I nearly had a heart attack when I saw you remove the buds on your cuttings 🤣 Girl, those buds are like gold!!!
Right?!? I really wanted to have some peas thou lol
But what she has done is working out fine!
Mee too lol😂
I love that we can start new ones from the branches. I got three started from cuttings just putting the stems in the potting soil! Happy accidents!! 😜
It looks like it needs iron. I love this "Happy little accident"!
Oh same here! I ordered some iron :)
I just watched Garden Answer and the host was talking about iron deficiency.
Hi! Great video ,hydrangea in container, is it during winter??
I learned that rooting hormone actually creates a callus on the cut end and speeds the rooting because of the callus. The hydrangea stems created a callus on the cut end while they stayed out in the open for one or two weeks after the spring prune and it seems that's why they rooted so easily. I think I'll try to get hardwood cuttings to root better by letting them callus for a while just like Rox did by happy accident!
THANK YOU! I LOVE YOUR ACCIDENT! I was wondering if this was possible. Truly appreciate you making this video!!! 🌸🌸🌸🌸
It sure is! Good luck!
I just potted up some cuttings I took in June from one big leaf hydrangea and another set I took in July from a smooth leaf hydrangea. I’m excited that they took so easily.
Oh nice! I am so excited!
Can’t wait to see the results!👍😊
Thank you! Same here!
That’s amazing. Please show us the process of winterizing it and cuttingly in the fall or spring
I think, just your shoving those stems in that double weave is brilliant and gorgeous. Wow
Right!?! Who knew!
Bob Ross is my spirit animal!!😁😁😁
I’m definitely going to take cuttings of my different varieties and give it a try. Thanks
I absolutely Love your style of teaching and honestly telling how you do it …Great video..🌱🙌❤️
Thank you!
You got a huge green thumb!
Very beautiful Roxana!! The best mistake ever! I started two limelight standards in 2020 also and they’re doing well. It’s quite satisfying to create from what we already have isn’t it! Good luck on all of your cuttings and thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge and garden beauty.... have a great day gardening my friend! Nichelle’s Garden🌿💚
Absolutely beautiful hydrangeas, great video 😊
Thank you!
That is hysterical .. and somehow not really surprising.
I had a similar but less accidental experience this year.
popular wisdom tends to fixate on cuttings from new green growth but last year's growth seems to work just fine.
Amazing! What I liked most about this video was that it reminded me that it's good to just "try" things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but either way, there isn't anything to lose. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Absolutely! 🦜🌳🌿☀️
I’m trying to make a standard tree form out of a firelight hydrangea, it seems to be working 👍
It clearly shows that your hydrangea it's lacking iron. Chlorosis is a yellowing of leaf tissue due to a lack of chlorophyll. You can treat it with EDDHA Iron Chelate or Espoma Iron tone. Thanks for sharing great tips and advice from your beautiful garden. Good luck. x 🌸🌸
Fingers crossed! Can´t wait to see your new standard Hydrangeas for next year!
I am a bit excited about that :) :)
Nice "happy accident". I'm trying to root some right now just like that. I hope I have as much luck as you did.
WOW I remember you doing this and just look how beautiful he looks 💕
Thank you! It took off beautifully!
What a great video. Good luck with experiment. It's Late July here in Upstate New York. My hydrangeas are in bloom and I'm going to try to do your experiment here. Good luck with your experiment
I love Limelight Hydrangeas. Surprisingly (in my experience)they are pretty easy to root. Really enjoyed this video
Thank you!
I’m a new subscriber and I’m in love with your hydrangeas. Really looking forward to the results of your experiment. Thank you.
Love this idea and I am trying it for myself today. I just finished cutting back my Limelights and goning to give it a try. Thank you for sharing your experience
You are so welcome!
I use the solo cups too for cuttings. I switched to the clear ones so I can see how the roots are doing.
Oh that's a great idea, I had these from my seed starting a few months ago so I just used these, clear ones would definitely be easier to tell.
Thank you so much
Great job!
Thank you!
Wow, What a great story! I am going to trim a couple of branches from my hydrangea and see if I have an luck. Thanks for the inspiration! You might try Espoma iron tone for the chlorosis.
Yup, I am actually applying some iron from espoma today, good luck with yours!
