  • Mirkwood, once called Greenwood the Great and later named Eryn Lasgalen, was a great forest of Middle-earth, mightiest of all in the later days of the world. Today, we explore that region and its history! Please let me know your thoughts on the history of Mirkwood in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I do imagine a silly scenario, the Silvan Elves really didn't have much to do in the Years of the Trees and First Age, so thinking of a Silvan Elf. You live under a never changing night for an age and then all of a sudden BOOM, the Sun just appears, you have no idea what it is, why it is there or what it does only it makes everything brighter and it hurts to look at it, then after a few hours it sets, and you a back to night and you are very confused, but then the next few hours, the Sun rises again and it burns and confuses you more, you wonder if it's here to stay this time. The poor Silvan Elves, they probably spent the first months if not Years just screaming in fear of this great big Sun showing up.

I always think of what Bilbo says about wanting to go on another adventure. "I meant to go back… wander the paths of Mirkwood…". In my mind, Mirkwood represents an idea of almost infinite escapism, you could go in and get lost just wandering for the remainder of your days.

Wood Elves are probably my favorites. The scene with the two getting drunk and allowing Bilbo to steal the keys and the banter over the heavy barrels makes them more like the merry people Tolkien wrote about rather than the washed out shadows of the movies.I am not sure they would all leave, perhaps they went wandering and found new woods in distant places after Sauron's influence was gone. After all Tolkien hints that there were lands unknown to the people we hear about in LOTR.Were there distant woods like the Russian taiga, perhaps?Places where few Men had ever set foot?

It is always interesting to me that the Avari never came west, but there is a forest in Beleriand that houses Avari. Maybe these were escapees from Angband or perhaps servants of Morgoth. Correction, Legolas would become the most renowned elf ever. Like every super hero is based off the mythology of Superman, Legolas has defined what we think elf is. So much so he has an emoji🧝🏻‍♂️. I’m cherry picking yes, but I think too many people sleep on Legolas’s impact on the world of fantasy, and it’s just like Tolkien to slip in that the most famous elf, is also the least impressive in his elven hierarchy. would they have followed? Ungoliant saw Morgoth as more of a temporay ally of convenience, I'd imagine her descendants would be much the same toward Sauron

If like the bible most of the language of Tolkien is metaphoric, trees are people or races/families then truly or world is Mirkwood atm.

Probably not, Tolkien disliked direct allegory like that. That was more of CS Lewis’ sort of thing.
