- There are just hours left for people to vote for the UK's next parliament.

Polling stations close at 10pm - when exit polls will give us an idea of who'll be running the country for the next few years.
For the first time in a general election, voters have to show photo ID to cast their ballot.
But, delayed postal votes aside, it appears to be passing off smoothly.

If they were going to fix elections they would be pushing for online voting. If you think they'd erase your vote and pencil it in elsewhere then they could just as easy tear up your vote and print another one. The real fix is FPTP. Why? It’s barely looked at and your name is crossed off anyway so a second vote cannot be placed.
A lot of vulnerable people don't have photo ID, so they're locked out from voting unless they have someone who can assist them (which they don't all have, especially after cuts to social care by the government who introduced the ID requirement)

I went to the polling station in London this afternoon. Everything seemed fine until I was directed to the electoral officer who was giving out the actual ballot papers. She actually told me to mark my cross next to ''that one'', with her right index finger pointing to the Labour candidate. Obviously I did not vote as she told me! This is scandalous and I am in the process of reporting it to the Met Police. If anyone else has encountered anything similar, I would urge you to report it to the Met on 101. Also to ask them for the contact details of the Met Police designated Single Point of Contact (SPOC) officer for electoral law. They tried to fob me off saying that this officer is in the council but on the Electoral Commission website it states clearly and unambiguously that ''Every police force in the UK has a designated Single Point of Contact (SPOC) officer for electoral law.'' I was on and off hold for the best part of half an hour and in the end obtained a Met Police email address for a specific officer, but still they claimed to know nothing about the existence of such an officer, i.e. a designated Single Point of Contact (SPOC) officer for electoral law, in the Met Police.

The problem is in my own experience of trying to live just above a decent comfort level for 35 years knocking my pan in & working hard to provide for my family is that MPS don't experience the very problems that most hard working folks here have to deal with on a daily basis. Weird, I always had to show my driving licence when i voted as far as I remember for last 5 years or so.
Are you in Northern Ireland, which has required ID for many years? In GB it came in in 2023, so you would only have needed to show ID at last year's local elections, unless you live in the small number of local authorities that ran ID trials in 2018 and 2019.
