This is very convincing and helpful review. You're showing real life example, much better than exporting files or importing, when it's a matter of waiting. This demo clearly shows tangible benefits of having 32GB. Thank you for this.
Totally agree. During im- or export I have a coffee and don't care about a minute up or down. But in editing I want it smooth, and even half a second delay is annoying.

It it true but Import and Export does give a few metric to consider, how fast the RAW CPU Power is, and how the thermo envelop of the chip and chassis performance is, will the fan kick on and how loud. And if I need to edit in LRC quick, how much faster can difference machine render the preview. This is why I do the review for both because it give a more wholistic picture!
This is the BEST review of the M1 Pro in the entire youtube. No one talks about heavy Photoshop files and those are often the norms in real world work flow. Some of my composite files are as large as 15GB which are very close to your benchmark. 64GB definitely helps. I hate when some people pull up a lightroom bench with only a few images and test the export time then call it real world. Really appreciate your time making this review.
Only if you need this kind of stuff , many don’t and this video is almost useless if you use Resolve to do lots of your pay work. Maybe you are too centered on your own needs. He is one of the best and his videos cover areas that others don’t, but many people don’t do large composites in Lightroom for example.
@@jaimeduncan6167 Laptop and mobile phone is considered personal device. That's why it centers on the user's needs. If Resolve is your money making machine, you'd better look else where for the benchmark. I see what I like and leave a comment to encourage the content creator. I work with large files on a daily basis and it grinds my gears when I see lots of people treat the unified memory as if it's made of unicorn fart or something magical. "You only need 16GB" and "don't waste your money" types of video aren't telling the truth at all.

My issue was with the idea that the other reviews were basically useless, they are not, they are simple testing other stuff, different uses. I don't do Panoramas for example, but I will never call his comprehensive panorama testing useless: I will call it fantastic, useful, important, real world, even key. I know my needs are not the same as the needs of others.

In my daily work, I rarely see file sizes smaller than 3-4GB and I let Photoshop / Illustrator used up to 12 GB of RAM per app with 250 steps of undo history while having Final Cut open. That's why when I started to tax the system, the 32GB choked really hard. I guess the definition of Pros varies a lot. I don't see opening 6 Raws 42MP files in Photoshop and leave them there a proper test (you know who I refer to). My average photo editing on Photoshop consists of at least 60-70 layers and that will eat up your RAM fast. In short, I think it all depends on the work load and real Pros will know exactly how much RAM their apps are using and leave a bit of a buffer for future usage.
Finally a channel that doesn't just issue judgement on just import and export speeds, like that's all we ever do in Lightroom. Excellent information thank you. I'm looking forward to upgrading my M1 mini in the near future.

@@ArtIsRight maybe it does but most people don’t import and export 1000s of images at a time so don’t really care if the import is done 30s quicker. What we really want to know is how it performs when editing. The M1 was reviewed with a great amount of hype and to be honest, I’ve been extremely underwhelmed. Lots of lag when zooming in and out, beach balls when doing complex edits with a lot of local adjustment layers. Throw PS into the mix with a number of layers and the memory maxes out pretty quickly.
I know that is what I have been saying about the M1 for Pro this whole time. And yes you might now do 1000+ import or export but I do and I know that many other wedding / events / real estate photographs do. So these test are a wholistic approach to testing. You may not deal with large files quantity but others so I am covering both. But the issues exhibit in M1 is true. The point is that it is not a pro processor but there are many others who paint it that way, I never did. Either way appreciate your feed back.
I've been thinking the same thing watching all of these reviews. Yes, exporting images takes time, as does rendering video. But it's also the point in the editing processes where you've done all the hard work and can just walk away and do pretty much anything else while it's happening.
I want to add myself to the list of others who greatly appreciate your technical tests. They are super extensive and go farther in testing real world Lightroom Classic actions. Some other sites only test Lightroom exporting which does not really stress the machine. Based on your video, I will be going with a 32GB MacBook Pro 14”. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
The more of your videos I watch, the more you assure me about the configuration I ordered: 16 inch M1 pro , 10/16 cores, 32GB, 2TB. Since I'm a graphic designer with Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator being my main programs and doing some music with larger sample libraries on the side, it seems I made the right choice. For me I would have gone with the 14 10/14 16 for graphic design but the screen is way too small for me. I went with the 16 10/16 16GB 1TB instead. Great machines but maybe somewhat of an overkill.
Thank you. Finally someone speaks the truth and provide real use case. There is also a huge benefit with more rams is that the swap disk is less used and will provide better lifespan for the SSD. I personally went for the 64GB ram version because I see it as better value and more future proof so without the needs to upgrade for many years to come.

