    The end of the video is very important too, Mariano immediately assumed the nuts when Mikita xRaised, which to be fair, probably every opponent Mariano has faced up to this point is only repping the nuts in this spot. But going through the entire hand, we know neither player has the nuts in their range anymore, so Mikita can raise strong but not nutted hands, and Mariano should shift to wanting to block that range of hands more, not a straight that's no longer in range

    I'd like to comment before i finish the video just not to be biased by the outcome.
    I guess Mikita has a decent portion of his range on the river that just wants to go to showdown (weak suited Aces, 2nd pairs etc) and therefore has a decent amount of natural checks. Given he opted for the passive line with 9s twice its probably one of the best ch/r candidates available on the river because he unblocks villians most likely valuebetting range on the river (AQ,JTs etc etc) and the only way to increase his value by a single street is to ch/r or go for a massive overbet himself. Overbetting has the downside that you probably end up betting smaller than a ch/r would allow you and checking 3 times is way harder to balance with your nutted range + in the real world not often occuring therefore the bluff catching portion of most people would increase in calldown frequency. As a simple man would say "what do you want to tell me mate...call" xD
    Lets see what happens, thank you as always for your analysis :)

  • @camilotm
    @camilotm Před rokem

    I got one question,at @13:57 it's said that we always prefer to focus on blocking value since there are more value combos than bluffs,but shouldn't we focus insted on unblocking bluffs? ,because if we block bluffs ,we could potentially be blocking a bigger % of the villains bluffing range ,we know that the wider the range,the less important are blockers and off course the value range is wider than the bluffing range.

    • @FindingEquilibrium
      @FindingEquilibrium  Před rokem +3

      Not always- It depends on the specific situation, but in most scenarios you are "supposed" to have more value than bluff on the river. Blockers are a function of shifting probabilities and so you generally want to focus on the combos that change the probabilities of as much of villain's range as possible. Ideally you want to focus on both value and bluff but sometimes it can be hard when there's an overlap of cards that bluff and value bet, so the suggestion to focus on the value portion (which should have more combos) is just a way to simplify complex spots.

    • @camilotm
      @camilotm Před rokem

      @@FindingEquilibrium yeah,off course ,actually on the river we must have more values than bluffs,otherwise we would be obviously overbluffing.
      Also,I agree that in some situations,blocking value may be more important than unblocking bluffs,(seen as the general impact of our specific hand in creating that sort of umbalance in villain's bluff-to value ratio).But, my point is that in general(not considering an specific spot,instead what could work in most cases),we should focus more on unblocking bluffs,for the reason explained in my last comment .
      This example comes in my mind:
      - pot size bet ,villain has 10 value combos and 5 bluff combos(balanced),
      -we have a hand that blocks 5 combos of bluffs and 8 combos of value.
      If we focus or prioritize value,we could be tempted to call right? (because ,as said in the video,there are more value combos than bluffs available).But the fact is that even though we are blocking only 5 bluffing combos ,those represent 100% of villain's bluffing range.
      Im aware that im giving an specific example ,but wouldn't it work in most cases aswell? since what remains true in all spots is that in order to be balanced villain is supposed to always have less bluff combos than value combos(as a necessary but obviously not sufficient condition).Also it could be even more critical in spots in which the bet size is really small.

    This was a good analysis, I learn important concepts from watching this channel. The comments though ! All the armchair quarterbacks putting down Mariano. He's just a kid who a few years ago was delivering pizzas and now he's playing high-stakes all the time with a bankroll he built from playing cash. He got to the river cheap with the second best hand, that was under-repped and the solver even shows that he should call. One of the comments states that the $1,500 bet was "disrespectful" lol. What I think is disrespectful is the tagline of this video, which one is Mariano supposed to be, recreational or riff-raff ?

  • @WillPage
    @WillPage Před rokem +1

    Mariano bet the river because good players don't miss out on value, you are almost crazy not to bet for value in that spot. What intrigues me is the size, it is almost a check and his reaction doesn't gel with "oh I was hoping he'd raise" so why bet at all? If he bets 60% pot or 120% pot, assuming he is best and can beat most A's or slow played QQ-KK, if he get's raised like this, it's an almost immediate fold. He made it harder to fold to a river raise by giving Mikita the opportunity to raise HUGE, making it look like a bluff (something a player of his calibre, is capable of). I think it's a fold for Mariano, but in a beast vs beast vacuum, the entire hand makes a lot of sense. I think Mariano played outside himself with that tiny river bet, due to a sense of occasion, naturally, I think he bets big there, to polarise his range but his tricky dickiness got him in trouble.

