SCOTLAND'S OLDEST GEOCACHE

  • In this 3rd day of our mega-trip through Scotland, my mother's homeland, we planned to hike to GCF0 - Scotland's First Geocache. It sits halfway up the mountain Ben More, and is no small task to get to. But we, the "Canadian Invasion", organized a meet'n'greet to connect with other geocachers on this day, to make to gz with a team effort. Come and join us on this adventure!
    This... this was an experience I wish my mother could have enjoyed.

    This was really a big adventure!
    Without the event, I wouldn't have thought of looking for that cache. But together the search is even more fun. It was a great group and the exchange with cachers from all over the world brought new insights. Special greetings to Belgium and Portugal.
    It's great to be reminded of the exciting day with this video. I am very happy to have met the crazy Canadian Cacher and Vlogger.
    I hope to see many more videos of you and your adventures. That's what geocaching is all about. Thank you very much.

      Master cacher! You made my day with that climb - It was so great to enjoy that hike with you, despite pulling up the rear, haha. You were the star of the show ;) Thank YOU for joining the adventure! Did you get to climb Ben Nevis as well during your visit to Scotland?

  • @3HappyCampers

    That was an incredible journey to Scotland's oldest...wow God's creation is truly amazing. The streams the rain the clouds and even the fog all beautiful. That was cool the other cachers were from other parts of the world. It so neat how geocaching unites us with each other and with nature. You always do such an outstanding job of engaging us (viewers) in your adventures. I've really enjoyed your trip to Scotland and am very touched by the love you have for your mom. Thank you for sharing memories of her in some of your episodes. I would have loved to have met her.

    Sorry I missed the premier but I'm glad I have watched the re-run.
    It's nice to see something familiar that you have created. I attempted the walk last febuary but the steep slope along with my arthritis got the better of me, 1st time I haven't got up anything. I'm back up again next febuary, would be good to do it in winter conditions. I love Scotland, I've never missed a year going up in 28 years. The clouds rolling in gives a different perspective, you respect your surroundings more. I'm still old skool, map and compass, I've not used a GPS on the mountains after I've seen them pack up due to the cold. I'm pleased you have found Scotland's 1st. Definitely wear goggles, keeps the rain out of your eyes ❤, thanks for sharing your soul, no need to opologise.

    • @cachetheline
      @cachetheline  Před 4 lety

      It's really unfortunate you couldn't join us for the hike. But I am glad we managed to meet up later on. I like that - you respect your surroundings more. Absolutely! It doesn't hit you, the effect of the cautions until you experience it firsthand. Just like on Ben Nevis. One simple cloud surrounding you seems to close off the entire world, and one wrong step or a few meters in the wrong direction and you could be WAY over your head. And the video doesn't do that environment justice. That spot you could hear all the water and you were surrounded by grass - you really can't see the ground and what you might step into a few meters away.
      Amazing experience. Thanks for watching, and for the chats we exchanged before this too!

    What an awesome video all the way around. Thank you for taking us with you. You did such a good job with this one I could almost feel me doing the same thing you were. Highs and lows of the climb, rain falling down, clouds dropping the temperature, quiet time, reflecting time. And you are so right about people watching your videos being about to live vicariously through your adventures. That is one of the things I love most about watching geocaching videos - seeing places I will never see in person. The words at the end about your mother was very touching. I am so glad you left those parts in the video. There is nothing like moms. They are the best and are missed greatly.

      @cachetheline  Před 4 lety

      Thank you so much for the kind words. Much appreciated! That's my only hope really, that whatever goes into the video is a positive encouragement and experience. It's hard not to be real when vlogging, and sometimes deciding what to include and not is a tough decision. I'm glad it had a good impact. Happy caching! :)

      And I hope you do make it one day. There are only so many countries, and even fewer with an oldest geocache with an experience like this :)

  • @cachetheline
    @cachetheline  Před 4 lety +1

    HOLGER! The route to this cache is indeed up a slope, and a non-stop slope. Be ready to CLIMB! And watch your footing - it looks like grassy field, but there are many hidden hazards amongst the foliage.
    There are many ways to approach the cache, and no defined trail. Holger and I took a more direct route, while much of the other group continued to hike around the base for a longer but less sloped (but still steep) ascent. Watch for the fog! Don't get disoriented!
    One thing you don't get is a sense of the sheer scale here while climbing - not until you see people in the distance.
    Thanks for watching! Don't forget to like and subscribe!
    And comment below! Have you found the oldest cache in any province/state or country?

    • @ajcampos11
      @ajcampos11 Před 4 lety

      @@cachetheline, yes, it was very hard. In fact, it was the hardest cache I have done. The initial idea was good... longer, but easier. However, when we leave the trail supposedly direct to the GZ, without the need to climb more, it was not the right place. When we arrive at the GZ direction, it was about 200 meters to direction... UP.

  • @halemeister
    @halemeister Před 4 lety

    Great adventure! So, THAT'S a terrain 1.0, huh? Yeah, totally wheelchair accessible! Loads of beautiful scenery in this one, despite the cloudy and foggy conditions. Glad you had the chance to find this one, and that you seized that opportunity when it arose. At any point during the hike up to the cache, did you think to yourself "what the heck am I doing?" It seemed to be a bit of a strenuous hike up the mountain and the conditions weren't exactly favorable, but oh, to seize that moment! Thanks for taking your viewers along!

    • @cachetheline
      @cachetheline  Před 4 lety +1

      Back in the day, those geocachers were intense! Terrain 1's like this, imagine the terrain 4.5! :P
      It would have been nice to see farther, but at the same time the fog adds a whole other atmosphere (literally). I was close to thinking that once or twice :) But we pretty much had all day so there was no rush. Holger's pace kept me pushing the limit, haha.
      It really looks like plain old grassy hill, but under that grass it was so rough and rocky with crags and holes and spring to avoid, and mud caused a whole lot of slippery spots especially on steep spots. It was nuts! But FUN! :D

    Fantastic. I want to go back to Scotland again already! Watching this makes me wish even more our group could have stopped. We had to drive right by. We saw you guys standing there. It looked like you were just about to head up. But it turns out a 50-person coach was too big for the teeny parking area. Who would have thought? lol Could have added 21 cachers from the U.S. to that group. It was definitely a soggy day that day. You actually got a better shot of the viaduct at the beginning than I did. The coach's windows were covered in rain when we went by. A really nice tribute to your mom here too. Looking forward to the next one already!