As the previous commentators have already written, this is literally the best comparison on CZcams. You are comparing the MacBook Pros with only one program running and not like other CZcamsrs with the maximum of opened Programs. For me it was clear that I will go for a 16" MacBook Pro because of the larger screen area, with an 1TB SSD, but I was not sure if 16 GB of RAM will be enough for me or if I should upgrade to 32 GB. Your video showed me that I should go for the 32 GB variant. Thank you.

Thank you for this!!! I watched so many videos saying I should save money because the 16GB performance is so good - and while it's true, if you are a heavy Adobe user you'll be glad you have the 32GB. I bought the 16 and returned it after a week for the 32 because with the 16 I was in constant yellow memory pressure using 5+GB of swap. While it was able to switch around and run far more smoothly than my previous Intel MacBook Pro, the machine was still compensating because I was out of memory, and I did get a few small hangups in the first week of use on medium sized projects. This was the only video I found that really shows how 32 benefits you in Adobe apps - and I'm so glad I upgraded.

On launch day, I ordered a 14” 10 CPU/14 GPU (so just bumped up one level in CPU and GPU) w/ 32 GB RAM. To hedge my bets, I also went and got the base 14” at Best Buy and used it for a week. While it was still very quick and I never really pushed it to the limit in Photoshop and Illustrator, I could tell the medium load I was running was inching towards the full RAM capacity. So I went ahead and returned the base model and sticking with the upgraded one. Yes, it’s $650 more, but if you can swing it, to me, it gives the AWESOME (not just great) performance you’re looking for….
I dont know how many macbook pro videos I've watched since launch - but this is the most informative and best one I've seen. This video alone helps me make my decision.
Without having seen your video I just ordered a MBP 14 with the top-of-the-line Pro-Processor and 32 Gig RAM. My cameras are a Leica SL2 and a Leica Q2. Both produce RAW (DNG)-Files with around 85 Megs each. After having watched your excellent video I am relieved that I choose 32 Gigs of RAM just by instinct. Thx a lot.
Wow ... fully convinced me. I was bummed that I have to wait 3 weeks for this "custom" 32gb RAM MBP to come in, but it'll be worth it to avoid the frustration of the dreaded slowdown in Lightroom editing.
Thank you for this insightful review. I am a photographer that uses multiple programs to edit my images. Lightroom classic, Photoshop, ON1 and DXO Pure Raw opened at the same time. I have just purchased the base model 14inch with 32 gigs of ram. This is going to make my editing much more faster now.
Your review had me checking LR performance on my desktop and my MacBook Pro M2 14 inch with 12 cores/16G RAM/1TB SSD. I was honestly quite shocked that just reading say my 6500 photos from 2013 would be such hard work for the CPU, they really spooled up, as I scrolled and the thumbnails were being generated from the RAW images. The difference though was that the desktop which is a i7-5820K CPU with 32G RAM made it look easier I would say quicker than the MBP which quickly maxxed out the cores while the desktop just cruised through with 50% or so on the cores. The desktop also has liquid cooling which helps, the CPU temps don't rise very much. LR offers software for both the macos and Windows so it is easy to switch back and forth as I wish. It also has an MSI RTX2060 card in it. The desktop made me realise, that mighty though my MBP is, the desktop is better where real performance is needed. Portability and peformance per Watt is the strength of the MBP. I only upgraded the RAM on the desktop a week ago and it cost $130 AUD which is less than $100USD compared to $700AUD to do the same upgrade on a MBP. The use of very large panoramic images is not something I would do so I doubt I need 32G on the MBP. Your video though is excellent and it did make me think...I did learn something from it.

Now I can't want for the machine to ship.... my 8GB machine is struggling. This really eased my mind that I did make a decision that will work for me

I am working on that video. And I would say that unless you really can push it, there's not going to be much difference. Also RAM in previous Mac systems vs now is a bit different as well. macOS manages it much more efficiently now and it is a lot faster than Mac from the yesteryear. :)
You’ve reluctantly made me realize that 32 gig ram for my new M1 MacBook Pro is required as large panoramas are pretty common for me. Oh well, better to know now than order the wrong configuration and regret it so thank you.
Well you convinced me to return the 16gb model i just ordered and buy the 32gb model that’s currently 5-6 weeks out. I appreciate this thorough review because everyone on youtube said 16gb was more than enough. My 2015 macbook pro does exactly the same thing you showed on the 16gb it just can’t keep up with a lot of layers and adjustments.
No, the issue is that in synthetic or straight forward benchmark without a deep dive test, you won't see these things happening. So I am glad that you'll have what fit your workflow best.

thank you for this video. I ordered a 14" M1Pro with an upgrade in the processor and 32 GB of RAM. So if there was any remorse at the extra expense it is definitely erased by this video!
If your budget is tight and you can only upgrade one thing, 16 GB or fewer cores can still complete any task, perhaps slower , but if you run out of drive space (if traveling, for example) you are stuck.
Yes, RAM, GPU cores matters very little. Reverse logic, you cannot expand RAM, but you can always carry extra SSDs or drives when you travel. CPU/GPU cores slightly slower sure, but RAM, if the apps need it, it needs it.

