HOW TO - Fix Stuck descaling program on Delonghi ECAM Coffee Machines ECAM 290.xx EVO models

- Uploaded this to help anyone who has a Delonghi bean to Cup Coffee Machine, its for the Magnifica EVO (Ecam 290.xx models) but also applies to other Delonghi models.
Machine "stuck" in Descale mode? Won`t do anything other then say it needs descaling? flashing error lights? Its usually because the descale program has not been run correctly and has been interupted (i.e unplugged) mid cycle. Must be faulty then right?
Errm, No - see this video to see how it should be performed (warning, takes a good 40 minutes or so to let it run correctly!).

1:26 Can't thank you enough for your video. I was close to phoning AO, and sending it back. All is well now thanks to your video. What I would inform you of, this was not a used machine but a brand new one. The moment it was turned on, there was the warning light together with descale. What bloody new machine wants a descale the moment you switch it on. Thanks again, all the best, Ron

I blame Delonghi for making this whole process super hard. It’s not intuitive to have the machine just sitting there doing nothing. They say it takes 45 mins but really it takes at least 1hr. The instructions in my manual are all in pictures, no words. You have to guess what things mean. The Delonghi videos on CZcams show the bean symbols lighting up when they don’t. 15 mins of the process that seemed to be slowly pumping water in bursts were after the descaling solution was to be poured out so what was that about? Also the first part of the descale only descaled the coffee nozzle for about 1min before asking to be switched to the milk nozzle. Again, unintuitive. I dread the descale light coming up again! :-(
why not make it bluetooth where you can connect your phone to the machine and then it becomes way more intuitive

Big THANK YOU - I did first descaling and the controls keep popping up, which was frustrating. I was pretty sure it’s broken (I bought it in secondary market so no warranty) just did the whole thing as you explained and now enjoying my lil coffee ☺️

My machine was stuck in this loop from the moment I tried to set up my brand new machine. While I'm a fan of reading instructions, my friend got a bit excited and said he knew what do and he ended up putting the coffee beans in the ground coffee section! We somehow initiated the descaling cycle and I've been banging my head on wall ever since. There was nothing useful on the De'longhi How-To account, I'm so glad I changed my search phrase and found your video. I followed your advice and let it take its time and voilà, no more flashing lights or descale symbol.
I then enjoyed playing around with it, changing the grind and other settings and finally had a great coffee, two months and 4 hours after unpacking the machine 😆
I can't believe I've known him for 10 years only to find out now he doesn't read instructions 😂

Many thanks for this very useful video & information ...i also thought when the machine stopped for ages that there was a glitch !...madly pressing all the buttons 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ ,which clearly did not help ,i tried to find a troubleshooting site...hallelujah i found yours which explained it all ...problem solved and after 1.5hrs we were happily drinking coffee again ...dreading having to go through the descaling process again though 😬

I have the same problem with the machine and I haven´t used it for 6-8 months now after I bought it and used it for just 4 months I bought. It's kind of frustrating, actually. I hope I will fix mine because I´m looking forward to using it again, specially in the morning when I wake up and need a coffee.
Thank you! The two Delonghi videos I saw didn't mention opening the steam valve so the process stopped waiting for me to do that. The filter coffee light is also flashing but the descale seems to be working ok.
Yeap, the steam valve is part of the descale process so machine won`t complete if you don`t open and close it when prompted.

@@Sortitoutman my delongi was interupted and i foowed ur video but when i press descaling it just works for 2 secindes and then it requires me to push descaling again have been doning it for a few times but no luck.can you please help me
Thanks was very helpful but I agree with some of the comments that says this process shouldn’t take so long. There is a problem in the system.
descaling takes time it has to sit in the pipes to desolve limescale. no problem just user error

I am at a loss. I select the descale button but then the coffee bean indicator lights up and the descale process won’t start. I have no idea what to do or how to make it start.

My machine has almost empty tank , i hear that the pump is trying to get water but it doesn t actually show the add water light , and when i fill the tank again and press the decalcify button , it starts again the process. I ve repeated the process again and again and again ,but water only pops from steam. Any thoughts about this? Thank you!

Hello. Thank you for the video. I have a problem (different model of Delonghi) where on the second cycle of rinsing water goes inwards. And steam doesn't come out in milk frother after descaling. I have washed thoroughly everything considering milk frother, checked clogs...

