- This is a clip of Fox 6 signing off for the night when they had to conduct transmitter maintenance in 2004. Fox 6 only signed off in 2002 and 2004 for transimitter maintenance, however it never signs off for the night everyday. It signed off in the early to mid 90's every night. There are some funny surprises when fox 6 signed off for the night. One of the things it shows is an old news banner story on the upper right hand side of the screen from earlier in the year that said "Beer Vs. Books."
Commercial breaks even during a TV sign off? Lol
The youngsters today would have a difficult time believing that there was a time when no 24hr television existed. Tv actually did time out. Crazy.
When I was a kid all the channels ran 24/7 except for the asian channels
the oldsters today would have a difficult time believing that today's teenagers always knew there was a time before 24hr tv.
@@sillygoose635 I rememebr TV test patterns growing up and Im only 49 years old so I'm hardly a relic yet
@@flatcapman there are still non 24 hour tv channels (usually local or student), however in my area they make a non event of sign off
Interesting that they played an anthem video made in 1971 when at the time they signed off in 2004.
It's probably something they only used till the mid 90s when they presumably started staying on all night.
An anthem they probably can't play anymore, considering one of the flags in it.
@@richardburkard9839 Or both flags on it. People in this country are offended by everything.
@@TimothyOnline Wow. Grow up.
@@TimothyOnline no they aren't.
WVLA (NBC affiliate in Baton Rouge, LA) signed off for maintenance in 1993. Before signing off they showed this white flag with the station ID on it waving in darkness. And it scared me so much it's been haunting me for more than half a year now! This station did it right!
You know something? WTXF had a signoff similar to this clip. Back in 1997 WTXF would sign off every Monday morning from 2:30 to 5, during which you would see what I call a "test pattern." This meant that the station didn't actually go dark. In order to perform any work on a transmitter you must shut it down completely. The same is true for a motor vehicle when you want to refuel it. Then you must wait at least 10 minutes for any radio-frequency energy to dissipate. Refusal to do so in any such situation may result in injury.

I remember when tv actually went off the air.
HOLY #$%#!!!!!!
That was YEARS ago.
Now you can stay up ALL NIGHT watching all kinds of MINDLESS crap.
SWEET!!!!
Not until I'm on my death bed. TV is pathetic.
@@TimothyOnline no it's not.
aka infomercials
That copyright notice from 1971 at the end of the "Flag Evolution" was exactly what was seen at such end on WNEW-TV in New York throughout the 1970's. What was the company that made it, Saxton Graphic Associates, Ltd.? That's what it looks like.
I believe so. The film was also played in drive-in theatres during the fourth of July.
When WITI was TV6 (before Fox) they used this sign off every Sunday night/ early Monday morning at about 12:30 AM and then went to test pattern until about 5 AM when they played this again at sign on.
I remember this test, The white to black transitions was to test an AGC problem with our studio to transmitter link.
I think this video if from in house and not "off-air"
Mike Lambert You actually worked at that station? Cool. What was it like working there?
Cool backdrop of the building. I imagine it was taken specifically for this, with it being at night and positioned to the left to include the text.
Yes, RoachRadioTV, it is; in fact, most stations actually show infomercials between midnight-5am before coming back on the air.
cant stand informercials
holy crap... I never knew they did this anymore.. THIS brings back a TON of memories !! thanx !
I don't know why, but I love this sign off. One of my favorites.
meh
It might be because it's more historical than jingoist military-wank.
P.S. Saxton Graphic Associates was a New York-based firm that, in 1976, made a film encompassing 400 years of Long Island history in 28 minutes. That film had the same hallmarks of the graphics style used in this film.
ah,the old days of stations cutting off like this.i don't miss those days
Wow the classic "Flag Evolution" SSB
man, they had a real tough time going to sleep this night,,,
Another fun fact: The address here shown on the 5AM screen was 9001 N Green Bay Rd, Brown Deer, WI 53209, USA.
they said they were signing off the air but it looked like they were still broadcasting
There were all kinds of adjustments and corresponding tests for analog video transmitters (chrominance, luminance, etc.). They blocked off the time so would-be viewers wouldn't be tuning into seemingly mindless gobbledygook.
School's out for...EVER!
*Test tone*
TV's off for...EVER!
Wonder if Staples got billed for that ad.
I love this Station !
Can you please tell me if you can get FOX6 News in Fond Du Lac WI?
Did anybody notice in the advertisement for the alarm system? Where after he breaks the window, he still physically removes the magnetic piece from the alarm?
i ever think that can happen this in chile, much channels show tv promos in the sign off,i congratulate you,the witi fox 6 2004 signoff is the most surreal signoff period everrrr
9:23 is unmistakeably a Gari production music track.
Those colour bars are called EG 1-1990, used by the SMPTE as a test pattern.
It used to be that you could watch mindless crap anytime of the day. Now mindless crap is a rare treat.
Not that anyone cares, but their off-air tone is 404 Hz.
Love the fact that both Malaysia and US flag has red and white stripes with blue background on its star-moon/stars.
Brhett Vickery worked there, she will join WGN mid-December 2023.
@joshyboy1983 Correction: He's considered Canadian. But the reason he was shown on the SSB was because he invented the Telephone in the United States.
Is this how long the maintenance actually lasted? Or was it longer?
Fun fact: The hertz on the 5AM screen was about 401hz.
Total televised mischief at its wackiest.
before tv was on all night on every station
What is conducting transmitter maintence please?
There's nothing much to it. The television station sends data to their transmitter, wherever it is (since it's not near the station itself), and the transmitter sends the information to televisions within reach; that area is known as the station's DMA, or Designated Market Area. Usually, transmitter maintenance is nothing more than making sure everything is working properly, and that the correct data is being sent at the right time.
The 1960's SSB Audio music Used The flag evolution film in 1970's
But in Audio Version of the 1960's National anthem was cut off like WAGA Channel 5 (Fox TV affiliate stations from Atlanta Georgia) during sign on and off
well fox6 is 24/7 beacause they just fill sign offs with seinfeld
Wow classic
great signoff!!!
7:47 wow Im one noisy bandit. And this is a love call for a man half my height and twice my weight? 7:14 THATS HIM. His tone
"At this time, FOX 6 will sign off the air to conduct transmitter maintenance. We'll resume broadcasting at 5:00AM."
WTF is that? Beer vs Books? LOL!

I always thought that they should've done something w/sign-offs in "Amazon Women-"...
5:49 First Alert Alarm System (incomplete)
Much younger version (could pass as Abby Sciuto's daughter)....
O7:16 ABBEY FROM NCIS???
In Portuguese: Nesse momento, o FOX 6 encerrarà o ar para realizar manutencão do transmissor. Retomaremos a transmissao as 5 da manha.
At this time, FOX 6 will sign off the air to conduct transmitter maintenance. We'll resume broadcasting at 5 A.M.
Speaking of transmitter tests, FLNN in Lyons has one every Sunday morning from when the late movie ends until 6. Though FLNN has four multiplexed digital channels, only the main CBS channel (4.1) has such a test.
