I would pick this one hands down! The interior, exterior and fit and finish is like no other. Audi is dated and the Lexus is rough around the edges with polarizing styling. There is simply nothing like the feeling of slipping into the seats of a Mercedes, it makes you feel like you are in a vehicle that should cost you $20k more than it does. I live in Canada, and near the mountain here we can go from hot to cold with snow in a matter of hours. This vehicle has what it takes to do the job for most people here! Very good review as always!!

I bought a used 2011 GLK because I loved the aggressive looks, interior practicality but in the end the rattle free, high quality fit and finish and the superbly smooth ride won me over. Previously a new top end 2012 Kia Sportage. It was better than I expected but came with every bell and whistle and the clearest rear view camera. I drove a 2007 BMW X3 which handles amazing well, had more get up and go, but drove hard, Hard steering, hard suspension, hard plastic interior. Before that a Element box which was the polar opposite of the X#, soft suspension, no guts, loud, noisy and really ugly. It's only advantage was it could hold a washer and a dryer inside with the back seats removed. So looking back each SUV I drove was good at one thing only. The Kia (good gadgets included) and a fair price, the BMW X3 for handling, the Honda Element for hauling big and bulky stuff....but the MB GLK can haul a lot, it's ride is smooth and refines, it's quiet inside, it handles very well and it's 4Matic system is outstanding in snow and on solid ice where I'm from. It just does so much well. I look forward to driving the GLC in a few years, once the initial fixes come in and they offer a similar V6 that hopefully will be as silky my GLKs is. Location: Northern ski hills in Quebec.

I live in Russia. I had my test drive of the ne GLC 300 (249 hp-hp may differ in other countries). This car is an amazing example of urban-premium crossovers. GLC 300 4matic shocked me(in a good way).
First of all this merc has beatifull interior design which combines retro style details with high tech so called Tron legacy high tech design.
Secondly - car handling, dynamics, suspension systems leaves audis and bmws in the past. Ride comfort is outstanding-like you`re driving S-class(no really I`m not joking.GLC accelerates very confident.
This car gives you the feeling of total control and confidence.

I just did a test drive yesterday and yes it's impressive for a 4 cylinder, we parked on a very steep hill and when I step on the gas hard it just get go quickly no problems, this because the engine’s has 273 lb-ft of torque and come out at just 1,300 rpm. The driver modes was very responsive in each mode, I can feel the difference reacted of the transmission in each mode.
The style is good looking, no crazy aggressive here, but this is how it style will last longer. I currently drive the 2014 MDX so it make me feel a little small in the GLC but im sure i can get used to it. It's may be a little loud if you step on the gas aggressive but other than that it's fine over all.

I live in Los Angeles and have a Lexus NX in the family. Currently debating what to buy. I definitely will get a German car, drove an Audi before and love the concept. For urban SUV driving the GLC seems favorable, as it is superior to the other German competitors in that segment at least in terms of driving assistance (Audi doe not even offer a heads up display). But on these weekends when you want to drive up to Utah and do some off road driving, I am wondering if any of these SUV's from Germany can really function appropriately. I have just discovered your channel, but thought I get your input and thoughts. These luxury SUV's almost seem to sophisticated to take onto dirt roads. Comments ? Suggestions?

I would choose the GLC. I am a recent Chicago transplant to Montana and need an SUV for driving in the mountains and on rough roads from time to time. I'm looking for comfort and utility in a midsize SUV. I really like what this car has to offer but will need to see and drive it for myself. Out of curiosity how is the head room and leg room in the car?

  • @U20E27

mr moto. Nice work. The GLC has my interest as a replacement for my aging Subaru Outback. yes really. We use our OB as a truck, road trip machine, daily hauler etc. I know Mercedes thinks everyone wants 20inch bling wheels, but I'm thinking 17inch SUV tires, plug kit, a spare tire we bring on camping trips, and the fantastic Range / mileage of a blutech. Mtex seats which VW had in 1980 great material! No panaramic roof, awd, hitch, no air suspension. And you have my Subaru Outback replacement with larger load ratings, more refined interior in a very similar sized package.

+Aria Hajiaghabozorgi Pretty well covered this in both episodes - this, the two Lexus First Drive Reviews and this short clip: czcams.com/video/B_5nq3VuzTg/video.html - However, I would say that they are very different executions of what luxury is today - at least in the 'near luxury' segment. The Mercedes is more flash of the two . . . I would say a bit more refined where the the Lexus has a very high quality interior with - and I can't believe I am saying this about a Lexus - a much more daring interior design. Net net - neither are bad (for bad, see the latest gen Jaguar interiors - XE and XF) just different.

