  • In this video, I replace the plenum plate and gasket on my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9L V8 Magnum Engine.
    This is a well known common issue with all Dodge Magnum engines and applies to the 3.9L V6, 5.2L 318 V8, and 5.9L 360 V8.
    Replacing the Plenum gasket and Plenum plate is not a very difficult job to do and really only requires some basic hand tools as seen in the video. Altogether this took me about 4-8 hours to complete so by following the steps outlined in the video, it shouldn’t take longer than a weekend to complete.
    I really hope this video was helpful and thank you for watching!

    Absolutely tremendous video. Cleanly done too!

    It's been shown that generally the only thing needed for the plenum plate is shorter bolts. The bolts being too long actually bottom out and don't hold the plenum plate tight enough. Those bolts would be alot cheaper than the Hughes item.

      Any idea what size bolts😅

      @@DemonCowboy1911 Just shorter than the stock length. An 8th of an inch might be enough. Just have to try and see.

    Where are you located, and how much labor cost for you to do a 2001 Dakota 5.9..?

    Surprisingly my blown plenum gasket caused smoke on start up. I replaced the valve seals first thinking that'd forsure be the fix but definitely not

    Will the plenum gasket cause lack of power to the engine? My truck runs good. But it feels like when I'm on the highway won't respond even with the gas pedal on the floor. It goes on the speed but slow

      That could definitely be part of it. If your pulling oil into the combustion chamber you’re getting an inefficient burn which could be robbing you of some power

    How many miles on the engine? Mechanic said my intake manifold gasket needs to be done (for ~$3500). But, engine has 255k...

    • @SwanCanFixIt
      @SwanCanFixIt  Před 3 měsíci +1

      This engine had 206k miles on it when I did this. Should be able to get at least another 100k miles out of it now. $3,500 is probably not worth it if going that route with that many miles. If you do it yourself with the Hughes plenum kit and new coolant, that will only cost you about $250-$300. Not a super hard job just takes a solid weekend to do. Hopefully the video helps if you end up doing it yourself.

    Were your spark plugs fouling up before you changed this out? I have oil down there and have to change my spark plugs about every 4 months, and only the 4 on the right hand side lol

    Did it feel like the truck had a parachute attached before replacing the plenum gasket

    • @SwanCanFixIt
      @SwanCanFixIt  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, it definitely felt very sluggish when initially trying to accelerate like you are describing. I also did the spark plugs and wires while changing it out so that could have helped a lot, but overall after changing it out it feels a lot more responsive when accelerating.

    isnt the crank position sensor easier to get to with the engine stripped down? I've never changed one but heard its a shitty job.ting ready to do the hughes plenum replacement and bought a cps figuring it would be easy to.

    • @SwanCanFixIt
      @SwanCanFixIt  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, it would be much easier to get to it with it stripped down. I also thought about changing out the water pump and timing chain while I was at it given those would be easier to get at as well, but ended up putting that off for a later time. Good luck on changing everything! Hope the video helps!

    Did you have any performance issues you noticed before doing this?

    • @SwanCanFixIt
      @SwanCanFixIt  Před 4 měsíci

      I noticed that the truck was very sluggish when accelerating before changing it. Since then it seems to have a lot more power and it’s not burning oil anymore. It was burning about a qt of oil every 1000 miles.
