- Iron Maiden is like your favourite history teacher. With its lyrics this band has made thousands of boys and girls around the world interested in Ancient Greece, World War I and history overall by giving countless lessons with their music.
And since I am a Ukrainian in Ukraine I thought we should take a look at some of the songs the band has written about wars, and afterwards release a special episode about each of those… so let’s do it!
We will take a look at such songs as Where Eagles Dare, The Trooper, Aces High, Tailgunner, Run Silent, Run Deep and Afraid To Shoot Strangers from the first Bruce Dickinson era; The Aftermath, The Edge of Darkness, Como Estáis Amigos and The Clansman from the Blaze Bayley Days; and then discuss the songs Bruce Dickinson sang about specific wars after his return to Iron Maiden, such as Montségur, Paschendale, The Longest Day and Death or Glory... ending with the newest record and Darkest Hour and Hell on Earth.
And which is your favourite war-themed-song by Iron Maiden?
00:00 - Your favourite teacher
00:57 - How it all began
04:10 - Blaze Bayley tops the classics
07:41 - Bruce Dickinson returns
10:19 - The newest history

It's very cool Bro seeing EDDIE CLAUSE ROCK 🪨 ON
ABSOLUTELY AGREE ABOUT PASCHENDALE! Definitely one of the best Iron Maiden songs ever!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Yep
Double yep from me.
One of my favourite Maiden songs, and was the song that got me do deep dive into their discography. Amazing song!
Yeah,, it's a classic,,👍
Masterpiece 👌
*What you said about Paschendale, I agree 100%.*
A great selection of songs, certainly a befitting topic for Metal music.
Out of all these,Paschendale takes the cake for me as a favorite.
Pachendale is easily the best one out of these. Looking forward to each episode. 🤘🇺🇦
Thank you once again MP for actually using my idea and turning it into a real thing! Love it 🤘
Thanks a lot for suggesting this video topic, my friend! I had so much fun making it! Thanks!
The Longest Day is an amazing song from start to finish a very powerful telling of the D Day invasion. The chorus is so moving and live it was awesome! Great video! UP THE IRONS 🤘
My favourite IM song
great episode! thanks.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Steve Harris is the coolest history teacher definitely
Agreed 👍💯
Never enough of Maiden!
It’s important to remember the time Iron Maiden covered a 1976 Thin Lizzy song of the name “Massacre” Durring the Seventh Son era Which was about the battle of Little Bighorn also talking about Native Americans Against The Colonizers , I think that song inspired run to the hills to be honest especially if you hear the Live & Dangerous version. You can hear the inspiration
Bruh that cut to Val's animation on 6:12 made me so damn sad, wish he returns before Christmas
Same 😢
Thank you so much for talking about "The Longest Day", it's one of my favorite songs from the Irons and maybe my favorite from the album "A Matter of Life and Death". It makes me sad smh the fact that not too many people talk about this song when speaking about Maiden's historical records, and since it talks about one of the most important and famous historical happenings in the world in such a poethic way (if we can call it as such) that puts you in the scenario of what those soldiers had to go through, well, what can I say, it's such an underrated piece of art in my honest opinion
Paschendale is my favorite maiden song
Great video. Thanks for all the amazing content.
I think Pashendale, Afraid to shoot strangers, The Clansman are my favourite song about the war.
Bruce’s solo work includes Silver Wings which is an absolute banger.
Great episode ! Fully share your wish to see Darkest Hours live one day.
Not to hijack the comments, but here's something interesting I've found about the teasers for Bruce's upcoming song "Afterglow of Ragnarok" - feel free to use it:
I think that the number on the wall in the penultimate teaser, if you watch it closely, isn't 420, as the internet seems to think, but 42b! It refers to verse 42b in the Voluspa, in which Fjalar, the rooster, crows the onset of Ragnarok (see wiki: Fjalar).
The rooster also appears in the previous teaser, where Bruce is lightly dressed. I can’t use the other word for “rooster” here, but you know what I mean (fitting with Bruce’s surname as well).
So, Fjalar is either just announcing "Afterglow of Ragnarok" in these teasers, or, likely, he could be the main character of the song, portrayed by Bruce.
Wow... that's a great catch! Let me do some more research on this, man and get back to you!
Great episode! And yes to Paschendale first.
definitely start with paschendale! it's my favourite maiden song that isn't off of brave new world, i'd easily say it's the most touching song they have written
Great job
Montsegur is a killer song. Loved learning about this religious battle.
I'd love a series where you cover each of these songs and the historical topic of each one in depth. UP THE IRONS!
So glad you doing this . Was hoping maiden would do a book for each album . You beat em 💪💪💪💪
Dance of death is severely underrated
If it had better cover art, it would get the recognition it deserves.
both the song that names the album and the album itself, and imo Montségur + Dance of Death and Face in the Sand + Age of Innocence are such perfect combos and nobody seems to talk about it
@@Wedvix97 you're right. It was a victim of when it came out I think. It was right after brave new world that was the return of Bruce and really well liked, so inevitably people would think it's a let down. Also the year it came out the technology wasn't great for the cover they wanted. If the music came out in the 80s it would have killed and of the cover art was done now, it could look amazing.
