    Biggest problem for Böhmermann is, that a big part of his genius is his eloquence, speed of talking and catchy pronounciation in German. It all gets lost, when he's talking in English immediately, cause then he's got to think before he speaks.

    • @Schleimkeim19
      @Schleimkeim19 Před 5 lety +8

      Carlos Chilipimmel He can actually speak English quite well for an adult who most likely didn’t need to use a lot of English throughout his life, so while it’s obviously some rusty high school level second language that was brushed up, it was brushed up pretty well.

    • @nichl474
      @nichl474 Před 5 lety +86

      @@jenna_maria Did you even hear a German speak with rusty English skills? No, because most Germans forget almost everything and are only able to give the most rudimentary responses a few years after exiting high school. Jan's strongly above-average grasp on the english language, that even teachers could compete with, is an exception. I live in Germany and go to a school that would be the equivalent to an American high school and they can't even use the right form of "be" and forget to put the "s"es on words. They literally speak worse than his "rusty English". I'm literally the exception as a student together with a few other people.

    • @jenna_maria
      @jenna_maria Před 5 lety +28

      Nichl As I said, it was “brushed up pretty well”. You can’t deny his accent and some minor mistakes, most people his age who are of the same education standard as him speak a similar level of English. It’s not like he studied English at university, so yes most of his English has its roots in his high school education. I went to school in Germany as well and I have my Abitur and a lot of people in my English classes, even those who hadn’t been the best English speakers during high school, were able to improve their English for their jobs as adults. He isn’t on an English teacher level, I’m sorry but your English teachers must not have been good if you think so. That said, allow me to add that I’m compring high school to the German Oberstufe and not the German Mittelstufe.

    For foreigners it might be easier to understand if you look at him like a satirical prankster. His stage personality is different from his private personality, which he likes to disguise from the public by inventing contrived stories. Still, his personal experiences often influence his work as a comedian.
    For instance his father was a policeman so he knows a lot about the matter. He made a spoof rap song called "Ich hab Polizei" which was a criticism to wannabe-gangsters but at the same time a criticism to the police force. He f**ks with everybody.
    Take the moment at 2:28 when he said "I'm completely in line with my German chancellor". Nobody laughed because they didn't realize he was being ironic.
    What I am trying to say is that his humor can be very subtle and that you can't take anything he says seriously just like that. He wants you to question everything. That includes breaking taboos.

    I think Böhmi tried to compress the story of his insult poem too much. The most important information would have been, that it was a response to a very harmless piece of a german show called "Extra-3", where Erdogan said he got insulted by the show. THEN Böhmermann did this Poem to educate Erdogan about the difference of humour and an insult! So that is why I find this poem so hilarious and cleverly presented!
    Poor guy, he always gets very serious when it comes to this topic!

      Maybe its our people who are stupid

      Whether something good or bad happens in turkey, the west is showing off turkey as a country with extremes in a negative way. Therefore the turkish gov. (erdogan) can point the finger at the west and start a discussion.

Diese Institutionen sind nichts weiteres als ein Element um die eigene Population zu beeinflussen oder, wie die Vorsitzenden es nennen, um sie zu weiterzubilden.
      Nun zu deinen Vorwürfen, dass die Deutschen besonders rassistisch seien, es gibt in jedem Land tolerante wie auch intolerante Menschen, das kommt auf den Charakter an und nicht auf die jeweilige Volkszugehörigkeit oder religiöse Richtung. Ich finde es echt traurig dass es auf beiden Seiten unserer Völker noch so viel Hass und Inakzeptanz gegenüber den anderen gibt. Vor allem in der heutigen Zeit ist dir Mitarbeit miteinander eine der wichtigsten Grundvoraussetzungen um diese riesigen geopolitischen Probleme zu meistern. Außerdem frag mal deine Großeltern, warum sie sich früher so gut mit den deutschen verstanden haben im Gegensatz zu heute...
      Ansonsten möchte ich noch anmerken, dass du zwar gewissermaßen recht hast mit dem Vorwurf, dass es noch viele intolerante oder rassistische Menschen gibt, aber solange sich alle an unsere Gesetze halten und das Leben des anderen respektieren ist ja alles in Ordnung. If the little guy from Istanbul finds it insulting, because he isn't capable of understanding what context is and the poem did describe him too accurately, then it's his problem for not listening more carefully

    Some context:
    In March of 2017 another German satire program "extra 3" broadcast a song lampooning Erdogan and his autocratic politics. Erdogan responded by summoning the German ambassador and demanding the cancellation of the show. Then, in answer to Erdogan's overreaction and the public discussion about it, Böhmermann read his "deliberately hurtful" poem, rife with apparent falsehoods, so as to illustrate where the line between free speech and defamation really lies. The essence of the joke was this: "No, Erdogan, what they did was perfectly fine, what I'll do now, on the other hand, isn't."
    Also: Who does Böhmermann think he is appearing on international talk shows with his atrocious English?
    (edit: changed the wording a bit to prevent further misunderstandings)

    • @PerHultqvist
      @PerHultqvist Před 6 lety +38

      What do you mean with "atrocious english"? His english is better than most Swedes and Germans english.

    • @pedterson
      @pedterson Před 6 lety +19

      1. "atrocious English": 8:40
      2. "deliberately hurtful": That's the point he made. It wasn't about saying crass things to be edgy. He's not an insult comic. The joke was: Free speech has its limits, and just so you know what they are, THIS is was you cannot do... and then he does it.

    • @PerHultqvist
      @PerHultqvist Před 6 lety +10