I was skeptical at first and placed order on 16GB model. After see this video multiple times, decided to cancel my order and changed my config to 32GB. It simply one of the wise decision I ever made. Editing in C1 alone and the RAM usage already reached 22GB. 32GB can handle pictures from A7RIV perfectly.

THANK YOU! Whatever further optimisation for unified memory will be done, RAM still matters even with insanely fast SSDs for swap. I’d also add: it is not atypical to use LR / C1 and Photoshop open all at once with Chrome and some other stuff in the background. Slowdowns and beachballs on the 16GB felt painful just watching, and I know of images where my current 32GB on my intel drove me to the point I wanted to stop working on a given image. These new macbooks are so impressive overall, and other reviews had me seriously question whether I’d need 32GB RAM. Now I know I do (I thought simply using the money for 2TB would be the way to go…) Thank you so much for your videos, they are absolute gold.
You're welcome! And RAM to SSD swap are fast not but if you compare even on the midline M1 Pro it goes up to 200 GB/s, the read and write on the SSD is about 5 GB/s so you are talking something that is 40 times slower when it has to swap.

I use the base model MBA M1 (256GB SSD+8GB RAM) and it kinda slows down in LR when browsing through a lot of RAW images and starts to choke when I use masks (which I use a lot). Great demonstration on the importance of Ram when using Lightroom. Amazing that 32gb ram can make that adjustment without stuttering. As I mentioned in previous comments I got the 16" MBP with 64GB ram, but it seems like 32gb would work fine for my A7RIV panorama's and photoshop work. I should get my MPB by the end of November and I look forward to reworking some larger projects to see the improvement.
If you got the 64 GB with the Max there are some surprises that you will find when working with large files in Lightroom Classic and PS. However, there are also areas where it is just ok as well. But I have speculation as to why and support for my thoughts coming up in a video soon. But for what you do, you will love it!

Hi Lucy, I am gathering data right now and a video on this will come out Monday. But what I can tell you right now is that more RAM does speed up Photoshop and LR Pano Merge by more than 50% so if your workflow involves large files and you are going to keep the machine for a long time get the 64 GB.
How long do you keep your laptops and cameras for? With the small extra cost of the added ram that you can’t add later I think it’s worth the better user experience to stay with 64.

I've heard that the SSD 1TB have faster rad and write speeds than the 512 models, i would be interested in seeing a base model with 16gigs of ram but with an upgraded ssd performance. Great video, i have the base model 14 inch stock model and it fits my needs but these videos are truely helpful for others.
OMG! Great video. I should have watched this before I ordered my 14" Mac Book Pro about 4 hours ago. Luckily I ordered the 10 core, 32GB ram and 1TB SSD. Whew! I use LR a lot and PS somewhat. And yes, I sometimes also keep my Safari open along w/my Mail. Just bought a Canon R5 w/45mp sensor. So I need the speed.

So glad these videos (as well as Tech Chap and MaxTech) came out which stopped me from going Max 24/32 and instead went to Pro 16/32 (2TB). Didn’t really save me money but it gained me battery life, swap, heat and fan noise.
Between the M1 Pro and M1 Max 14 & 16" Models the battery life gained / loss is marginal. Swap is related to RAM function and at least 32 is good depending on the tasks. As far as heat they are comparable much better than the Intel so anything is a gain really. Fan noise if you want minimal go with 16" more room for thermal.
This video is extraordinarily helpful to. me. My Lightroom and Photoshop processing isn't generally as sophisticated as your examples, but I've hit lags in PS especially when the number of layers has multiplied. I'm going to trade in my M1 mini for a new MBP with the M1 Pro chip. Now for sure it will have 32GB RAM and a 1TB internal drive. I may get also upgrade the CPU and GPU cores too. This demo has helped me prioritize these decisions.Thank you!

