The "heading out west" is like a reference to the old west when people packed up their families to head out west to hunt for gold or settle land and start a farm.
As for the Internet, it actually is possible for it to "run out" in a sense, the Internet summed up is a giant global network, the physical cables that carry all the data from modem to modem can only handle a certain amount of data running through them at one time before they run out of capacity, at that point no more data can be processed so if there is more demand in number of people online then your "share" of the internet is "slowed down" (you get less speed) as it takes longer and longer to get the data from one end to the other and eventually it gets slow enough that web pages can't load, this is essentially what happens when a hacker or someone uses a D.D.O.S. attack against a company to take down their website, it hits them with more demand then they have supply for and it causes it to not work.

I remember watching this episode with my parents when I was like 17. And their reaction was like "you wouldn't survive without internet and we didn't even have it back in the day!"
I just looked at them and asked them if people nowadays would survive without cars (to get to their jobs so they can pay their bills), or without life support etc because this stuff didn't exist back in the day either.
Just because something didn't exist during your childhood doesn't mean that you don't have to rely on it in the future. I mean even if I would have grown up without internet I pretty much would *need* it today for my job.
So the reaction of the people in this episode wouldn't be so far fetched
8:18, the fact here is: even if the Internet doesnt run out, millions of people connecting to the same Wifi is a really big problem. A lot of people cannot connect to the net if there are too many already connected, and if they can connect, it will be super sloooow
Ppl underestimate the power of internet, its not just "its good, go out n touch grass type of situation". We in Australia just experienced a similar thing a few weeks ago. Optus the second biggest telco in Australia was down for like 12 hours. It was pretty chaotic, I work from home, n i couldnt get on internet, i cant call anyone, n i thought its my end, so i can tech support, nothing, cuz telco was down nationwide. I work in government, so i know alot of government service is down. Emergency call was not working, and someone literally could not see their dying mother, cuz the hospital could not contact the family. It was a big chaos.
Also, cant make credit card payment without internet. Thst was the one part i say is not accurate how randy was asked to pay with credit card

There's actually something even worse than you'd think about the "no internet" thing... ATMs, debit cards, credit cards, point-of-sale systems in stores... all use internet. So this is also over a week of almost everyone suddenly finding themselves without money.
Oh yea, not to mention if it's country-wide many infrastructure places would be impacted. Fire Departments, Police, 9/11, hospitals, water, electricity etc. I'm sure there are procedures in place to keep things running but realistically you would probably have to call in the National Guard to keep order until everyone gets things running again.

A long time ago I worked in tech support for some time .. I heard stories from friends, that you just automaticaly say "did you try turning it on and off again?" .. I didn't want to say that and treat every case individualy .. that lasted less than one day since 99% of all cases were solved with that .. and I always thought it was an urban myth, but around the 3rd case I had .. I asked everything, didn't have a clue what was wrong, so I decided to tell him to press the off button to force a shutdown .. and over the phone I heard the pc start up after the click of the button .. someone realy called tech support because the pc didn't work when not turned on ... I'll never forget the surprised tone in his "oh, now it works" .. after that .. well it's still the first thing I say when someone has any tech problem
The office computer I built one day suddenly lost it's Bluetooth functions (built into the motherboard), I rebooted it many times and it didn't come back, after weeks with no bluetooth I did a search that suggested physically unplugging the power supply from the wall and plugging it back in and it worked and hasn't every given us an issue since and that was several years ago at this point.

Web Developer here, to put it simply the physical structure of the internet is no different than a server room, only we have hundreds of them across the globe that hold much larger caches of data than any you see in a corporation or company. No one cache holds the entirety of the internet, instead they each hold a very large portion of the internet data for the sector it is located in. If this really happened I think I would be fine. So long as we had power and gas the country would really only die of boredom. I would spend my time drawing and painting all day long. Fun fact: the black n white scene is a reference to the Grapes of Wrath movie. A film about the Great Depression of the 1920s in the US.

Back in January, 2022, my government cut out the Internet nation wide.
Do to growing protests somewhere turning into unrest and riots.
The problem was that all civil and government organisations were transformed in digital format of service.
QR and card payments, salary payments, pension payments, public and private surveillance, etc. all stopped working without the Internet.
Even police departments were forced to call all ex-cops and ask for volunteers to patrol the streets. All because CTTV cameras were not working.
Wi-Fi did not worked, VPNs were not available, even cable and satellite television were out of service.
No wonder after 10 long days in blackout, our stupid government realised that by this decision they made more folks mad and increased numbers of protestors on streets.
And in a matter of hour cancelled blackout during day time and then completely.
I was unable to keep contact with most of my relatives and cannot work for 8 days.
And of course nobody compensated wasted nerves, time and money.
So, “yeah”, being disconnected from the Internet for too long is awful. Especially for residents of cities and town.
And countryside folks are no exception either. Even worst. My uncles crops were lost, because climate control on storage was discontinued for 5 days and everything, all food was lost.
This episode just reminds me of the show "The IT crowd" about a literal IT department. Every time they get a call, the first thing they say "Did you try turning it off and then back on again?" and Kyle unplugging and plugging it back in reminded me of that. XD

I love this episode. A simple subject turned on its head which causes everyone to overreact. Also a great Marsh family episode to see their dynamics with each other. Randy going to extremes every which way, Sharon as mediator trying to keep her family in line, Shelly being dramatic and beating up her little brother as she used to, and Stan’s role is simply to be son and sweet younger sibling that just wants the best for his family but cries out to mom when his sister is being unfair. It’s adorable, simple, and hilarious.
I went through a period where i didnt have internet for like a week about four months ago... I'm still playing catch up on the CZcams videos i missed during that period.

Guthrie had a lyric in a song “I’m a dust bowl refugee” …..anyway, nowadays everything relies on the internet ppl’s medical records, theyre ability to get prescriptions refilled, theyre ability to get & use money…..if our old, dilapidated power grid goes down, it’ll be a lot more fact than this.

a lack of internet has made me do some crazy things, October 18th 2023 when the Internet went off I got so bored, I literally walked an entire mile to Dollar General to buy an energy drink and a ramen, keep in mind I'm bordering 300 pounds and just walking a little bit makes my back hurt, so when I got back I could barely breathe, my toes were bleeding and my back felt like someone beat me with a metal baseball bat but to be honest.. I was proud of myself, i made a statement taking that long walk to get snacks, not only am I such a fat ass that I will do insane shit to get food but that I'm independent, I'm not a kid anymore, I can do great things if I try :)
The "Grapes of Wrath" adaptation to the modern world is brilliant! I've gotta watch "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" again at some point....maybe with some mashed potatoes and a fork.
I thought I had cut my YT Inet addiction back. Then my phone broke last week. 10 days without it, I for reals lost my shit for a couple days. And I beat heroin way back when. I think the world would be better without it. But if the internet just suddenly vanished tomorrow? People would freak out.

@@zulunet3285 I drive my car at the end of dirt road and walk 30 kilometres into the forest and there I am. But seriously it's like quitting smoking. First 4 days are the hardest. After that you don't need any of it. Helps also that I've been doing that over 20 years.
