  • Do you know what to do if a stranger approached you? Stranger Danger is REAL! Let’ Learn all about it with another Wellness 101 Junior.
A stranger is someone you don’t know...period. There are two types of strangers...GOOD STANGERS and BAD STRANGERS.
A GOOD STRANGER is a someone you can ask for help if you need it. These folks are pretty recognizable and can include: Police Officers, Fire Fighters, a parent with a child, or a teacher.
A BAD STRANGER is a person who tries to get you to do something without your parent’s permission. Be on the lookout for the 7 most common stranger traps:
HELPING: I lost my little puppy can you help me find him?
BRIBING: I was just playing my daughter’s video game...if you come over to my car I’ll let you play it.
FAMOUS: Hey kid...we are making a CZcams video over there...if you come with me I’ll make you famous.
JOB: Hey little kid, I’ll give you 10 bucks if you carry my bag to the car for me
BUDDY: Hey kid, you look like you could use a buddy. I can teach you how to hit a homerun...come on it’ll be fun!
EMERGENCY: Hey kid, you’re mom was in an accident at work....she sent me to come get you...you need to come with me right now!
SECRET: If you tell anyone about our little secret, I’m gonna hurt your dog!
Remember gang, children should NEVER be asked to keep special secrets from their parents and an adult should not need a child’s help without their parents too. It’s ok to say no!
Now that we know the difference between GOOD and BAD Strangers, it’s important to learn a few simple stranger safety rules.
WALK WITH A BUDDY - Bad strangers target kids who are alone. Walking with a buddy will help you stay safe.
DON’T ANSWER THE DOOR - No matter how believable, do not answer the door for anyone you don’t know. Bad strangers will tell you all kinds of things to get you to open the door like “I work with your mom” or “Free squishmellows...get your free squishmellows!”. If you don’t know them, go get your trusted adult and have them answer the door.
MEMORIZE - Knowing your mom & dad’s real names, address, and phone number can help a good stranger get you safely back to mom or dad.
YELL RUN AND TELL - If someone tries to force you to go with them, yell as loud as you can, “This is not my dad!” and then run and tell your parents or another good stranger right away.
That’s it kids...STRANGER DANGER is real and knowing the difference between good strangers and bad strangers can make all the difference in the world. It’s also a good idea to come up with a secret code word that only you and your family knows. So the next time a stranger approaches you and you ask what is the secret code word...if they don’t know it...YELL RUN AND TELL just like Wellbee here! Until next time this is Mr. Wellness saying be well, and follow the steps to a SAFER you!