did you go for the m1 pro or max? It's just crazy how they give you a better deal once you buy more, they price these upgrades so cleverly...250 cdn more to get the max, which increases gpu power by 1/3....I mean what am I doing that's gunna use that gpu though lol.
Thanks very much -- this makes me feel much more comfortable with the configuration I paid extra for (10 core/16 core GPU; 32 GB, 1 TB). And it's so much more real-world than other reviews, which rely on canned speed-test apps.
When M1 came out last year I decided to go easy and got 8 core Air with 8Gb of RAM. While it's fine for LR classic (my biggest files are Leica Q2 90BM files) it's not sufficient to smoothly run Capture One 21, even the version with M1 support. It was running just fine on my XPS 15 I7/32MB but not on M1 Air. The main issue is lagginess even in simple operations like changing exposure or displaying/hiding mask. It's laggy. Other people reported no issues but they usually have 16GB of RAM. It's still fine for me as Air was my 'test drive' and I was still going to get the 16" given it's coming with SD card slot. Now it's here and I am leaning towards 10/16 core with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I think I will skip 14" due to lower battery size.
Good choice and I agree with you about the M1 Air statement. The good and bad part about the M1 air is that there's no fan. So in heavy task the computer would thermo throttle down by quite a bit.
A good real world example of how 32 gig of ram is more efficient in relation to photo editing. Bench marks can be useful, but it's good to see it in terns of application use. My Mac Book Pro from 2013 has served me well, but it is now time to upgrade. Finally we have a Mac Book Pro worthy of spending money on.
Well done. Finally a review that is a "real life" example and isn't just comparing benchmarks. I'm a long term Windows laptop user and very seriously considering a move to the new MacBook Pro. I have found LRC performance to be an issue, particularly for HDR merged images; I often use 5 images with up to +/- 2EV. I would be interested in your perspective on 16GB vs 32GB for this scenario.
For HDR merge that is not an issue at all, the machine are much faster than the intel counter part. As far as 16 vs 32 GB, it does not make too much of a difference, but if you are a multitasker or work with large files then I would go with a minimum of 32 GB. Or spring for the 64, which can speed up some task but I think overall it is overkill for many.
@@ArtIsRight Thank you. I have found HDR merge is (frustratingly) slow on my 16GB Intel laptop so it sounds like I will see a significant improvement with the MB Pro. Sounds like I am like you in terms of being a multi-tasker. I suspect my current LRC issues are more because I have too many other things clogging up RAM.
HDR merge on intel machine or on the M1 yes but on these as you can see in my graph they are super fast. Also this is the reason why you should get more RAM but as I found out HDR merges uses more CPU than RAM on the system.
The swap happens well below the threshold, and yeah, that's a wear on the SSD. I'm thinking 64Gb too for future proofing. If this is my main PC, then I'd plan to have it longer term.

I hate beach balls and that's a big reason I'm trading my 2019 16". It was laggy using brushes with larger files. Glad to see my new machine won't be!

How will be the performance for merging HDR RAW files taken by Sony A7iii and working with dng file size each 160mb plus. I work on around 60 files in every catalog. Will be lagfree workflow? Ordered configuration is 16” M1 pro- 10 cpu 16 gpu with 32gb memory and 512 SSD.
HDR merge is really fast on these machines. And your RAW from Sony A7III are not too big. Yes the final DNG is large but these computer will go through it like cutting through butter. Overall, they are really great SOC
good demo 👍 many other reviews on youtube only compared the speed of exporting images in Lightroom for 16GB and 32GB RAM (and many other softwares / benchmarks) and concluded that there was no significant difference and it was not recommended to spend extra US$400 to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB RAM… although not many people will need to edit 192.3MP image everyday.
No but remember too that most of these benchmark were ran with just the test program open. Start multitasking in real life and 16 GB falls apart quickly. Also as Photographers sometime we use LRC and PS at the same time, now you are competing for RAM not to mention web browsers and tabs. ;)

Yes most programs are not as demanding as pro app, I am referring to Pro Apps here such as LRC, LR, PS, C1, FCP, etc. And many of these such as LRC, PS can be memory demanding. So when running them simultaneously, you need more RAM but at the end of the day, some will take this advice and others will choose to follow others guide and go with 16GB. And that is ok too. For me I know what I stand for and what I do. Each photographer needs are different, for me I do large file but this might not be for everyone. What I am show is no entirely out of the scope of possibility. I'm not photographing 100 MP camera or anything like that. These are the common D850, D810 that many photographers own. Cheers.