USA here. Seen plenty of these off-road SUVs at shopping malls. I would choose the GLC just because I have a soft spot for real-wheel drive. Not just that though, it's a great car compared to the segment; much lighter than the Audi 4WD, more exciting than a Lexus, and that elegant interior trumps over anything in those pseudo-sporty BMW X-series cars. If I was a millionaire I'd buy my mother one of these, no question.

+kalapa Kilapari Good Question! Mercedes has been hush about Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Early on, my peeps at Apple (used to work there) told me Volvo, Ferrari and Mercedes were the 'launch' OEMs. As you know from this episode (czcams.com/video/pz54LcvBL_4/video.html), Ferrari was first to the party. Volvo has been vocal but we have yet to see a car with it. And Mercedes, nada . . . That said, we are shooting the new 2017 SL in two weeks and I will ask the folks there . . .

Audi Q5, because of the handling, the full panorama roof, the B&O sound system and also because its quicker from 0 to 60 for the supercharged V6 petrol model at 5.9 seconds which is really cool. I would also maybe go for the Porsche Macan Turbo/GTS but thats too expensive for me :D

Since this is a road test review, why not actually tell us how it drives, qualitatively? especially relative to other crossovers in the same segment. I.e. does it ride, steer, drive train lag/responsiveness, highway tracking.... When you say it is quiet, it really doesn't mean a thing unless it is quieter than its competitors.
Much of the features or numbers you mentioned we can already find from manufacture specs...

  • @GlobeTrot707

To answer your question about which between the new GLC, and the Q5, RX, and NX I'd choose, the answer is simple - GLC. Although my reasons are many, I'll surmise it like this:
The three-pointed star on the GLC has lineage that VAG and Toyota simply lack. Not only that, I trust the engineering that has gone into the GLC more so than the flashier cousins of the RAV4, Highlander and the VW Tiguan.
The difference between these cars is the same difference a buyer of a fine timepiece may find when looking at a Rolex. Sure, the fellow in his office that wears a Fossil watch can tell then time just as well as his Rolex can. But at the end of the day, he knows the engineering, know-how, history that went into the Rolex is something you just won't get in a Fossil or Casio watch.

  • @technicalterry3

    Hey UK /europe here.
We currently can only get a single 2.2l diesel engine - tuned differently -so what is referred to as a 220d or a 250d. Both return the same fuel consumption interestingly.
Right at present i would go for the 220d over the 250d, and definitely over and above the Q5 - its a bit long in the tooth in the current guise though I think there is a new model arriving in 2016. BMW? Hmmm... new X1 or X3; I think this competes with the X3 more directly, though the new X1 is a VAST improvement on the old decidedly odd X1. Lexus / Schmexus... not a fan of Japanese cars, all a bit plasticy, even the upmarket Lexus's and Infinitis. It's a personal choice. RangeRover Evoque - well possibly, but would have to be with new Ingenium engines, as prev engine was rather unrefined; the 9 speed 'box also a bit confused at times. Mercedes seem to have the 9 speed auto box well sorted out.
And interiors in the new crop of Mercedes are just the business. Have kinda got used to the floating info panel; the BMW has something similar and far less attractive (at least in the X1)

Choosing between the RX, NX, X3, Q5, Discovery Sport, and GLC would be a difficult decision. A test drive would be necessary before making the final decision. +chromatics kent the macan looks good outside... but the outdated interior is too cluttered and I'm convinced that the only thing it's interior has going for is knowing that the exact interior is on the $100k+ porsches

+SahijApple93 100% agree! Benz's design, comfort, and drive are an all in one package. Other brands have other things going for them, but not all together. The macan is gorgeous, but really small, and about 30,000$ more expensive (therefor incomparable)... for that price, and GLE550, would kill it.
This GLC kills the competing bmw, audi, lexus and acura. The x3 is the closest thing to this, but once you sit in a benz, comfort of a mercedes tops and comparable bmw...heck, bmw still uses those pathetice orange gauges...

+chromatics kent Macan is just a VW tiguan with leather. Thats why never buy the Audi's or Porches suvs they are just vw's with leather. When you take it apart you see many parts with VW logos.
at least with benz you are buying a benz and thats it. NO parts bin GM type thing.

Thanks for the great review as usual. to answer your last question: I would say, why would you buy cars that break down more frequently and have dramatically higher maintenance costs and less reliability compared to their rivals? Yes I meant German cars....Just because they were the best 50 or 60 years ago, it doesn't mean they are still the best. I would definitely go with RX and lexus brand with the highest reliability ranking in the last 12 years, Germans are sportier and more fun to drive? why would we care about these when we are buying an SUV? most car reviewers just pretend they love manual gearbox and describe car handling capabilities just to show they are men of technicalities with masculine mindset.....not all cars are made to be sporty. thanks for the great video...

