    As long as you noticed the location of the zip ties changed due to a small error but he did correct it just didn't show it. Otherwise a very good brief instructional video. Keep up the good work!

    Subscribed. I just did my heater core ( bragging rights ) and when I went to start my car this morning, I decided to inspect the car before I left. Found oil leaking from the head and a puddle underneath it and about 70% of other symptoms suggesting a blown head gasket. Looks like a head problem and I'm hoping its not warped as I didn't let it warm up or drove it. This video is going to save me a lot of money. Thanks for making this man. Definitely going to tackle this real soon.

      Sorry to hear about the oil leak. I hope it's not the gasket, but if it is, no worries, with this video and your knowledge I'm sure you can handle it. I look forward to your "braggin rights." Cheers

      It’s about 4 hours. The manual skips around a bit. The video demonstrates the process in order , tips and the needed tools (especially the special head bolt tool). I recommend downloading the manual, gathering the tools and make a go at it. Bmw makes everything look hard but it’s not bad once you get in it. Good luck.

      Bro , Your video is big inspiration to many of us who cant afford thousands of dollars .. Seriously without someone showing a video such as this , alot of us would think that we would need speical tools , or with so much on the Internet ,,, that you would have to change this or that.. you made it easy ... one Question, Once I take the cylinder tool and place it on the top to hold it from moving. You had used like vise grips to turn the cam. Was this just used to be able to clean the valves . ????

    • @mechanicmaven2346
      @mechanicmaven2346  Před 9 lety +1

      William Coffman Yes, I used the vice grips to turn the cams for cleaning and repositioning when installing the head. Really, you can do it. I have a desk job, but I like to tinker, It was challenge but I figured I could do it, and I did, so can you. I suggest taking your time, take pictures, label parts as you remove, lay the parts out in an organized manner and you'll be able to put it all back together. I only cleaned the head, no valve job. From what I've heard from bmw mechanics, tolerances are close from the factory, don't do a valve job or shave the head unless it's bad, and in case of a bad head, try to find a good used head. Rebuild heads never run or sound the same.

      No, I did not doing anything to the valves or shave the head. I do not advice doing any modification to bmw heads. They never run the same. If you have a cracked head that needs repair your better off finding a good used head.

    Maven remove BMW E36 M44 head in 15 minutes and 25 second by CZcams clock. He is a bad man! "Great Video!!" My 2 cents I would check vacuum leeks on the intake before remove. If no vacuum leek I would have take the head out with the intake connected it would save time and intake gasket, overall Great Video!!

I think the engine is very similar, but 8 valve, so should be a little easier with a single camshaft - still debating whether I can face this or pay a shop - never thought of the tie wraps for the timing chain - great idea!

    • @mechanicmaven2346
      @mechanicmaven2346  Před 8 lety +2

      +Ryosuke324
      Before you put the head back on the block, remove the block timing tool and turn the crank until all pistons are down. This is done to allow open valves (the head usually get out of time when removed for clean etc.) in the head to clear pistons when re-installing the head. Put the head back on block, install head cam timing tool, then rotate crank and re-install block timing tool. You should only have to rotate the crank a quarter of a turn to position pistons low enough to clear any open valves. Hope this helps. Good look!

    Even though it was a speed up for CZcams, how long do you think this took you? I'm a BMW fanatic and I have never worked on or owned one with a 4 cylinder variant. I know with my e36 with the m52 it took quite a bit of work. For some reason on my particular example it took longer than the 4.4l v8 that I did in a 740i (stubborn bolts fasteners). But anyways I'd be curious, I'm looking at buying a 318ti soon with a blown head gasket. Thanks man, one bmw enthusiast to another.

    • @mechanicmaven2346
      @mechanicmaven2346  Před 9 lety +1

      The m44 is much easier to work on than the M52. For one thing the 4banger doesn't have Vanos, so if you zip tie the chain, timing is a snap. 2nd, it's a 4 cylinder where a 6 normally goes, which means there is more room to work. A little wisdom, if something is in the way, remove it, don't waste time trying to work around a problem. German engineers put it there for a reason, remove it. MOST IMPORTANT TIP FOR ALL BMW HEADS. Don't do a valve job on your head. If it's cracked find a good used one. If the head is milled use a cometic gasket to raise the deck height back to stock. But Never get a Valve job. For some reason BMW don't run the same after a valve job. Just my humble opinion.

    • @vistadrummer09
      @vistadrummer09 Před 9 lety

      Mechanic Maven Thanks man. I appreciate the wisdom. I echo the thoughts about the heads. To get to it to spec again and running great I think you'd have to spend more than buying a quality rebuilt head or using a used one. Let someone else do it, the labor alone will kill your budget (if you value your time and factor that in). I bought the car, it's running rough which I believe is the icv. It also won't shift into gear when cold but I'm checking the fluids in the manual tranny. It's a 1998. I paid 300 bucks for it and the rest of it is mint no rust no paint body damage. The "kid" I bought it off from got scared of the "millions of electrical issues BMW's are known for" and bit off too much. Plus his parents are making him selling it. Big loss for him amazing deal for me, even if the tranny or engine blows still great deal.

      Greg Gagne 300? Wow that IS a great deal..

    • @vistadrummer09
      @vistadrummer09 Před 9 lety +1

      Yep it was. I've since thrown $1200 in genuine bmw parts into it to do it right but I now have an awesome daily driver. It needs a repaint as the po was an idiot in that regard placing these tacky "carbon fiber" body kit pieces on it. But I just got my paint gun setup so it should be good. I also picked up for $400 recently a 1995 hellrot red clubsport in similar condition. The guy was going to bring it to the junkyard after being an idiot with it. He told me it wouldn't drive at all but the motor was good. Come to find the diff drain plug had been way over tightened and stripped the threads. The plug fell out and the fluid drained all out. He drove it for a while like that and burned the diff out. It needs a total rebuild but I couldn't let a piece of history / cool car be trashed. Honestly if I struck it rich I would be putting complete wrecks on the road instead of my current job.

    • @skullkid73
      @skullkid73 Před 9 lety +1

      Greg Gagne Well if you'd got the room to store it, and patience, you can keep restoring all you want. Here I am saving to have a '94 318is running back to reliable condition. I'm guessing the previous owner let the broken gasket seal cause a few more issues...