Yeah you can totally use 16 GB on those, but if you start to have multiple programs open and running in the background then the computer would start to swap the RAM to SSD and that is where the slow down happens. But if you don't mind that they you are ok. Don't let me tell you otherwise. I am recommending the optimal configuration, but only you know how you use your computer and your workflow best.
Nice to see real-world benefits of more RAM - was there ever any doubt?! I'm curious though about 64GB... Don't you wonder how much more benefit even more RAM could provide? Especially when running Chrome with multiple tabs, and plenty of other multi-tasking in the background? That's the real question for me.
There was doubt for some. And a lot of misconception about Unified memory. 64 GB does show benefit in some area but it is not as unilateral as one would expect like in previous generation system. Also I shall do a chrome test at some point
Hello. I tried doing the same with a 200 megapixel dng extension photo. This is my device : MBP 16'' M2 PRO 12CPU 19GPU 16GB 1TB.. As you show in the video, there is no stuttering or freezing. If you move it too fast, there is some stuttering. But never enough to be an hourglass.. Even if I did it very fast, the hourglass never came off. Systems and programs can be developed in 1 year.. I have immense respect for their hard work. Continue !!! Mine is an update after 1 year..
Seems to be that the 14 inch MBP with 32GB Ram with the 8-core is a better bang for the bucks than the 16-inch despite having 10-core. That's all I need to know. Thanks!
I haven’t watched the video but I can definitely say that I think 32GB of ram is the sweet spot. I have a base MacBook Pro 14 inch, and while it doesn’t give me any problems, the 16GB of ram maxes out quickly when you’re using light room and photoshop at the same time. It starts, at least on my MacBook, to use swap memory. I could care less about my MacBook using swap because I upgraded from a mid 2015 15’ MacBook Pro 256 GB and it used swap memory all the time. I just upgraded to the new M1 pro MacBook. Therefore, if my old 2015 intel MacBook lasted this long without failure then that’s the least of my worries. 16GB will work just fine but, in my opinion, 32GB is better. Photoshop is just greedy for ram. I have no problem editing photos or 4K videos on the base model. Handles it like a champ. 4K is the highest resolution that I use. I edit video and pics from my Sony A7iii, DJI MAVIC 2 pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max with no problems.
This is very convincing and helpful review. You're showing real life example, much better than exporting files or importing, when it's a matter of waiting. This demo clearly shows tangible benefits of having 32GB. Thank you for this.
Totally agree. During im- or export I have a coffee and don't care about a minute up or down. But in editing I want it smooth, and even half a second delay is annoying.

And if I need to edit in LRC quick, how much faster can difference machine render the preview. This is why I do the review for both because it give a more wholistic picture!

This is the BEST review of the M1 Pro in the entire youtube. No one talks about heavy Photoshop files and those are often the norms in real world work flow. Some of my composite files are as large as 15GB which are very close to your benchmark. 64GB definitely helps.
I hate when some people pull up a lightroom bench with only a few images and test the export time then call it real world.

Only if you need this kind of stuff , many don’t and this video is almost useless if you use Resolve to do lots of your pay work. Maybe you are too centered on your own needs. He is one of the best and his videos cover areas that others don’t, but many people don’t do large composites in Lightroom for example.

If Resolve is your money making machine, you'd better look else where for the benchmark. I see what I like and leave a comment to encourage the content creator.
I work with large files on a daily basis and it grinds my gears when I see lots of people treat the unified memory as if it's made of unicorn fart or something magical. "You only need 16GB" and "don't waste your money" types of video aren't telling the truth at all.

My issue was with the idea that the other reviews were basically useless, they are not, they are simple testing other stuff, different uses. I don't do Panoramas for example, but I will never call his comprehensive panorama testing useless: I will call it fantastic, useful, important, real world, even key. I know my needs are not the same as the needs of others.

In my daily work, I rarely see file sizes smaller than 3-4GB and I let Photoshop / Illustrator used up to 12 GB of RAM per app with 250 steps of undo history while having Final Cut open. That's why when I started to tax the system, the 32GB choked really hard.
I guess the definition of Pros varies a lot.
I don't see opening 6 Raws 42MP files in Photoshop and leave them there a proper test (you know who I refer to). My average photo editing on Photoshop consists of at least 60-70 layers and that will eat up your RAM fast.
In short, I think it all depends on the work load and real Pros will know exactly how much RAM their apps are using and leave a bit of a buffer for future usage.
Finally someone that knows what they are doing.

@@ArtIsRight maybe it does but most people don’t import and export 1000s of images at a time so don’t really care if the import is done 30s quicker. What we really want to know is how it performs when editing. The M1 was reviewed with a great amount of hype and to be honest, I’ve been extremely underwhelmed. Lots of lag when zooming in and out, beach balls when doing complex edits with a lot of local adjustment layers. Throw PS into the mix with a number of layers and the memory maxes out pretty quickly.
I know that is what I have been saying about the M1 for Pro this whole time. And yes you might now do 1000+ import or export but I do and I know that many other wedding / events / real estate photographs do. So these test are a wholistic approach to testing. You may not deal with large files quantity but others so I am covering both. But the issues exhibit in M1 is true. The point is that it is not a pro processor but there are many others who paint it that way, I never did. Either way appreciate your feed back.
I've been thinking the same thing watching all of these reviews. Yes, exporting images takes time, as does rendering video. But it's also the point in the editing processes where you've done all the hard work and can just walk away and do pretty much anything else while it's happening.
I want to add myself to the list of others who greatly appreciate your technical tests. They are super extensive and go farther in testing real world Lightroom Classic actions. Some other sites only test Lightroom exporting which does not really stress the machine. Based on your video, I will be going with a 32GB MacBook Pro 14”. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

For me I would have gone with the 14 10/14 16 for graphic design but the screen is way too small for me. I went with the 16 10/16 16GB 1TB instead. Great machines but maybe somewhat of an overkill.