Hi MotoMan, I am super torn between this and the Audi Q5. I like them both but am leaning to the Mercedes because of the newer overall design of the car. But the Audi is more proven over time to be reliable. I do a ton of long distance driving and what a car that is going to be good on gas and have a good AWD system, I live in Minnesota so that is a must. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!!!!!!

I drove glc300 and rx350. both are great cars, but i chose rx350, bc it has way more room than glc300, rx made me feel that it has more pool than glc. the way rx made the places for cups is a perfection. rx is much smother and easy ride than glc. i would greatly recommend to try both before you finalize your purchase. rx is absolutely amazing. as some of the comments saying here, most of Mercedes Benz are look like each other, therefore i want someing that is different so I purchased RX350

What I needed is whether a 6 foot tall person will fit in the back seat behind a 5'10" person in the driver's seat. Nothing even close to that was here. Does it have that incredibly tall hump in the back like it's direct competitor, the Q5? How's the infotainment system? What does the cargo area look like? None of that was here, in an otherwise entertaining piece. Can you address these questions directly? Thanks

I have a 2013 Q5 and starting to look for my next car. This is a contender but feel like it has the same problem as Q5, seems slightly underpowered. Granted, I have the 2.0 T and could get the 3.0T Q5 (which I am considering) but Mercedes needs to increase horsepower to contend. The next Q5 coming out will have more power and great looks - something to consider.
Another thing to think about is BMW includes maintenance, both Audi and Mercedes do not. I also own a 2006 Mercedes SLK 350 and can say the cost to take it in for routine items and god forbid anything goes wrong like it often does = a $500 + bill every time.

Hi MotoMan, I'm a 40 yr old with no kids in Austin TX. I'm trying to decide between this car or waiting for the Infiniti Qx30. Thoughts? I'm using it for Real Estate so driving locally in the city a lot and I plan to keep it around 10 years.

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  Před 8 lety +4

+Mark Kendrick Hey Mark - Not really a fair comparison . . . the QX30 is a rebadged GLA. Between the two of those, I would do the GLA all day long. However, if you are going to be driving clients around, you would probably want the bigger CUV which is the GLC. Simply from a driving dynamics perspective, I would do the GLC because it is a RWD vehicle with an AWD option. And for some of the roads on the outskirts of your great town - or for those times you want to take your lady to wine country or even the Salt Lick - the GLC will be more rewarding. That said, keeping it 10 years, I would suggest you also look at the Lexus and the Cadillac. It couldn't hurt to look at Kia Sportage, Traverse, Enclave, Explorer or Hyundai because after 10 years, those may be the easiest to own from a reliability standpoint. Yes, not as exciting but I always like to factor real world reliability when ownership exceeds 5 years or the warranty.

I have test drived this MB GLC and and all the conpititors too. I have myself BMW X3 xDrive 20d A. I must say that the drive with GLC is very comfortable compared to other SUV's of thus size. I valuation it very much as I'm from North-Europe and I drive small roads at the countryside a lot. E.g. Audi Q5 is much harder and BMW X3 quite much too.But on thing I don't like in GLC is it's luggage room. It's much smaller than in X3 and Q5 because it's so low when you want to see backwards and use the shelf. The design is very nice outside and inside, much better than in GLK was and compared to the competitors too.

  • @fixmdude

Big problem: The Off-Road Engineering Package is not an option in the U.S., AND the Snow Mode (Slippery Mode) traction setting is ONLY available with that package on the GLC. (The GLE has a Slippery Mode even without the Off-Road package.) So essentially Mercedes thinks that families looking for a mid-sized 4-door SUV would want 2 different levels of Sport Mode as standard, but not even 1 Snow Mode as an option! That's the silliest thing that's ever happened to a 4 wheel drive SUV.

Love your videos, i'm from Malaysia. Liked the BMW X3 drive dynamics but its already old in the tooth, dated cabin, etc. Hate the looks of the Lexus, we have the NX and it's so small inside. The 2017 Q5? Boring. So went and tested the GLC. we get the 250 with AMG trim locally assembled. Priced slightly less than the BMW and Audi, so that's a plus. Can't believe how smooth and quite it is. And the build quality is superb. We have a Merc C200 and although it's the same cabin but the GLC feels better built? Wife love the seats and space. I like that it looks small but roomy inside. Not as sporty to drive as a BMW but wife loves the smoothness. So if the Mrs is happy, i'm happy ;)

I think the car accomplishes what it sets out to do. It isn't a driver enthusiast car like the Porsche but it is comfortable to drive and the 2.0L engine is adequately powered in my opinion. Not the leader of the segment but definitely not the laggard and a good choice for anyone in the market for a compact crossover!