@@ToniaGlitched agreed. Face in the sand is amazing and it's not even an after thought for most fans, it's not even remembered.
@@scamp7887 right? it's weird how most fans seem to ignore most of what was launched after Brave New World, besides there being so many great songs on the newer albums, and... imo the post 2000s era is the best, with A Matter of Life and Death being the best album and Dance of Death the best song I ever listened to, and I say that after having listened to Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Piece of Mind and Powerslave hundreds of times (and I mean the whole albums btw)
And none of those can hold a candle to "Dead Winter Dead" ... ;)
Good list, I concur about Paschendale.
I completely agree with you on Pascendale, in my opinion, their best ever song!
I’m ignorant about the later albums so I appreciate your highlighting a few songs…and I would love to learn about Paschendale first…including how to spell it
Yes more videos about this Songs :)
Paschandale, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Longest Day, Where Eagles Dare, Aces High, The Clansman, Hell on Earth
My favorite war song that is so catchy it is Where Eagles Dare
8:21 absolutely true...when I first heard it I wasnt a big fan of it but this song eventually became some kind of part of me....I love it and yes make the next video about Paschendale please
When i got my first guitar a few months ago, the first song I tried learning riffs from was Paschendale. One of my absolute favourites!
I fully agree about paschendale. It is definitely my favourite.
Iron Maiden's first historical war song is Invasion from their Women in Uniform single.
sabaton is my favorite history teacher but Iron Maiden is amazing too.
i didn't realize where eagles dare was a movie until yrs after i discovered maiden.....i saw the book in the library at my school and dove right in. one xmas they had a clint eastwod marathon on tv, and that's when i saw the movie for the first time. still one of my fav movies ever
Absolutely love your knowledge how's my favorite bands
Hey man, did you know Savatage is releasing their comeback album next year? In the same day that Cris Oliva passed away.
wow no... this is the first time I hear about it, will check out!
For Edge of Darkness, I think that it's more based from the book on which Apocalypse Now as been taken from: Heart of Darkness written by Joseph Conrad in 1899.
Paschendale is an excellent song! Up there with their best for sure.
Absolutely love this! Wish you could do a collaboration with sabaton and really did deep into the history of each song! As with pascendale it was the only song on the list that gave me goosebumps ❤ goosebumps ❤
Paschendale is one of their best somgs ever.
I love the 2 war songs on X-Factor.
Paschendale favorite song by Iron Maiden about war. It's song have a good "story telling" feature. Lyrics, vocals and guitars riffs, and drum party, telling us about bloddy battles in the Paschendale's war field. On of the greatest song about war which telling us one thing - war is hell, war is very bad shit in our world. Peace friends and Up The Irons 🤘
But actually I love all their songs about war, but Paschendale my favorite
I am new to Iron Maiden, but from the songs off this list I've heard I bet the others are great and I will listen to them, also "Glory to Ukraine! - Glory to heroes!"
Definitely start with Pashendale!!
Need a video about Saxon war theme songs!
Where did you find that footage of the matter of life and death tour? Thats way better quality than what I’ve seen on here.
Tailgunner can also be attached to dropping of the A bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as they definitely say "The Enola Gay was our last try" Enola Gay being the name of the bomber used. Although famously it didn't have any gunners or even guns on board to allow it to climb fast and high enough to get out of the blast zone.
Paschendale!!
Agree 100% on Paschendale. But you Left out "These Colours Dont Run" ....
....from Cold, Bloody War!
Paschendale, no doubt about it!
The best band on the universe!
That’s so cool that you mentioned 1914 I know those guys are helping to fight the war right now but is there any word as to when they’re going to tour especially the US
If I make that Paschendale episode I'll invite Dmytro to speak as well ;) They had to cancel their tour sadly :(
I 100% agree about Paschendale! It's one of the band's greatest all time songs, and I would LOVE to see it added to the setlist!!! Please start the series with this one! And God bless you and the people of Ukraine this holiday season. I hope we see an end to this war and the shameless imperialistic ambitions that caused it.
🤘🤘🤘
Do you actually know the guys in 1914?? I just purchased their first full album, it’s killer!
Need a slayer war theme song list
When the wind blows😢?
I thought you missed "Remember Tomorrow", as I read somewhere long ago that it was about Paul DiAnno's grandfather who served in the Royal Airforce during WWII. If you listen to the lyrics, it kinda makes some sense too... "Scan the horizon, the clouds take me higher, I shall return from out of the... fire". All that said, I can't figure out where I read that. The only quote I've been able to find from Paul is that it's simply about his grandfather... nothing about him being a pilot or serving in WWII. So unless we can find that quote somewhere, I think your list is fine!