Check out Mike Kincaid, he changed my life. I am now a magician.... i can make new plants FAST😁
@@SoilandMargaritas It could also be a Magnesium deficiency. I give my Hydrangeas some Magnesium flakes at least one time a year
You can also make hydrangea bonsai. wrap bonsai wire around the branches and bend the hydrangea breaches to look like a bonsai. You start making hydrangea bonsai trees , I guarantee you will be the only one in town that grows hydrangea bonsai trees.
I use dwarf type paniculata hydrangeas for the bonsai trees. l also put the hydrangea bonsai tree in a traditional shallow bonsai pot. Hydrangea Bonsai Trees sell like crazy in Niagara Falls N.Y. zone 6a.
WOW!! Just the video I been looking for!! Hydrangea Standards are too expensive!! Thank you & please update us in about a month or two.
Hello there!👋 do you have an update of the new cuttings you made? I also have a limelight prime cutting which I plan to form into a standard. It is a tiny branch that broke and I just stick it to the ground and forgot about it, and I didnt expect it to survive🥰 This video is giving me courage on what to do next so thank you!🤗
Check my latest video! I have garden updates there! 😍😍
Wow....you are so good at this....absouluty lovely!!!!!
Thank you! It was a nice surprise.
Lucky you
They make a "rooting powder" that I would suggest dipping the bottom of the branch in before putting in the soil. I seem to have good luck when I use this product. Hope you have great success!
Thanks for the tip!
Amazing!
This is Absolutely Amazing!! Your Limelight Hedge inspired me to try my own!! I bought five limelight’s this year and started my hedge! I hope it turns out as good as yours! Thank you for taking the time to create such amazing content!!
That is awesome! Sending you good hydrangea hedge vibes! Thank you!
What a beautiful story!!! I always want a limelight standard, but they’re too expensive. I will try your method too. Thanks for the idea.
Good luck!
Amazing!! Love it. You truly have a green thumb! 🙂
I don't really believe in the whole "green thumb" thing, I think people kill plants and just keep trying, or figure out how NOT to kill them... lol... believe me, I did not have a green thumb when I first started!
Looks like you caught the propagation bug ☺️ I’d like to try more myself, especially annuals that I can’t (or don’t want to) start from seed.
Have u checked out Mike Kincaid... I learned ALOT....n he is fun!
Absolutely beautiful 💖 I am propagating my Annabelle hydrangeas this year
Good luck!!
Great! Happy for you...those flowers are gorgeous!
Great video!
Thanks!
What a wonderful accident!🌺❤️
Yes it was!
Thank you for this idea. I am going to try it out
Wonderful! Good luck!
Cool 🙂 I will try it.
I’m going to try this! Thanks 😊
Look at you, performing science experiments. That's fun.
After hearing about your happy accident last year I tried poking some sticks in the soil. I didn't know about the younger wood, I didn't strip leaves and after a while they just looked dead so I pulled them out.
Augh! I know what you mean, I am going to try next spring the same way I did the trellis part so hopefully I get better results.
So amazing!
Right!?! Who knew?!
Hi Roxana!🤗Interesting experiment. Looking forward to seeing what becomes of them. Thanks for sharing, Blessings💞
You are so welcome!
Good video 🤝🏼💐
This is awesome! I am ready to try it!
You should! Good luck!
Good luck 😉😉
I love it ♥️
Thank you!
Looking forward to see your results.
Fingers crossed!
Me encanta el video a pesar de que entiendo casi nada el ingles. Me gustaria entender para plantar los esquejes de la paniculata que tengo, gracias por enseñarnos sus ideas.
Wow, that’s great! You took a happy accident and nurtured it into a real beauty! You can always try snap peas again. 🙂 #happylittlehydrangeas
Right?!? Poor sugar snaps didn't have a change!
@@SoilandMargaritas 🙂
I propagated some and they all caught just cut the leaves on the branch in half before putting in soil either way i think you will have success 🙌
Laura from garden answer made a video about leaves like that.. some iron.. 🤷
I will try this with you... Sounds like fun.. and will help with adding more hydrangeas to the garden 😁💚... Thanks for sharing...
Please do! Let me know how it goes!
Gratidão 😃
Hi Roxy I just discovered your channel today March 31 ,2022. I was looking at your videos on how to start with seeds indoors . Then the hydrangeas caught my attention. That is one of my favorite flowers. I was wandering how this experiment turned out? Thanks from Letty in Wa. State. 🌿💐🌹
Hi Letty, some of they took but I don't think they made it thru the winter, however, the one that rooted in the spring, that one is still going strong.
