Incredibly interesting video. I adore the Amber chronicles, but I understand why you bounced off of it. What's so interesting is that a lot of your complaints are actually part of why I love the books so much. For example, the whole thing of the protagonist hiding his amnesia being "too cute" is why it works. His sibling CAN tell he's on bullshit, but that's the expected norm for them. What causes them to assume he's a genius is that the situation is so absurd and unexpected that they can't guess why he's behaving the way he is, and if they can't even guess why he's on bullshit then there MUST be something he knows that they don't. Or the alternating between old style courtly speech and modern slang. It happens because these characters are ANCIENT. They've seen so many generations of mankind come and go and fade away that they're an amalgamation of everything they've experienced. There's a LOT of reading between the lines the reader is expected to do, and I understand that that's not for everyone, but man, it really works for me.

Wow. Did we even read the same books? I love the two Amber series, one of the few I've read twice. Even have the Amber Diceless RPG, which is... interesting.
Where to start? The characters are thousands of years old, are essentially immortal, and are on the level of superheroes or demi-gods. Yes, they can do amazing things. (Zelazny frequently writes about super powerful characters, just look at Lord of Light.) They are all family members so there will be some similarity but still there is enough difference between them. There are also lots of old grudges and interpersonal relationships going on that we aren't privy to.
Yes, Corwin starts with amnesia, apparently he's had it for a couple hundred years, but he loses that about half way through the first book so it's not much of a problem. The reason he can keep it a secret is because these family members all have many secrets and they are quite used to everyone hiding everything. Yes, most, probably all of them have been kings and queens and presidents, multiple times in other places. That's not what they want however. They want to be King/Queen of Amber. It's their home. Imagine growing up in Maine, you love it, it's home. Sure you can be King in Florida, or California, or Kansas or North Dakota, but it's not home and you don't care much. So I don't see that a plot hole.
Why do they have these powers? It's complicated but suffice it to say that Grandfather stole a piece of a god and with it created a huge design that sits in the cellars of Castle Amber. Walking that design, The Pattern, can either kill you or energize you enough to cross between the multiverse worlds, the Shadows. Thus the multiverse is open to them and they use that ability wildly. Plus there is magic and psychic powers, high and low technology and the Trump cards (communication and teleportation devices.) Anything, any world, any possibility is out there in the shadows somewhere.
Don't remember anything about dinosaurs and cars driving backwards. Been a few years since I last read it, but I simply don't recall any of that. I'll take your word for it that those are there.
Zelazny can be a wild and crazy writer, again look at Lord of Light. There is much in the series which is wild and crazy and I don't say it's all great. But the good outweighs the bad, for me.

Wait....the only pre-1980 books that Matt likes is Lord of the Rings?
So, no Robert Howard, no Lieber, no Alan Dean Foster (the early years), no Dragonriders of Pern, no early Moorcock (Elric/Corum/Hawkmoon)?
Yeah, I can see why the Amber books were a no-go, then. It's a shame, there's some great fantasy out there that was written before 1980, but taste is a tricky thing, especially when it comes to fantasy and science-fiction....

Man I'm so surprised you were missing out on an amazing story and a series. The big book of Amber is really just two storylines the first five books was written in the '70s or the '80s and then about 7 years later he finished with the last five books The first books are the father and the second books are the son of the main character. And yes these were written at a time when there weren't full comprehensive compilations of books so each book is in itself a complete story and he doesn't always follow chronologically how the you know the previous books worked but I think that's some of the charm of the last name and the Amber series I would give this a second chance please

It’s not that uncommon for award winners not to stand up over time. At that time, I was heavily into SF, as were my friends. None of us would have ranked Zelazny that highly.
Your comparison to Malazan doesn’t work. You read, at the most, 20% of this series. How much of the Malazan world is explained by the end of Deadhouse Gates. It’s possible that everything you say is not explained gets explained. Remember, an important plot element in Gardens is the Azath House, which gets introduced as a kind of Deus ex Machina. I’ve read the series three times, and I still am not sure I understand Azath houses.

I find it odd that someone who reviews fantasy books has so much trouble with the idea of parallel worlds.
I would not force you to read something you dislike but you read the first book and stopped. Now you are complaining that you don’t understand what’s happening. It’s like reading the Fellowship of the Ring and complaining that the story leaves you hanging.

As the jack@$$ who put this on his raffle 😅, I loved this review. It’s been about 25 years since reading it and I remember really liking it. Matt’s hatred of it still brought back some positive nostalgia and his rants are always very entertaining! Matt - sorry to recommend something you hated, but thanks for giving it a go with an honest review and a raw, hilarious take! 😂😂

My bad I forgot you perpetrate like you are a reader while listening to audiobooks. I guess acting like you are closing up a book you just finished reading is part of the act. Aaannnddd I’m done

@@user-nt7ni2xd8h lol what are you talking about. I read this on Kindle, and that thing you see in the video is a kindle. It has a leather cover.
I don't pretend I read a book when I listen. When I listen I literally take my headphones off when the video starts.
      Troll somewhere else bro

If I was trolling I would comment on how clueless or how compromised you are having kings of the wild and a 5 warrior angel book both in your top 10 all time. All credibility is lost right there.

It's ALMOST like different people have different opinions on what literature they enjoy! Such a silly concept!

A Johnny come lately to fantasy, who probably doesn’t even read just listens to audiobooks, giving a 1 star rating to a fantasy classic. How rich.
