  • Dr. Valter Longo returns to the podcast to talk about his new book, The Longevity Diet. The Italian scientist is professor in Gerontology and Biological Science and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. The book, already a best-seller in Italy, is the result of decades of research - including laboratory and field studies - into the mechanisms behind the aging process. The diet is based on a low protein and fish-based plan with periodic periods of fasting. In this in-depth interview Dr. Longo explains why he believes it is the optimal regime to live a long and healthy life; how getting to the age of 110 is a realistic goal, and why the word ‘intermittent’ should be banished from conversations about diet.

    Yes! We need to stop judging based on calendar age! I'm 60, look less than 40, come from centenarians, have no disease, expect to live a long and healthy lif, but am judged by being 60. People tell me to slow down, expect illness, say stupid things, constantly. Even my doctor! This shouldn't be happening.

      then just don't tell people your age... if you look under 40, no one will know, and they won't comment right. Most people should mind their own business anyway.

    Prof Longo's humility and "first do no harm" attitude is so refreshing and admirable. You really get the sense that even without the lawyers watching he'd still be cautious. What you do when no one is watching is a pretty good indication of character. Would be nice if we had more of that. Especially in the medical and drug fields, the former of which actually takes a "first do no harm" oath but seems to have been beaten into shape by the pharmaceutical overlords.

    I don't think the Centinarians lived nearly as extreme lives as many people who are into healthy food and fitness. They seem to me to be supported by the traditional values and a healthy diet. They work hard which gives them a bit of exercise. There was even a study of a group of them who moved to America and started eating lard, etc. who still kept their health and longevity advantage. I personally would rather try to be more like them than a lot of the people I see on CZcams.

      The impact of the FMD is more pronounced when the regime is repeated at regular intervals (as designed) but interesting to hear that its use one time resulted in improvements.

    Thank you for explaining why you add fish 2x week to a plant based diet! I appreciate your reasons in doing this for simplicity for those who may be missing nutrients as a Vegan.

    • @seitanbeatsyourmeat666
      @seitanbeatsyourmeat666 Před rokem

      Vegans don’t miss nutrients, even Dott. Longo admits this. As you age, you need slightly more protein, mostly due to reduced ability in digestion. This happens to everyone, including vegans.
      Don’t spew easily disproven BS just to hate vegans 😊

    Do we need to add olive oil in our diets? Many vegan doctors say we should Not add any processed oils to a Whole Food Plant based diet.. but instead get them from nuts, seeds, avacado, etc.

    • @axel_r_
      @axel_r_ Před rokem

      Be sure to use "extra virgin" olive oils. Those are not processed.

    • @seitanbeatsyourmeat666
      @seitanbeatsyourmeat666 Před rokem +4

      It’s really best to just eat whole food sources of beneficial oils: ground flaxseed, avocados, nuts, olives
      The problem with oil is it’s a major source of calories that don’t provide satiation, which can lead to a quick increase in weight… fat storage supports formation of things like cancers, diabetes, high bp
      The folks that freak out over any oil are just looking for an “enemy”, and I consider them extremists. A tablespoon of olive oil on a green salad won’t hurt you, but if you instead add in the above foods and it’s even tastier, more nutritious AND more filling

    • @lamadoo

      Dr. Esselstyn and Neal Bernard have created a No Oil mantra in the community which has stigmatised extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) despite the evidence behind it being good. However, this can all come to an end now, if you have a look at the "Trending Cardiovascular Nutrition Controversies" from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology which is authored by Dr. Esselstyn and Neal Bernard themselves, they have recommended EVOO as heart healthy.

    • @ash9x9
      @ash9x9 Před 4 měsíci

      I add 2 tbl. spoons of EVOO daily in my bowl of steel cut oats. I drink 1 tbl spoon in straight in the afternoon(no lunch) and dinner at 7-ish. EVOO is the best form to consume.

    Calorie restriction doesn’t work. Feed the body what we have been eating for 275,000 years…animal products. Low carb high protein, high fat. Eat from 12-8pm. Done. Dropped 20lbs and am no longer prediabetic eating this way over the past year. Beef, fish, pork and poultry is healthy. The longevity diet is what our ancestors ate. We don’t need to recreate the wheel.

      @@retribution999 carbohydrates, while they taste good are completely unnecessary when it comes to nourishing our bodies. If you remove them from the diet, biomarkers like glucose levels, insulin levels etc. improve along with metabolic health. I love bread as much as the next guy but the science is showing how destructive carbs are. Humans have potentially been eating wild grains for 20-30,000 years but in very small quantities and only when in season. Given a choice, meat will provide significantly higher bioavavailable protein and fat that will aid in survival and lend itself to adding lean mass (muscle).