I like to experiment also. I have plans to do some cuttings when we get back from our trip. Where will you store them?
I am going to keep them in the shade for now, good luck!
Me paso algo similar con las fuchsias.
Could you imagine had you left the trellis the way it was and how the plant would have looked!?!?
Hmmm a diamond shape hydrangea lol
I’m viewing this video from over a year ago. It has inspired me to think of my own plants in a different way…hopefully I can experiment with a little propagation of my own. I’m curious to know if you are able to leave your concrete/clay/ceramic pots outside during our winter months? I live close by and have not left mine out due to concern of our freeze-thaw weather.
Some planters do better than others IMO, I empty most of them and leave them outside anyways.
😯💚💚💚
Lovely! Do you have an update on the cuttings?
I did a video about them... if I remember correctly, none of them took. I had better luck with Spring ones.
Your Happy Accident looks like it has Chlorosis (needs Iron). I pamper my Hydrangeas trying to make a Standard yet you get one by completely ignoring it...good job : D
Thank you!
3:51 Hi I’m a little confused here because I don’t see any cut where you’re pointing. Also do we need to do that or is that just how you got it to grow like a tree?
Hi there,
My limelight has been eclipsed by the neighbor's woods encroaching and this year it is doing very poorly. I took all the old branches off a few weeks ago & put them in the garbage not realizing I might have been able to grow new ones. It's way too big to relocate & I don't have help anyway & can't do it myself. But now I am excited to try some cuttings if I do get some flowers. Last year there were only a couple. I am in NY State. Do I just leave the cuttings in pots outside during the winter?
Thanks for any reply you're able to give.
So, you can try leaving the cuttings in pots outside, but the pots will be so little that in my opinion it will be better (at least their first year) taking them inside, just in case.
I gave a somewhat update on this video recently (czcams.com/video/QqTK1fLsrbs/video.html), while people do start a lot of hydrangeas from cutting in the summer-ish time, for me the ones in the Spring work better.
I love it. I am going to try it😊. Have you experienced yellowing leaves on any of your hydrangeas in the hedge? Also, love your hair it is so thick.
Thank you Serie! I think 2 years ago I had that, it also happened to be the year I did not fertilize... adding a well balance fertilizer for this huge shrubs is key! I should probably be adding some compost but so far they have been ok with one Spring fertilizing.
@@SoilandMargaritas 😊 Thank you
Did it work?
That’s a great surprise. Where would you put the cutting? Will you keep them outside or inside your home? I think I am going to give it a try. 💐💖
Outside in the shade, right now I just want roots
Okay, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am going to try it 😬🤞🏻💖
Wow! That’s a happy accident! I love it!
Thank you!
Add chelated iron-it will fix that yellowing problem.
Thank you!
Can we get a 2023 update on hiw this looks?
Follow along with the channel, half of those cuttings did not make it, I mentioned on another video after this one that I have better luck with spring cuttings vs summer cuttings.
Wow what a nice accident and yes it needs iron tone
How old is your plant? I just bought one from HD and want to know it’s growth rate. Thanks.
I don't know which plant you are referring to. The hydrangea hedge was planted in 2016, I started with HUGE plants that were so big to even move around in their containers, I have 5 of those planted there.
It needs chelated iron
Yes it does, I ordered some and it should be arriving soon.
How did your experiment turn out?
Not good! I had better luck with the Spring cuttings!
Any update on these babies?
I think only a couple took, this was a while ago, I have better luck with cuttings that I take during the Spring
this is how you make hydrangea trees . l use the Jadam natural fertilizer method on my hydrangea hardwood cuttings. I plant my cuttings in 100% leaf mould and water my hardwood cuttings with the Jadam natural fertilizer method. I use 100% Jadam natural fertilizer method when l water my cuttings. l get a 99% success rate with planting my hardwood cuttings in 100% leaf mould and only water the hardwood cuttings with the Jadam method.
How is it doing now?
Amazing! I gave an update earlier in the spring.
Happy accident leads to happy experiment!
For sure :)
It needs iron
It does! I ordered some and I am going to add some soon.
Why not do what you did before 😊
Just trying something different.
