Thank you for speaking up regarding hyped fragrances! Everyone's nose and skin chemistry are different, but still...seeing certain fragrances constantly hyped as "forever fragrances" has an impact on consumer behavior, and buying samples and decants of niche fragrances can become costly too!. I recently read that a certain well known fragrance reviewer has familial ties to BDK, Initio, and PDM, and that made me question how certain fragrances can become randomly overhyped as well. All the more reason why balanced, realistic, diverse views and opinions are welcome!

I think I know who you're talking about. I've been hearing those rumors too. I will be forever grateful to her though for introducing me to one my new FAVORITE houses, which is Vilhelm Parfumarie. She recommended Poets of Berlin, Fleur Burlesque, and Mango Skin, and honestly, I can't possibly, humanly ADORE them more than I do. They're spectacular. She also put me on to BDK's Rouge Smoking, which I am also obsessed with. So she may be really biased and I do side-eye her recs now initially until I watch several OTHER reviewers' videos on the same frags she has recommended, but she's still giving good recs all the same.

oooh boy, we actually need more videos like this. I wish people would stop being so sensitive and take everything so personal, then we would have more balanced opinions and less hype.
I actually dislike most best-sellers/hyped perfumes both designer and niche. Most of the time I have such high expectations because of the hype, but the fragrances just turn out nothing special to me. I have over 100 perfume testers and only 20 actual full bottles. That’s the reason I stopped blind-buying. Some perfumes even though nice, I actually never feel like wearing them. Some don’t work on my skin and some I simply don’t like.
Bouquet Ideale I hated the first time I tried it and now I love it. Italica is nothing special in my opinion, it doesn’t smell bad on me, it’s just ok. Lira, the same. Everyone’s skin chemistry and olfactory receptors are different. I wish people were not scared to leave “negative” reviews.

    1. Gris Charnel- wonderful for the first few minutes but the dry down is very masculine and incensey. Try Loubirouge instead.
    2. Nishane Ani- nice masculine in the beginning but for me I get banana after about 20 minutes
    3. Byredo- ok house but performance poor for the price
    4. Le Lion- I actually love this fragrance, but on a man, not me. To me quite different than Coramandel but in the same family
    5. Spirituese Double Vanille- you didn’t mention this one but the performance is so poor for a $400 bottle of perfume, that it would be ridiculous for me personally to buy this one although the juice is glorious. Maybe it is just me, but after 30 minutes there is barely any projection💐🤗💖

Its very important that we hear what fragrances don't work and why because it encourages those that have no choice but to blind buy, to do more research and search for a decant or sample before departing with their hard earned money. Great video and I haven't smelled all of the fragrances you've mentioned but some of them yes, especially Ani and oud for greatness(so masculine/ weak silage), the weakest performances from a niche houses that I've experienced in a while, so glad that I sampled both. I rarely blind buy now, it's not worth the money & risk. Hyped up fragrances that don't measure up: Ani, most kayali except vanilla royale, good girl, lost cherry, love don't be shy(horrid/ rank odor), SDV, Angelique Noire, delina, xerjoff lira

For me, Italica stays exactly the same in the dry down and it's as beautiful as it was with the initial spray. I believe that the hype from other reviewers is genuine because ever since I got Italica all I crave is that perfume - I find it to be so gorgeous! So I think it's just body chemistry again that makes it go wrong for some people. I do have a similar experience with Angels' Share though - I loooove the initial scent but then on me it dries down into something disgusting that I don't think many people experience that based on how much it's hyped 😂

Totally agree with you about Oud for Greatness, I find it so masculine and nothing out of this world to my nose. I do however love and wear Side Effect. I am not at all surprised that you don't like Coromandel as it is very patchouli heavy. I am also not a fan of Nishane Ani it's okay but not a wow for me - I much prefer Material from Amouage by Cecile. However I absolutely adore Portrait of a Lady and it is probably the one fragrance I would grab if my house went on fire! So interesting to hear your views and it just goes to show how subjective fragrance tastes are. Really loved this video great to know I am not the only one who doesn't care for certain hyped fragrances!

I also blind bought ylang in gold because in theory this would be 100 procent my jam. But on me it’s smells so weird and powdery…. I tried it many many times hoping I would change my opinion but unfortunately :(
And totally agree with Xerjoff… got a tester and it smelled like old wet flowers on me…
On the other end… Portrait of a lady, oud for greatness and side effect are my most worn fragrances… I love them so much.
But luckily every ones taste is different because the world would be a very place if we would like exactly the same.
    Love your reviews!!!

I love the honesty and the explanations. We all like what we like and don't like what we don't. The whole masculine thing is so much how I feel about Chloe Nomade. I do not understand the hype around it. To me it is so masculine and so screechy. I love Initio's Atomic Rose and when I heard Lattafa has a dupe for it - I am on it.

I agree with you Paulina about Bouquet Ideale, it is a very watered down version of Kalemat Black by Arabian Oud. You should try it. It's definitely one of my top ten. In regards to Oud For Greatness, you should try Liwa by Widian. It's a more feminine version of Oud For Greatness with a Baccarat Rouge 540 drydown. Liwa is like the older sister of Baccarat Rouge 540. And most of the fragances you've mentioned, yes the hype is all it was.