Where does the liquid the liquid that comes with the DeLONGHI should be put on and do you also recommend adding a water filter mine did not include filter

Did every step exactly correct. Waiting 45 minutes for the milk defrother to begin spitting water but it has not. Any ideas what to do ?The descale button is not flashing but steady. DeLonghi ESAM 3300

thats telling you theres a different issue. check the infuser is clean and not jammed

I got it! I took it to the shop and they exchanged the turbine, he said that an acid was used which was too strong and therefore destroyed the turbine while descaling… even though I used the original delonghi liquid!!!?! I‘ll use some cheap liquid from the discounter from now on

i have a similar one ( ECAM292.81.B ) but the descaling has been interrupted and now everytime i turn it on every light is off but the hot water flashing and the warning sign flashing. When i take the water out the warning and descaling lights are flashing. Any idea what could've happened ?

@@yaraabdullah774 Hi, I had to get mine done professionally because the issue was inside the machine so they had to switch a piece for a new one ... i'm afraid if the descaling goes thru the normal pipes then it might ruin inside pieces
I have the problem that no water comes out from the middle when I turn the steam valve to the right during the rinsing progress. So, it's only rinsing trough the steam pipe..????
Any solutions for your problem since then?
Its supposed to only rinse though the steam pipe when it asks you to open it.
My machine displays these three lights - red descale, caution and flashing clean light …. I press the cleaning light it squirts water from the steam valve 4-5 times but then starts flashing again

Great video! I have a problem with my machine and was qondering if you'd encountered this as well. When i switch on my machine the coffee granule light is flashing repeatedly. Its the one which comes on when you need to empty the used coffee. I think it means the tray isnt inserted correctly, but i cant figure out whats wrong? Ive taken it out many times and cleaned it thoroughly, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Empty the drip tray as well, if water is in there it makes the empty coffee ground bin light come on as it's triggered by weight. You might also have loose grounds somewhere inside the machine.
Its a simple microswitch, check it "clicks" when you push in the tray and again when you remove it. It will also flash when it thinks the machine is in need of a good clean i.e infuser cleaning if there is a restriction in flow of water.
Its just a simple microswitch nothing to do with weight. Light comes on after a certain amount of flow meter turns as a prompt to empty it even if its not full.
My coffee machine has the same problem but the issue is that the descale light (the red one) doesn't flash it just stays still, I did follow these steps that you showed but it still stays that way

If its solid and no other lights then its telling you it needs to start the descale program.

My machine won't pump any water out
My magnifica s ecam model is only pumping water out of the hot water spout and not where the coffee comes out during a descale. Once the water starts coming out of the hot water spout the window just indicates descale underway and then it sits there for a very long time... Over an hour with nothing happening at all, no noises no nothing. Then infuser stuck message comes up which is interesting because I had it in the shop for over a month with that issue but that seems to have been resolved until now. Used to come up when I turned the coffee machine on so this is the first time I've seen it since, while trying a descale. Frustrating and no idea what to do.

you have a different fault, caustion light usually means issue with infuser not being inserted correctly or jammed
Mine requires cleaning every 2 weeks. I do not know what to do?

I followed all steps on the beginning,but after 5sec pushing the descale button the red triangle error warning starts blinking together with hot water button and afted few seconds machine stops and nothing happens. Hello! I wonder if I'm the only one who isn't getting this right.. I've been descaling the machine for 4 hours now. The steam sign keeps flashing, and when I turn the handle to the right, the descaling sign immediately turns red. So I turn it left and there we go again, the water keeps coming out.. Then I add more water, the steam sign flashes again, and that's it, over and over again. Has someone had the same situation? I just want to go to bed now..

For me, the beginning of this is interrupted, and I will only reach the end of the cycle. He hits me 8 times and stops
if its stuck mid cycle you need to let it complete it first then run a full cycle without interuption.
Descale light doesn’t flash
I have the same brand coffee machine and it is the worst coffee machine ever owned, the descaling light NEVER goes off, I have descaled it numerous times and still the descale light is on. Customer support from the company is very poor too. I’m taking it to the tip and going to enjoy watching it get crushed up.
If the descale lights on then you`ve not completed the program........
@@Sortitoutman it has been rinsed out with at least a whole bathtubs worth of water nothing happens. It just keeps emptying out and demanding more water and does it all over again and again.

i have this exact machine and the same issue with the descale light flashing, red descale symbol flashing and the red hazard (!) constantly on. When i press the flashing descale button, no water comes out and the smallest coffee bean light comes on. any help on this issue?
is it normal for the steam valve to shoot some water out, then stop shooting water out shortly after?
Does it try to pump (can you hear the water pump run when you press the button). Or is it quiet

The steam valve knob needs to click before it actually opens. I had the same issue for a while and then I realised that the knob wasn't fully turned.

as per video you need to open or close the steam valve when the light flashes.
