Left behind: The untold story of the women of Senegal | Al Jazeera World Documentary

  • Thousands of people, mainly young men, have attempted the hazardous 1,500km (930-mile) boat journey from West Africa to the Canary Islands.
The United Nations-affiliated International Organization for Migration calls them "irregular migrants" and records the numbers who fail to complete the journey. In 2022, 543 people drowned in 45 boat accidents, the IOM said.
In this film, we go to Senegal to meet some of the women who are left behind to pick up the pieces after their husbands, brothers and sons are declared missing, assumed dead, during one of these "desperate journeys".
Wives and mothers talk about their emotional loss - as well as the threat to their livelihoods without a family breadwinner.

I think the people who tried to go overseas & returned home have a duty to tell the truth about the hardships of living undocumented in foreign lands. Its is not a easy life and many countries are not welcoming of asylum seekers despite needing and exploiting their cheap labour. People need to stop glamorizing life overseas. If the government did more to help and educate people , they would be no need for people to risk their lives for a decent standard of living. Who know's about the future of Senegal 's struggling fishing industry.

You comment that people are not welcoming asylum seekers. Sadly most countries have many people who are jobless and the world over migrants are flocking to Western countries only. How many asylum seekers should Western countries welcome. Millions? Problem with African and Asian countries is that parents are of the mindset that children must provide for them. This is the root cause of migration. One mother fled Sudan and mentions her 7 children are nowhere to be seen. 7 children seems like women are baby making machines. Parents must take responsibility for their children don't have so many when you are on the bread line

@@agnescraig2912 True. The problem with africans is they put all the burden on their kids. And even if there is a job in the city, it’s not enough to support the whole family (parents, grand parents, brothers, sisters.....) no wonder many will have to go to Europe or wealthier country.
If their gouvernement start to impose fewer children or number of children is based on income.... not so many will risk their life for dying into the sea.

Khadijah, you have said it all. I am actually an interpreter for people who seek asylum in The Netherlands from Senegal and The Gambia and the stories they share are really hard to listen to. For me, this documentary is actually where my work comes full circle - the fact that I get a glimpse of what happens to those they leave behind. Life overseas is literally not a solution to their problems, however, it's the way the western world has marketed themselves for decades, right? (When we talk about African countries, some still refer to them as third world/emerging, but that only speaks to the power dynamics tbh) I truly believe that our local governments should be creating more awareness programs and implement sustainable solutions, because at the end of the day, the problems are still there. It is so hard, because it is so complex!

Here in Gambia, the sister nation of Senegal we have the identical problem. The corruption both governments practice mean fishing trawlers from Asia take ALL the fish with the blessing of the governments. This leaves local people with no fish to catch and like everywhere, when a resource is limited it drives up the price beyond the reach of locals. The last minister of fisheries here is currently serving a 2 year jail term for taking bribes from the Chinese. Yet, still the trawlers persist. 🤬

Because reefs sould be orotected and maintained! Because as soon as these companies are done suckung these seas dry they'll be iff to another destination and the locale will be left destitute. For the life of senegal and continued prosperity of all its important that the traelers be strictly regulated and they retirn a share back to the people and environment they impact! I wholeheartedly agree with your perspective. The dynamics of demand and supply play a pivotal role in shaping various aspects of our world. It is undeniable that the Western world, driven by its desire for abundance and convenience, has fostered a culture of acquiring vast quantities of goods. This attitude extends beyond fishing and permeates many facets of our lives.
As a Swiss native, I know that our land does not naturally provide an extensive supply of fish. While our lakes host a modest population of fish, it is not sufficient to meet the demands of the swiss people. Consequently, they rely on an intricate system of sourcing fish from diverse locations, enabling people to access a wide range of fish species in practically unlimited quantities, readily available in every supermarket. However, it is crucial to recognize that if people were to alter their mindset and challenge their surreal consumer behavior, the necessity for extensive fishing efforts would diminish. This shift in attitude has the potential to reshape the fishing industry significantly.
Although Switzerland's contribution to the overall global demand for fish may seem relatively small when compared to a nation like Japan, it is vital to understand that the cumulative effect of individual choices can be profound. Every person has the power to shape the world through their purchasing decisions. This holds true not only for fish but also for all consumer goods, including meat, clothing, and electronics.
In essence, if we collectively embrace a more conscious approach to consumption, acknowledging the environmental and ethical implications of our choices, we can drive significant transformations. By reconsidering our insatiable appetite for quantity and adopting a more sustainable and mindful perspective, we can create a world where the trollers and fishers no longer feel compelled to deplete our marine resources. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to wield their economic influence to shape the future of our planet, taking into account the broader consequences of our actions.

I am just wondering if the people who are trying to go overseas know at least life in these countries; First you arrive in a country: You have no skills, no legal papers ( as you entered illegally a country), you need health insurance, you need job, shelter, food, etc.. Well good luck. Many Africans living overseas are returning back home after their education and working overseas for some time ( legally) I mean skilled jobs.

The podcast you just watched is a testimony. Unfortunately, you saw it wrong. You fail to see people innovating by coming together to do something about their situation.
I don't know where you live, but you have just displayed a lack of understanding of world economics. The government of Senegal's hands could have been forced to issue trawling licenses in a loan negotiation for something else they prioritised. These things are not that simple or straightforward.
Another thing is the world lending organisations give African countries crushing rates compared to what other richer countries enjoy. All these external actions cascaded down to the average person on the street. It affects the ability of their government to help actualize their conceived dreams, compared to a young in richer countries. There are government schemes to support young dreamers.

Break the spirit of traditions. We are where we are because of our past decisions and we will be where we will be where we will be in the future because of the decisions made now. A wiseman Christopher Orji once said
