Been loading pistol on a 550 for a few years. Now I'm going to start loading .223. Your vid is a great refresher on loading rifle cases.
I like where you mention not going too fast because of the powder drop-not finishing before the case is pulled back out. Also checking the case for powder at station 3. I have a little led light velcroed and pointed right down at the case. Good stuff!
Great basic tasks video of the 550. Thanks for sharing.
Lastly, I gotta clean my bench!
Thank you, very informative video . I also have a 1996 era 550B, but just ordered the 550C upgrade kit . From looking at other videos, I think it's a good idea to hold the bullet to keep it straight up as you seat it, that way it will reduce any strain on the case neck if bullet was really leaning over as it goes into the seating die . Great video, really found it helpful !!
Great video! I started reloading for pistol with a 550B (thanks to you!) and am collecting the equipment for .223 and .308. I really appreciate your videos! Thanks for all your videos and God Bless!
I really liked your video. I just bought the same setup as you and I'm really likening the accessories you use as well. You are a great teacher. Very concise and detailed. Thanks brother.
I have been reloading on my Dillon 550 pistol rounds for awhile. I have been thinking of doing some 556 and you video was great.
Thank You
Great tips! Take your time, randomly check your powder charge! Thanks for the video!
Excellent video and how you made it clear on double loads and explain yourself clearly!!
On the subject of your flashlight. I have installed self adhesive strips of high intensity LED's on both inside uprights of my RL550B. I power them from a 12 volt wall wart. They provide an imense amount of light to check powder charge. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for the video, man. Solid reloading video for .223.
Thank you for the support and the kind words. I'm happy to have helped you in your reloading journey. Have a great day! :)
Best instructions ever! Thank you so much
Nice vid, two simple rules I follow with the Dillon.
First never short-stroke the handle always complete the motion so you reduce the chance of double charging the case.
Second, choose a powder no matter which caliber which fills the case at least 3/4 full that way if you double charge a case it will be spilling out of the case and you'll know you've screwed up.
Dillon makes a powder checker as an option you can buy which should reduce the chance even more. I've only run a few thousand rounds a year through mine and with the noBS policy expect the press will outlast me.
awesome vid I shoot a lot makes me want to get into reloading, very simple straight to the point. thank you
thank you for the kind words and support you give my channel! Have a beautiful day!!
you sir are the Bob Ross of reloading. thanks for the vids.
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and share your kind words as well as the support you give my channel. Have a beautiful day!
I love my Dillon! Highly reccomend it! Thank you and have a good day! :)
Wow. thanks for sharing this video, its very educational. Just goes to show how much of a newbie I am.
thank you. I'm planning on doing another when I get my reloading stuff out again. right now it's in storage because I moved
I agree with jocerote, very informative and straight forward. Great job.
Hey! Thanks for the support to my channel and the comment. I have always liked the powder that I used in the video. It shoots great. I love ball powders too. they measure very well. I havent had any troubles metering it at all on my Dillon. When I meter it in my Hornady powder measure it binds up at times. No real problems though. My targets hold a good group! Have a great evening! :)
Thank you sir! Have a great evening! :)
Thank you for your kind words and the feedback! I'll have to look into that LED lighting system. A flashlight is for the birds sometimes. Ha ha. I know that Hornady just released an LED light strip. Sounds like the same thing your telling me about. Have a good day. :)
Wow thanks a lot all of this was very helpful!😇🇺🇸🤠
Thank you! there are many online places to buy reloading stuff. Cabelas is one of my top choices. Have a good day! :)
I have another that I'm getting ready to upload. Reloading .223 on a single stage. Thank you! :)
Can you do a video where you reload 223 rounds of .22? 😉😄 Best reloading video I’ve seen today (I’ve watched about 20 so far)
Yes it’s is true with most if not all purpose made rifle powder if you double charge the case it will overflow all over the place. HOWEVER let’s say your doing some cast projectiles. And you found in a old reloading manual some data that’s like 7.0 to 9.0 grains. Then you look at it again and it’s a very fast powder like 700x. You better be making darned sure your paying attention to what your doing. Yes that type of data is extremely useful and economical as well as accurate. But it also has zero tolerance for any kind for mistakes. As a matter of fact in my personal opinion. Those types of recipes require individual attention. My point is do NOT ever rely on the powers case volume. Most veteran reloaders are all really well aware of this. This is for the new guys just getting into it.
Grate information thanks man
Thanks brother keep the vids coming
Good job 👍
Thank you! You can absolutly use them. Thats the normal bullet. Have a great evening! :)
great video sir
Ose a brosh and roll it on the lube pad then run it inside the case mouth. It won't hurt as long as it's not excessive. Thank you for the support. Have a great day! :)
Hornady has a little light strip out that you can stick on the inside of the press so you can see the powder easily without grabbing your flashlight....just lights up the whole inside of the shellplate!
