Benefits of an Obturation Pen
Obturation Pen System is used to provide heat to the working tip, cut the gutta-percha point,& soften & pressurize the gutta-percha. This video discusses advantages of using an obturation pen and how to use it during a root canal treatment. Using Obturation Pen, one applies pressure in a vertical direction to the heat softened gutta percha and thereby causes it to flow and to fill the entire lumen of the canal. Oturation pen is used after proper preparation and drying of the root canals. It is a system used for Warm Vertical Compaction while doing RCT. Ensure a few things before and while using it:
- A continuous tapering funnel should be present from the root canal orifice to the root apex.
- Root canal should be prepared so that it flows with the shape.
- Shape of Apical foramen should not be changed or moved.
- Apical foramen should be kept as small as is practical so that excess gutta percha will not be forced through it during vertical compaction.
Beginning with the aim to achieve fluid-tight or hermetic seal. Obturation pen helps us get closest to this stage and achieve it. It solves three purposes: 1. Prevent coronal leakage of microorganisms or potential nutrients to support their growth into the dead space of the root canal system; 2. Prevent periapical fluids percolating into the root canals and feeding microorganisms; 3. Entomb any residual microorganisms that have survived the debridement and disinfection stages of treatment, in order to prevent their proliferation and pathogenecity.