Do you think they should make an entire setlist mostly consisting of songs about war?
Героям Слава! Thank you for covering these songs. I can't really choose a favourite, but I do like The Darkest Hour.
These Colors Don't Run?
Sabaton well known for history teacher band for somehow I prefer Iron Maiden history songs because they dont sounds glorifying the war but instead giving shivers the horror of war while Sabaton is like recruitment ads
on AMOLAD album besides Longest Day probably For Greater Good of God count because at that time US launching war on terror program and Brighter Than Thousand Suns although its not talking about the direct combat its talkin about the invention of nuclear weapon and its gives the vibes how Oppenheimer regret inventing it
You missed Invaders and Invasion and Blood On The World's Hands (Bosnian War)
Wouldn't the parchment count on the list? Just asking 🤔
Great video! But where is Mother of Mercy?
As far as I know it is not about any specific war... but rather about the horrors of war in general. I might be mistaken though
@@MetalPilgrim oh you’re right. I missed the qualification that it has to be about a specific war. Thanks!
Where was 2 minutes to midnight
That's like a proxy war song
Wait! What..no INVADERS?!
I... never knew Tailgunner was about some sort of war, I was always distracted by the fact it's one of the worst IM songs imo huahauuah I can barely take listening to it for a bit, however all the other songs on the list are awesome, some of the best of the whole band, and I think my favorite from this list is either Como Estais Amigos, altho I completely messed with the meaning of it inside my head, The Edge of Darkness, Montségur or Hell on Earth...
or The Legacy if we ignore the rule that it gotta be about a specific war or battle.
One of their worst songs? It's easily in their top 50
@@neilbeaton9498 hauhauahau that's a matter of opinion, and on mine, Holy Smoke, No Prayer for the Dying and Run Silent Run Deep are awesome; Public Enema Number One and M Russia are very good, Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter is good to listen to, and the rest of No Prayer for the dying (the album ofc) is either boring or horrible to listen to... Hooks in You being as bad as The Angel and the Gambler and Gates of Tomorrow (which I dunno why many people love, I find it the only bad song in Dance of Death)
now do sabaton
Have you already listened to Afterglow of Ragnarok???
Not yet… I know many people have already though. Have you?
@@MetalPilgrim I haven't! I was hoping you could had already listened!! Looking forward to it 🤘🏻
Sabaton like this video
It's also good to note that "Where Eagles Dare" is fiction.
Yep it's a novel written by Alistair McLean who also adapted it for the film as he was fed up with the crap film adaptions of his books.
"Montsegur" is a better version of "Born in '58".
What about when the wild wind blows it’s about nuclear war
How big of Sabaton fan are you???🇸🇪
Honestly? On a scale of 0-10… 0
Never even listened to them tbh
@@MetalPilgrim You kindling me? You would love them! I would recommend
"a lifetime of war"," 82nd all the way" or "ghost Division". Basically every song is historical accurate and about real people and real battles and wars.
What fool would think Aces High is the only IM song about war?
You're wrong about the AMOLAD- You've skipped on the list Brighter than a thousands suns- this is about US WW2 nuke bombardment against Japan
And These Colors Don't Run
don't for the greater good of god talks about the crusades? so it has to be in this list in my opinion
I think Hell on Earth is as more meaning for me cause my brother died in 2020 and I lived threw the pandemic and the political scene here in America I was crying during this song thinking of my brother and the Hell of what the President did in his 4 years in office which was a living terror in my opinion so much hate here still wish goes to prove we all need an stronger Political Party’s for both sides and music could show the way I always vote to benefit Mankind
You missed The Mercenary from Brave New World, although it’s not about any particular war, and Brighter than thousand suns, which we all know what is about. Anyway, Slava Ukrainie
Героям Слава! Thanks a lot, man. I tried to include only the songs about specific wars in this one... cause otherwise it would have been like 2 hours long hahaha
Slava Ukraine
Really? How odd you didn't mentioned Blood on the World's Hands because my fatherland had same situation as your country now. Last war in Europe was in Yugoslavia. Bloodiest war after WW2, if you don't remember. But, Hey, who gives a shit about South Slavs this days when some poor East Slavs are suffering.
I was a big supporter for Ukraine because innocent people are dying, I even donated money for your country and, to be honest, I was devastated that we have another stupid war in Europe. My feeling are in vain, as you and a lot of people like you are saluting with far-right exclamation and Azov Brigade is first on frontline.
Maybe "great dictator" was right?
The truth is... I simply did not know that Blood on the World's Hands was about the terrible war in Yugoslavia. I have A LOT of amazing friends from the region, who are my brothers in sisters and I was ALWAYS very vocal about the terrible things done there!
So it breaks my heart to see a fellow European falling into russian propaganda and saying that I am a n*zi, when my nation have fought them, just we're fighting modern n*zis from russia now