Thank you. Finally someone speaks the truth and provide real use case. There is also a huge benefit with more rams is that the swap disk is less used and will provide better lifespan for the SSD. I personally went for the 64GB ram version because I see it as better value and more future proof so without the needs to upgrade for many years to come.

As the previous commentators have already written, this is literally the best comparison on CZcams. You are comparing the MacBook Pros with only one program running and not like other CZcamsrs with the maximum of opened Programs.
For me it was clear that I will go for a 16" MacBook Pro because of the larger screen area, with an 1TB SSD, but I was not sure if 16 GB of RAM will be enough for me or if I should upgrade to 32 GB.

I watched so many videos saying I should save money because the 16GB performance is so good - and while it's true, if you are a heavy Adobe user you'll be glad you have the 32GB. I bought the 16 and returned it after a week for the 32 because with the 16 I was in constant yellow memory pressure using 5+GB of swap. While it was able to switch around and run far more smoothly than my previous Intel MacBook Pro, the machine was still compensating because I was out of memory, and I did get a few small hangups in the first week of use on medium sized projects. This was the only video I found that really shows how 32 benefits you in Adobe apps - and I'm so glad I upgraded.

On launch day, I ordered a 14” 10 CPU/14 GPU (so just bumped up one level in CPU and GPU) w/ 32 GB RAM. To hedge my bets, I also went and got the base 14” at Best Buy and used it for a week. While it was still very quick and I never really pushed it to the limit in Photoshop and Illustrator, I could tell the medium load I was running was inching towards the full RAM capacity. So I went ahead and returned the base model and sticking with the upgraded one. Yes, it’s $650 more, but if you can swing it, to me, it gives the AWESOME (not just great) performance you’re looking for….

Without having seen your video I just ordered a MBP 14 with the top-of-the-line Pro-Processor and 32 Gig RAM. My cameras are a Leica SL2 and a Leica Q2. Both produce RAW (DNG)-Files with around 85 Megs each. After having watched your excellent video I am relieved that I choose 32 Gigs of RAM just by instinct. Thx a lot.

Your review had me checking LR performance on my desktop and my MacBook Pro M2 14 inch with 12 cores/16G RAM/1TB SSD. I was honestly quite shocked that just reading say my 6500 photos from 2013 would be such hard work for the CPU, they really spooled up, as I scrolled and the thumbnails were being generated from the RAW images. The difference though was that the desktop which is a i7-5820K CPU with 32G RAM made it look easier I would say quicker than the MBP which quickly maxxed out the cores while the desktop just cruised through with 50% or so on the cores. The desktop also has liquid cooling which helps, the CPU temps don't rise very much. LR offers software for both the macos and Windows so it is easy to switch back and forth as I wish. It also has an MSI RTX2060 card in it. The desktop made me realise, that mighty though my MBP is, the desktop is better where real performance is needed. Portability and peformance per Watt is the strength of the MBP. I only upgraded the RAM on the desktop a week ago and it cost $130 AUD which is less than $100USD compared to $700AUD to do the same upgrade on a MBP. The use of very large panoramic images is not something I would do so I doubt I need 32G on the MBP. Your video though is excellent and it did make me think...I did learn something from it.

I am working on that video. And I would say that unless you really can push it, there's not going to be much difference. Also RAM in previous Mac systems vs now is a bit different as well. macOS manages it much more efficiently now and it is a lot faster than Mac from the yesteryear. :)
You’ve reluctantly made me realize that 32 gig ram for my new M1 MacBook Pro is required as large panoramas are pretty common for me. Oh well, better to know now than order the wrong configuration and regret it so thank you.

Well you convinced me to return the 16gb model i just ordered and buy the 32gb model that’s currently 5-6 weeks out. I appreciate this thorough review because everyone on youtube said 16gb was more than enough. My 2015 macbook pro does exactly the same thing you showed on the 16gb it just can’t keep up with a lot of layers and adjustments.
No, the issue is that in synthetic or straight forward benchmark without a deep dive test, you won't see these things happening. So I am glad that you'll have what fit your workflow best.

If your budget is tight and you can only upgrade one thing, 16 GB or fewer cores can still complete any task, perhaps slower , but if you run out of drive space (if traveling, for example) you are stuck.
Yes, RAM, GPU cores matters very little. Reverse logic, you cannot expand RAM, but you can always carry extra SSDs or drives when you travel. CPU/GPU cores slightly slower sure, but RAM, if the apps need it, it needs it.

I was skeptical at first and placed order on 16GB model. After see this video multiple times, decided to cancel my order and changed my config to 32GB. It simply one of the wise decision I ever made. Editing in C1 alone and the RAM usage already reached 22GB. 32GB can handle pictures from A7RIV perfectly.