Thanks for watching! I use my bullet seating die to seat the bullet and to put a very mild crimp in the same process. :)
Excellent!
This is my next caliber can't wait for my shell plate to arrive from Dillion!!!
Thank you for thorough video. I've only loaded 9mm as a beginner on my 550. Wondering if .223 would be more difficult.
Great video
Wish since you went thru a step by step that you would have showed how to 'properly' clean up the powder.
Good job
Very helpful. Thanks
Great video and thank you! But I have the same question as Kevlarjax904, becasue it looked to me like you indexed out the 21st round without crimping just before your double-charge demo. If so was it noticeable at the range?
all of your videos are very helpful. instead of a flashlight you should try a Inline led light system. the light mounts to your press with some two sided tape and plugs into the wall. Keeps your hand loading and press lit rather than having to stop and use the light. Plus they are relatively inexpensive (about $40).
Man that was painful watching the Varget spill !! For the education factor.
At least it wasnt w748...I hate spilling that stuff.
Thanks for the video. Looking at this press.
Will do! :)
yup!
Muzzle velocity depend on the length of Barrel. For my reloading data. Im using 22.8 g vihtavouri 133 of my 20" barrel getting 2800 ft/sec. Give me 2" grouping at 300 meters.
Sounds like you may need to run a brush down through the case mouths to clear any debris. Possibly lube inside the case mouths a little bit more. What kind of lube are you using?
Thanks for watching! :)
Thanks!
It's a Dillon super swage 600. It runs around $100... have a good day! :)
What kind of consistency to you achieve with a seriously extruded powder like Varget in a Dillon powder measure?
Hey jiujitsu great video, I'm new to reloading I've been trying to get supplies and hot some 22 cal 45 gr 223 dia bullets but noticed that the lyman book said 224 dia can I still use these for 223 thanks for ur help.
I have been looking at one these. how much did you pay and where did you get it at?
For the 223 did you have to get the conversion plate and did it come with the funnel for the powder????? Also with the same die set can you make the 556 form those dies.
the 223 kit comes with a shell plate, locator buttons and a powder funnel. you CAN use the 223 dies to load the 556, but make sure to double check your load data! the cases look alike, but are different and require different recipes.
he never crimped that one round when he was gonna show the double charge demonstration
Hey jiujitsu great video, where can I buy whole sale bullets like you?
Watching some videos and not seeing where the 550 knows how much powder to drop?
that's weird... You lube inside the case mouths too right?
What made you pick a stick powder rather than a ball powder for a pergressive press ? or even a short cut powder like Hod Benchrest ? any problems of powder crunching?
how's the targets look? Just a few thoughts.
Does your bullet seating die, also add a taper crimp?? Never mind. I saw the answer to my question, below. I've crushed a few shoulders, learning how to set the taper crimp just right. lol
Honestly I don't see why not if you're selling to an individual that you trust. I would be careful because if they get a bad round it's on you! Have a good evening. :)
Hi JJ Great video keep up the good work. I have a problem just got my 223 conversion kit and got it all set up When I place the 223 case in station one and start to raise it to be deprimed I have every time to guide the case into the die. it wobbles all over and I have to guide it in every time . it seems that the case is not stable in the 223 plate. can you help in any way. I love my Dillon 550 use it for my 357 works a treat. bit dissapointed with the 223. Cheers bill all the way from Scotland
Do you have the locator button? Is it wore out? Use calipers and check your brass
hi what die set are you using and what do you recommend
I just bought one of these but am confused. Since u want to resize before u check for trimming when you resize do you take all the other dies out and after they are trimmed do you take the resizing die out of station one and just worry about priming.
im using rcbs lube with the lube pad
I looked on the Hodgdon website too for that bullet and powder. They provide 3 loads ranging from 24 grains compressed to 27.5 compressed. In a previous single stage reloading video where you were doing more .223's, you mentioned you don't like to reload compressed. Did that change because of the Dillon ?
+wxfield thank you for your comment. Nothing changed because of the Dillon. Sometimes I load compressed for hunting varmint rounds. Other than that, they're normally milder
Is there a reason for them being milder? Is it that the powder doesn't produce as much energy as quickly or something?
Is that the large powder die??
Do you like the Dillon 550? I want one but don't know about it.
Who makes the swager?
In video at the 13th minute you use a blue tool as a chama and its role
Watching you trim, I assume you are aware that you are not reloading .223. You're reloading 5.56x45 which has pretty much the same external dimensions as the .223 but has a different case wall thickness. Glad you backed down the charge from the .223 because in general the 5.56 uses a slightly lower powder charge than the .223 for the same pressure/velocity. BTW, I purchased my RL 550B in 1993. It's still working like a champ thanks to Dillon's minor tweaks and noBS guarantee. I've got well more than 200,000 rounds through it.
