I baught the "10 rules of castings" by JC after watching your videos. I have started reading the book and this video is kind of execution of the principles I am reading !!!!!! Thank you for making me understand the principles better , through actual pouring. Thank you .

The video was Too short! It did seem like your feeder was oversized for the part but what do I know. Strangulation definitely adds a new edge, your subscribers should increase.

The feeder was indeed over-sized, but I'm not sure that it was that much too big. (awesome prose there) There are formulas for calculating the volume of the feeder (which I don't know and didn't use) but I do know that you want the feeder to be larger than the area it is feeding so that it will freeze after the part. Bottom line, the part didn't have any shrink in it so it was perfect 😀😀
I'm aiming for 10 minutes or less for all of the videos in this series. The one that will be out next week has a lot of info packed into that window. In subsequent videos in the series I address one aspect at a time so even though they are short, they should be relatively thorough.

Ha, mate I'd not done a cast for a while, and when I did I made some dumb ass mistakes.
It didn't help I was trying to do a video at the same time but it's really no excuse for the grey mater being slow!!!

I was told one to "not experiment on camera" meaning do it once to make sure it's going to work before you go to the trouble of recording it. I always feel like "yeah but what if it works the first time? I'd have to do it all over again for the camera" :-D
I tend not to have the luxury of time to do it twice, so that's why my videos tend to look a bit rough and ready. Oh that & I am always in a bloody hurry!!!

Wow Perry truely looking forward to this series! Good to see you back at it. I have to learn a lot, I had exactly that bubbling in my last sand cast. I have my doubts on my sand ramming technique (can you ram it up too hard? And does the moisture in the sand and the thus starting of bubbling do any Harm to the cast?) And I have strong doubts about my feeder, venting and channel technique. I was thinking about adding tin cans aswell to give more head pressure. A lot of questions I hope this series will answer!
How funny that you ask "can I ram my sand too hard?" I asked that same question in my video coming out today. I expect you can. Next week's video is on ramming sand. I'll do a couple of experiments before that video comes out to see if ramming too hard is a problem.
I haven't started on the gating video nor have I done anything regarding the practice of using tin cans. Suffice it to say, I'm not a big fan of adding height to the sprue. I have never needed more "head pressure" in anything I've cast.
So much to cover so little time :-D

He’s a good guy. We’ve been friends for some time now. We met going challenges with another channel two years ago.
Looks good. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Might make some of my own how-to videos as, having done this for several years now, I feel like I’m finally allowed to have an opinion.
I’ve referenced John and Bob both in a backyard metalcasting Facebook group I help admin. I almost feel like we need to start with the super basics like defining casting, the various techniques (beyond sandcasting as lots of people are doing investment and some even have asked about permanent molds) and even talk about water-bonded greensand versus oil-bonded/petrobond, sand grain details (sharp versus round, natural versus synthetic, grain/mesh size, southern/western bentonite, green strength versus hot strength, permeability, etc... you could do a whole video just on sand...). For me, I’d like to see the calculations laid out for the correct dimensions for the tapered sprue... I know Bob did a video when he was in a tent in the woods on a napkin about gravity, velocity, drop distance, diameters, etc, but I guess I need to go back and watch it again and take better notes. Been doing bottom feeding with spin traps per John lately with some of my iron castings and it definitely helped the porosity. Keep up the good work!!! Welcome back.

I have a video on the sprue that should be out in three weeks. I'm going to talk about the mechanics of the falling liquid. I've had Professor Campbell look at my early work and he has confirmed that I'm pretty close. I'll share a way that allows people to generate a shape. I'm not planning on getting into volumetric flow rates. I doubt that any of the backyard/garage people know or care about that. Most of our pours can easily be handled with a sprue the size of the one I use.
You're right, sand could easily be an entire video. I think the audience for such a video is small, like a few hundred people that might care. Most people really don't care and are really just looking to see metal poured from a crucible. Most have no intention of casting anything or taking the time to get better. That's perfectly fine, it just makes the audience that is interested pretty small
Troye, We definitely "need to start with the super basics like defining casting" especially with some people. I often ask people to explain things to me as though I don't know anything. IT helps keep everyone on the same page and using the same terminology in the same way,

I really enjoy your video series on learning to cast metal. It sums up your latest thoughts on the subject. I noticed that you changed crucible tongs from your original design. Please go over your new design. I also recall you saying that you used a #6 crucible. I would like to hear your thoughts on crucible selection: size to pick, things to avoid, how to pre-treat before use, borax coating, expected life of a crucible used only for Al, etc...
Hi,
There isn't a lot to talk about regarding the "shank" I use to hold the crucible while pouring. It's actually pretty standard in the industry. Just a ring that I heated and bent into a circle-ish shape that holds the crucible about 2/3rd of the way up.
Regarding crucible, get whatever size fits your furnace. You want about 1 inch minimum clearance around the crucible. More would be better as you really don't want the flame pointing directly at the crucible. That will do as much damage as anything. Flame should encircle the crucible.
I never treat my crucibles. I have never used borax and see no reason to. I've seen crucibles that are treated fall apart long before mine have. I generally heat it slightly the first time by putting it in the furnace and running the flame for 10-15 seconds. Just enough to get it warm but not hot. I'll do that for a few cycles just to make sure there isn't any moisture in it. After that I just turn the flame on and start melting.
I use the same crucible for bronze and aluminum. I always pull any thing left in the crucible out before I heat it so I start with a clean one. This will include crud in the bottom and any "skin" left on the walls. I just toss that stuff as all oxides and crap and I don't want any of that in my pour.
If you're just doing aluminum (something low temp) I would expect and untreated crucible to last 100 melts or more. If you get in to brass or bronze it requires much more heat and you'll start to see vitrification happening. It's a glassy like surface on the crucible. I would expect far fewer bronze melts than aluminum melts.

@@paradug Good question. I do still use the old "tongs" I built. I need to make a proper set of tongs that allow me to lift it out the furnace without bending over so much.
