This song is almost 50 years old. My AGE. And like most of their music, it exists in another time and dimension. There is no year, in hundreds of years people will still be listening to their music. How they accomplished that, I do not know, but they did somehow

I love how you just became 'absorbed' in the music, just as you should. It's a song about a guy (Syd Barrett) who was a founding member of The Floyd.. He kinda 'went out to lunch' and never came back. The band members still loved and missed him, hence, this song.

I did have the good fortune to see them when Syd was still around
Unfortunately I was a bit too young to appreciate the event

Undiagnosed schizophrenia combined with the LSD and numerous other chemicals they were doing made it too easy for Syd to check out. Very unfortunate indeed.

Another small note about this album. During the recording of the album in the Abbey Road Studio, a fat, strangely dressed man with very short hair suddenly came into the studio. Nobody knew who he was and they wanted to have him thrown out. Then David Gilmour recognized him and said to the other band members, "Hey, that's Syd. They say that Roger started crying because of Syd's appearance. Shine on you crazy diamond was also recorded that day, the first letters of which are an anagram of Syd's name. They probably all sat together in the studio for a while and made music together. As far as I know, that was probably the last meeting with the band. Syd was a victim of his own creativity. He gave the band important initial impulses, but with him Pink Floyd would not have been as successful as it was. If only for the reason that Syd was not a person who could deal with success. His spirit was also too experimental. I don't think albums as important as Dark side of the moon would have been possible under Syd Barrett. The really big musical revolution came when David Gilmour joined the band at Syd's request. From then on, the creativity continued and the first steps towards Dark side of the moon were taken as early as 1971. The band experimented more and more with analog synthesizers while Syd was more of a psychedelic person.

S hine on Y ou crazy D iamond, Syd founding member of Pink Floyd was dropped from the band suffering severe mental health issues and the effects of drug abuse. Syd became unable to play live sets, sometimes playing a completely different song to the rest of the band.
However he was both loved and missed by the band and is referenced in alot of their subsequent music. The last few bars on the keyboard of Shine on You Crazy Diamond 6-9 is the main riff from a much earlier Pink Floyd hit called "See Emily Play" written by Syd Barrett ❤