He can also have quite a lot of bluffs here because of how capped Mariano looks. I feel like any pair with a Q or a K is decent and of course QQ or KK. Sucks that you don't lock the straight but at the same time I kinda like it because you don't block the cards he might turn into a bluff. Very nice check on the turn from Fish though. I like the sizing on the river too. I'd have gone for 16k, he went even bigger with 20.

      Not really sure why you are calling Mikita ‘fish’ here. Also not really agreeing with your analysis on x twice with a straight, think KQ is a pure bet both streets since we unblock every calling hand besides pair+draw. I think both players played this hand really well regardless of outcome.

      @@DrEdMaN616 I mean I've always known him as Fish from back in the day. Yeah I don't think I'm checking OTT with KQ that often but I do think I can find it some of the time. I would have been more concerned about AA though, from Mariano's perspective. Which also means I'm probably calling with JT. I guess AJ is the best bluff catcher because you block AA and JJ, the two hands that make most sense imo.

    This analysis is very result oriented. If Mariano had a hand more in line with his actions, or if he just checked back for a third time, would everyone be saying that 3 checks with virtual nuts was a fabulous play? Mikita was very lucky that Mariano was at the top of his range. and more typical lines would have yielded similar result without the risk of making no money. Imagine Mariano had a hand like JK (very much inline with his range), Mikita would have given him 2 free shots at his 8 outer, and if Mariano bluffed the river with a similar bet Mikita would have won the minimum, while allowing Mariano to realize his full equity for nothing.

    • @Face_The_Void
      @Face_The_Void Před rokem

      No one’s saying it’s a ‘fabulous play’ FE is purely showing that the line he took is solver approved albeit a rarer line.
      I think it’s a great line to take against Mariano specifically, you can figure out why for yourself

    • @DavidGarcia-uy2sx
      @DavidGarcia-uy2sx Před rokem

      Watch the video again... this board smashes Mariano's range so much... He has better sets and flopped straights, pairs+SD. While Mikita has those as well, he has a lot more overpairs that lose equity on this flop. You're only considering the player's holdings while FE is considering their whole range which is what good player should be thinking. Of course if Mikita could see Mariano's holding he would cbet big and bet 3 streets and win more potentially but that would remove the essence of poker.

    • @cgj2371
      @cgj2371 Před rokem +1

      @@DavidGarcia-uy2sx well to start I’m never checking this flop with bottom set. It Has nothing to do with knowing villains holding. Just my holding as played.
      personally I don’t think Mariano is flatting TT JJ with his late open against a single straddle 3 bet. He seems hyper aggressive to me so I’m only really worried about KQ (which he still might 4 bet pre) and a landmine type Q8. And checking here because you’re thinking maybe he has the nuts or a set is more fearful than anything.
      And if a “good player” is considering his “whole range”, he should also be thinking about the hands he gets thick value from… like an AJ/KJ/QJ, AT suited with backdoors. JT. Etc.
      Again, I just like a c bet here because I’m only really worried about KQ (based off Mariano’s Image, and even then I think he’s 4 betting that prelfop along with better sets). And if Mariano did flop the nuts or 2nd nuts, all your outs and Backdoor outs are clean and you’re still not a massive underdog.
      Nits are more likely to show up with sets here. Maybe Mikita doesn’t consider that because he’s not as familiar with his game as someone who watches his vlogs/streams.
      Edit; small typo.

    Great analysis but I feel like you dont looks at previous hands in this session where Mariano got bluffed off handed a few times that night. To me this is why he called the big bet on the river. If he is playing well he makes great laydowns but I think he really lost his way in the session
    In saying that mikita masked his hand so well with the checks and Mariano wins when he is putting the pressure on but doesnt do well when on the other end.

      I admit I didn't watch the whole session. There may have been exploitative considerations at play but my main focus on this vid was just on the GTO strat. From what I've seen, Mariano is a solid player and I don't think he played the hand poorly (perhaps other than the small river bet, but that probably wouldn't have changed the outcome much).
