apart and rebuild or modify guitars, he had borrowed a guitar from Chris Holmes, and cut a chunk out of it to make it look cooler, which ended up changing the sound of the guitar for the worse, so he had to buy Chris a new guitar.
At 24:56, in regard to the Gene Simmons-produced demo, "No one has the original tape..." And 26:59, "Maybe Gene Simmons has his tapes..." Actually, it's probably at 5150. EDWARD has the tapes. Everyone knows the story about the brothers backing Gene on three songs he demoed for KISS (two were on "Love Gun," and one ended up on his 1978 solo album). Gene wanted to put those on the 2001 KISS box set, but couldn't get the approval from Ed and Al. Forward to Gene's "Vault" box set of demos dating back to the 1960s which he put out a few years ago. The demos with the brothers are on there, and to get permission from them to include them, he agreed to give them the master tapes from the demos he produced for them. So, there you go. Who has the Gene Simmons tapes? They're at Ed's place. And as for demos pre-dating even those, I know they were recording demos as far back as 1973. Roth played some on his show before. You can find stuff like "Glitter," "Angel Eyes," and "Gentlemen of Leisure" on CZcams. Those might have even been recorded with Mark Stone on bass.

An interesting footnote maybe - 'China Town' from the last album - Wolf and EVH revisit the tapping / guitar / bass doubling a la the unreleased Hot For Teacher cut. It's not a harmoniser.