You're right! The 5.56 brass is thicker and it certainly effects the load data. Thank you for the comment and support you gibe my channel! Good day. :-)
Did you crimp the 21st round?
Overall a great video with emphasis on safety tips where necessary. One critique is your misuse of the term bullet. You start off referring to the case as "brass" which is good. Then around 18:38 you call the brass a bullet and call the actual bullet the tip. You then refer to the completed cartridge as a bullet.
believe me, I understand many of these terms. in fact, I have a video on this exact topic. it's not released yet. when I film videos sometimes I use many different terms. sometimes I do this accidentally and other times I do this purposely. when I do it purposely it's used as a teaching tool for beginner reloaders. I do this sometimes because the terms that I might call things could be the same terms that a lot of general people that don't understand called them as well. in the case of this video I believe the terms were misused accidentally. sometimes I'll be in the middle of filming and can't think of the exact correct word at the time so I use an alternative word. thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a beautiful day!
Hello, at first you trim your cases, but then you full sizing it? in this case how you can guarantee nice case length? or I misunderstood you?
you have a valid point! trimming after resize them is better. thanks for stopping by
+jiujitsu2000 what dies are using in the 550? I bought some hornady American brand dies and there is a stuck case that is in the decapping die forever using hornady one shot case lube. I'm getting dillon case lube as I think the case lube I used was crap, is it a dillon carbide decapping die in your press?
+jiujitsu2000 thanks for the quick reply! I was like how is he sizing so easy! lol my hornady dies I thought I was gonna break my press
+magicbullets45 dang brotha, I just got done responding to over a hundred comments and its like that daily. please try Dillon DCL case lube... it's great. thank you for appreciation... :-)
Im pretty sure you would vomit and bleed from your eyes if you saw me behind my 550 lol. Some time in the tumbler is generally the extent of cleaning . Ive done tens of thousands of pistol rounds, (9mm, .40, .45, .38/357, and 460 mag, but .223 is going to be a new one. How important is case trimming compared to pistol ammunition? I have never trimmed any of my pistol ammo. 460 Im on round 3 and 4 and haven't trimmed without issues.
inside the mouth?wouldnt that affect ur powder?
Is it illegal if I sell my reloading rounds?
Nice video - I knew you were not crimping in station 4 because you never said you were doing that in the entire video...the empty Dillon station so to speak...
Exactly my brotha! I loaded these for a single action and a bolt action. At the time I did this video I didn't feel the need to crimp because I felt like there was plenty of case mouth tension to hold the bullet for those applications. Thank you for stopping by my friend!
So it's ok if u don't crimp your bullets that much?
(6:15) MOST ACCURATE FOR THE BULLET "THEY" USED AND THE BRASS "THEY" USED AND THE RIFLE "THEY" USED. Everyone be cautious with how you interpret "most accurate" or "safest" loads in these books.
Interestingly at 26:15 he takes his eye off the game - not deliberately. Seemed to neglect running the stage 4 (crimp) on the last round he lets drop before demonstrating the double fill. Easily done it seems.
I didn't take my eye off the game my friend. There isn't a die in station #4. Thanks for the support. :-)
I think if you look closely at the Varget label, it says MAXIMUM LOADS - DO NOT EXCEED - REDUCE BY 10% TO START. So if the maximum load is 27.5 gr. and you reduce it by 10%, that's 24.75 gr, or ~25 gr.
you didn't crimp your last two cartridges.
didn't crimp last two rounds
U forgot to crimp 2 of your bullets at the end.
all I hear is I already got the trimmer set up.ajajajajaajajajajaj. I need to see how the trimmer is set. PALEEEEEEESE. lololololpretty please :P
Wouldnt it be easier to just graught for half an hour and buy the shells from a shop? The national wage in America is 7.25 per hour, so half an hour (the length of this vid) graughting earns you $3.62. 22 shells of .223 calibre costs roughly $4, so, given you are already spending 30 minutes of time either way (graughting or reloading) you only have to pay 38 cents out of your own pocket if you buy them, would 38 cents pay for the bullets, primers, gunpowder, lubricant, plus their share of capital costs like presses, dies, grinders etc?
For many of us its more for the hobby and learning experience, we enjoy it very much. Its the equivalent to someone who likes to read a book.
he fogot to crimp that last round. lol
there is no crimp die in the last station so no need to raise it to the tool head there.
my brass seems sticky when they come down..... not as smooth as urs, and yes they are lubed
you could actually shorten this video to about 10 minutes if you cut all the scrap talk out^^
You should trim each time you reload dude, the whole point of trimming is that your brass stretches every... time... its... shot.
Trimming reducing jams & problems.
The process must be followed.
Look at you! You do it all reloading on a 30 dollar lee press with scavenged brass and now driving a Cadillac Dillon making 223. You rock dude YOU ROCK!!!! Great videos.
