Shinku La Climb Is SO Easy, But AMS Will Kick Your Ass | Day 2: Zanskar With

- Where's the off-road, man? That's the only question I kept asking Jasveen as we climbed the Shinku La (16,580 feet high) on our Triumph Tigers. After all, we are headed to Zanskar and I have only heard everyone raving about the water crossings and offroading there.
But, we only got smooth roads throughout till the top, climbing from Manali. It didn't even take long!
We did make a big mistake though - and paid the price for it.
Without having a Diamox, we decided to embark on this ride, and climbed from about 5,000 feet to 16,580 feet in a matter of a couple of hours. That really messed us up.
We had started feeling signs of AMS at Jispa, which is located at 11,000 feet altitude, and it only got compounded by the time we got up to the mountain pass.
And there we made another mistake. Instead of quickly descending the pass - we knew we were in for a tough time due to AMS - we decided to spend a half an hour there, clicking pictures.
Within a few minutes, my head was in a free spin and I thought I would just fall down - Jasveen was no better.
Anyway, what happens next will be revealed in the next episode.

Unfortunately, this might be the last time Zanskar has those off-roads sections we all love. From the looks of it, come next year or the one after that and there might as well be black top all the way.

Abhinav, the gear you're owning is my dream gear, I'm running on Solace's top model jacket and pants, I hope I could get my hands on the TCX and the kriega hydration bagpack, I'm all about 100% black outfit. You wouldn't know how great it is to see someone like you whom I adore, in a complete black attire (except the helmet). There is an age old way to execute water crossings for SUVs. i.e. Tie a man a rope give him a stick in hand and let him wade through the water. if he can safely cross then SUV can do so. Use the same method for your bikes. Crossing on foot gives you the chance to find the best route as well. Use the stick to find the best place to put your next step in water. It also helps you to gage the water flow... Cheers and best of luck.

Whatever u say X Pulse seems more fun in the mountains and more enjoyable to watch.....
Of course it is more fun in the mountains, but not in the high mountains. The XPulse there just doesn't have the power to climb. That's the reason why everyone in the Himalayas rides a Himalayan and not an XPulse.

Corrections.: Diamox is acetazolamide which is diuretic.
Must not be used for headache.
Only when there’s difficulty in breathing.
Secondly: you have nasal obstruction ever since I’ve been following. You probably need surgery( septoplasty) . For which you can come over to my clinic 😅

And diamox has to start atleast 2 days before we expect high altitude. Coupled with high levels of hydration and combined with honey lemon ginger tea- will hopefully see you through high altitude