I’d also add: it is not atypical to use LR / C1 and Photoshop open all at once with Chrome and some other stuff in the background. Slowdowns and beachballs on the 16GB felt painful just watching, and I know of images where my current 32GB on my intel drove me to the point I wanted to stop working on a given image.
These new macbooks are so impressive overall, and other reviews had me seriously question whether I’d need 32GB RAM. Now I know I do (I thought simply using the money for 2TB would be the way to go…) Thank you so much for your videos, they are absolute gold.
You're welcome! And RAM to SSD swap are fast not but if you compare even on the midline M1 Pro it goes up to 200 GB/s, the read and write on the SSD is about 5 GB/s so you are talking something that is 40 times slower when it has to swap.

I use the base model MBA M1 (256GB SSD+8GB RAM) and it kinda slows down in LR when browsing through a lot of RAW images and starts to choke when I use masks (which I use a lot). So this video definitely helps me to make a decision which variant to get on MBP 2021. THANK YOU!

My macbook pro (intel) from 2020 is only 8GB of RAM, and it runs Lightroom Classic very smooth even with working with hundreds of images.

Great demonstration on the importance of Ram when using Lightroom. Amazing that 32gb ram can make that adjustment without stuttering. As I mentioned in previous comments I got the 16" MBP with 64GB ram, but it seems like 32gb would work fine for my A7RIV panorama's and photoshop work. I should get my MPB by the end of November and I look forward to reworking some larger projects to see the improvement.
If you got the 64 GB with the Max there are some surprises that you will find when working with large files in Lightroom Classic and PS. However, there are also areas where it is just ok as well. But I have speculation as to why and support for my thoughts coming up in a video soon. But for what you do, you will love it!

Hi Lucy, I am gathering data right now and a video on this will come out Monday. But what I can tell you right now is that more RAM does speed up Photoshop and LR Pano Merge by more than 50% so if your workflow involves large files and you are going to keep the machine for a long time get the 64 GB.
How long do you keep your laptops and cameras for? With the small extra cost of the added ram that you can’t add later I think it’s worth the better user experience to stay with 64.

I've heard that the SSD 1TB have faster rad and write speeds than the 512 models, i would be interested in seeing a base model with 16gigs of ram but with an upgraded ssd performance.

So glad these videos (as well as Tech Chap and MaxTech) came out which stopped me from going Max 24/32 and instead went to Pro 16/32 (2TB). Didn’t really save me money but it gained me battery life, swap, heat and fan noise.
Between the M1 Pro and M1 Max 14 & 16" Models the battery life gained / loss is marginal. Swap is related to RAM function and at least 32 is good depending on the tasks. As far as heat they are comparable much better than the Intel so anything is a gain really. Fan noise if you want minimal go with 16" more room for thermal.
This video is extraordinarily helpful to. me. My Lightroom and Photoshop processing isn't generally as sophisticated as your examples, but I've hit lags in PS especially when the number of layers has multiplied. I'm going to trade in my M1 mini for a new MBP with the M1 Pro chip. Now for sure it will have 32GB RAM and a 1TB internal drive. I may get also upgrade the CPU and GPU cores too. This demo has helped me prioritize these decisions.Thank you!

When M1 came out last year I decided to go easy and got 8 core Air with 8Gb of RAM. While it's fine for LR classic (my biggest files are Leica Q2 90BM files) it's not sufficient to smoothly run Capture One 21, even the version with M1 support. It was running just fine on my XPS 15 I7/32MB but not on M1 Air. The main issue is lagginess even in simple operations like changing exposure or displaying/hiding mask. It's laggy. Other people reported no issues but they usually have 16GB of RAM. It's still fine for me as Air was my 'test drive' and I was still going to get the 16" given it's coming with SD card slot. Now it's here and I am leaning towards 10/16 core with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I think I will skip 14" due to lower battery size.
Good choice and I agree with you about the M1 Air statement. The good and bad part about the M1 air is that there's no fan. So in heavy task the computer would thermo throttle down by quite a bit.
A good real world example of how 32 gig of ram is more efficient in relation to photo editing. Bench marks can be useful, but it's good to see it in terns of application use. My Mac Book Pro from 2013 has served me well, but it is now time to upgrade. Finally we have a Mac Book Pro worthy of spending money on.

Well done. Finally a review that is a "real life" example and isn't just comparing benchmarks. I'm a long term Windows laptop user and very seriously considering a move to the new MacBook Pro. I have found LRC performance to be an issue, particularly for HDR merged images; I often use 5 images with up to +/- 2EV. I would be interested in your perspective on 16GB vs 32GB for this scenario.
For HDR merge that is not an issue at all, the machine are much faster than the intel counter part. As far as 16 vs 32 GB, it does not make too much of a difference, but if you are a multitasker or work with large files then I would go with a minimum of 32 GB. Or spring for the 64, which can speed up some task but I think overall it is overkill for many.
@@ArtIsRight Thank you. I have found HDR merge is (frustratingly) slow on my 16GB Intel laptop so it sounds like I will see a significant improvement with the MB Pro. Sounds like I am like you in terms of being a multi-tasker. I suspect my current LRC issues are more because I have too many other things clogging up RAM.
HDR merge on intel machine or on the M1 yes but on these as you can see in my graph they are super fast. Also this is the reason why you should get more RAM but as I found out HDR merges uses more CPU than RAM on the system.