Compared to Gypsy Water and other Byredo scents like Mojave Ghost or Blanche, Bal d’Afrique has actually eternal longevity lol(for a light, freshie)
I didn’t go mad over it at first sniff either
But later on with testing and testing it really grew on me… I combined it with soft body lotions or deodorants and it was insanely good
It literally smells of bubbly soap after a bath/shower when ur getting ready to go to an “outdoor night ball” at a beach in some tropical exotic place like Bali or the Caribbean having the time of ur life smelling fresh and soapy like ur own skin … dressed in white with soft curls…. It’s just to die for😍
For me, it’s like this scent offers that little something that is missing from the freshness/soapiness of Dior’s pure poison…. Pure poison is like the salty version of soapiness… whereas Bal d’Afrique is more delicate n sweet almost like refreshing sweetwaters of a lake or a flowing river
It’s amazing and truly irresistible. I get the price being too much but scent-wise…. it’s nothing but a gem💎

Hey Paulina! Love this video and just so you know, you can buy Ariana grande REM, and boom you have Gris charnel. I wore one on each wrist and compared and on my skin, they smell exactly the same!
Also, I love gourmands too and italica is just not it! You know the wax melts yankee candle has (tarts I think), there are several that are holiday scents like home for the holidays, Christmas Eve etc? Italica literally smells like a candle or these yankee candle wax melts. It has such a potpourri vibe that I just couldn’t do it. I think the bug spray reference your talking about it the potpourri vibes I’m getting. I wore it for about an hour and actually rinsed it off, thank god I just bought a sample! You are not alone! I literally just received my first ever niche decants and Casamorati Italica was love at first scent. But when I put it on, although I did absolutely love the dry down as well, maybe about 2-3 hrs later, I got a headache. I’m going to have to try it on my skin again to make sure that the headache was from the perfume. If I get another headache, I’ll know that I cannot purchase a full bottle of Italica despite how much I adore it. But to test them, I’m smelling each one on test trip first, then devoting an entire day to having each new fragrance on my skin and jotting down my notes for how They are wearing on me and all the other stuff. If I’m going to spend this amount of money for a few of these beautiful niche perfumes, I’m going to make sure that I am buying ones that I won’t regret. Or at least prevent regret as much as I possibly can. This is a book and I apologize, but in case you’re interested, my favorite houses so far seem to be amouage and xerjoff. It just seems like everything I smell from both of them is blowing me away.

Hi beauty!! Most of the time I have the same tastes as you, like 95% (the 5% are perfumes like Gris Charnel and Bal d'Afrique which I ADORE (I can agree with your opinion on Bal d'Afrique the lasting power is not the best and it's quite simple but there's something in it that makes me love). I think you don't like bouquet idéale because it's almost a dupe for Raghba which you don't like from what I remember. I like Bouquet Idéale but it's not a love for me, not worth buying a full bottle considering the price. Maybe I'll go for a 30ml bottle!! For the Italica problem that you have, I have the same problem. On my clothes, very pretty perfume... But on my skin it turns into a weird sweet rotten thing which make me want to vomit. I also HATE Coromandel and Le Lion from Chanel 😂😂 I'm sure it's a beautiful perfume for most of the world but I smell the old pee Shalimarish thing like you 😂😂 don't like Intoxicated either. And Portrait of a Lady smell like a bad rose perfume for old lady... For Oud for Greatness and Side effect I was dying to try them but with your reviews I'm going to purchases samples before buying them because I don't want to make a mistake, same thing with Ani 😂 Wish you'll see my comment, sending you much love from France!! Love you beautiful ❤️❤️❤️

Fragrance is relative & personal. Too many people are on the hype train so I do agree with some of your opinions. For instance, on me I only love portrait of a lady on a blistering cold day dressed up. I do love ani , it reminds me of Dior addict and for more nostalgic reasons. It’s hard to rate fragrances because it’s just diff for everyone. Fragrance reviews for me are just a guide and intro to what I may or may not like. The juice to most fragrances are like 6-8$ to make. It’s the mass production & packaging that brings the cost up to $$$…

I don’t get how they call Ani a gourmand, on me it’s very green very ginger. Italica I do love however. When I first sprayed it I hated it but I love the dry down on me. I also really enjoyed side effect. People just have different chemistry and fragrances develop differently on each person.

Ylang in Gold didn’t work for me either. I much prefer Note Vanillée from Micallef.

I agree with Nishane Ani. At first I sprayed it and couldn't get over how spicy and masculine it was. But ... a little got onto my coat sleeve, and when I wore the coat the next day I kept smelling a really nice smooth benzoin scent! Amazing longevity, and the dry down is very nice, but I really don't see it as a vanilla scent at all. it’s always different on people. scent is personal. everyone has different journey.. that’s why sometimes what is special and mind blowing to you is not on others and vice versa. for example I love Ani and Portrayal woman and Lalibela and they will always be in my collection FOREVER. I love Side Effect and Gris Charnel too for specific purposes and occasion but I’m ok if I don’t own them forever and if I can find a more affordable similar perfume to them. the other scents are like either meh or not mind blowing to me or just ok.. it’s always different. also before, I didn’t like chanel no.5 but then after a decade I became matured woman and a mom of two, I just suddenly appreciate chanel no.5 and have it in my collection. but im ok too if i don’t own it forever… so our noses and taste always evolve and you never know you might rediscover a once hated scent and turn it into love… ❤️

For the most part we agree! I don't like the drydown of Italica on me, as well. Italica dries down sickly sweet and just bad, made me nauseated. I also do not smell good in Oud for Greatness, and although I wear some "masculine" fragrances it smells super manly on me, but I can pull off Side Effect. I don't get the hype on Oud for Greatness, though. I am not a Chanel woman, either, but I do like Coromandel. I agree about Byredo, too. I don't get it about Bal D'Afrique, either. I do love Gypsy Water but I got so frustrated with the longevity and bought the Alexandria dupe because it lasts longer. Try the Alexendria dupe! I can't see spending my cash on either Byredo or Jo Malone because they don't last. But the one I disagree with you: I LOVE Ani! The drydown on Ani is such a beautiful vanilla on me, and Ani is in my top 5.