The swap happens well below the threshold, and yeah, that's a wear on the SSD. I'm thinking 64Gb too for future proofing. If this is my main PC, then I'd plan to have it longer term.

Great video and thank you! I work with those file sizes and last minute I canceled a 16GB and changed it to the 32GB and now I'm doing a happy dance. I hate beach balls and that's a big reason I'm trading my 2019 16". It was laggy using brushes with larger files. Glad to see my new machine won't be!

I have a question. How will be the performance for merging HDR RAW files taken by Sony A7iii and working with dng file size each 160mb plus. I work on around 60 files in every catalog. Will be lagfree workflow? Ordered configuration is 16” M1 pro- 10 cpu 16 gpu with 32gb memory and 512 SSD.
HDR merge is really fast on these machines. And your RAW from Sony A7III are not too big. Yes the final DNG is large but these computer will go through it like cutting through butter. Overall, they are really great SOC

good demo 👍 many other reviews on youtube only compared the speed of exporting images in Lightroom for 16GB and 32GB RAM (and many other softwares / benchmarks) and concluded that there was no significant difference and it was not recommended to spend extra US$400 to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB RAM… although not many people will need to edit 192.3MP image everyday.
No but remember too that most of these benchmark were ran with just the test program open. Start multitasking in real life and 16 GB falls apart quickly. Also as Photographers sometime we use LRC and PS at the same time, now you are competing for RAM not to mention web browsers and tabs. ;)

Yes most programs are not as demanding as pro app, I am referring to Pro Apps here such as LRC, LR, PS, C1, FCP, etc. And many of these such as LRC, PS can be memory demanding. So when running them simultaneously, you need more RAM but at the end of the day, some will take this advice and others will choose to follow others guide and go with 16GB. And that is ok too. For me I know what I stand for and what I do. Each photographer needs are different, for me I do large file but this might not be for everyone. What I am show is no entirely out of the scope of possibility. I'm not photographing 100 MP camera or anything like that. These are the common D850, D810 that many photographers own. Cheers.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks. I am using D800E and D850 too. So it is worth to know if editing the most common 45MP RAW from D850 (i.e. not a super huge stitched 192MP image) by LRC / LR / PS is still acceptable with 16GB RAM. 🙏
Yeah you can totally use 16 GB on those, but if you start to have multiple programs open and running in the background then the computer would start to swap the RAM to SSD and that is where the slow down happens. But if you don't mind that they you are ok. Don't let me tell you otherwise. I am recommending the optimal configuration, but only you know how you use your computer and your workflow best.

Nice to see real-world benefits of more RAM - was there ever any doubt?! I'm curious though about 64GB... Don't you wonder how much more benefit even more RAM could provide? Especially when running Chrome with multiple tabs, and plenty of other multi-tasking in the background? That's the real question for me.
There was doubt for some. And a lot of misconception about Unified memory. 64 GB does show benefit in some area but it is not as unilateral as one would expect like in previous generation system. Also I shall do a chrome test at some point
Hello. I tried doing the same with a 200 megapixel dng extension photo. This is my device : MBP 16'' M2 PRO 12CPU 19GPU 16GB 1TB.. As you show in the video, there is no stuttering or freezing. If you move it too fast, there is some stuttering. But never enough to be an hourglass.. Even if I did it very fast, the hourglass never came off. Systems and programs can be developed in 1 year.. I have immense respect for their hard work. Continue !!! Mine is an update after 1 year..

I haven’t watched the video but I can definitely say that I think 32GB of ram is the sweet spot. I have a base MacBook Pro 14 inch, and while it doesn’t give me any problems, the 16GB of ram maxes out quickly when you’re using light room and photoshop at the same time. It starts, at least on my MacBook, to use swap memory. I could care less about my MacBook using swap because I upgraded from a mid 2015 15’ MacBook Pro 256 GB and it used swap memory all the time. I just upgraded to the new M1 pro MacBook. Therefore, if my old 2015 intel MacBook lasted this long without failure then that’s the least of my worries. 16GB will work just fine but, in my opinion, 32GB is better. Photoshop is just greedy for ram. I have no problem editing photos or 4K videos on the base model. Handles it like a champ. 4K is the highest resolution that I use. I edit video and pics from my Sony A7iii, DJI MAVIC 2 pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max with no problems.
