The Police - 1984 NZ Tour (RARE!!)

  • The Police were one of the hottest groups on planet earth when they arrived in NZ for a one-off show at Western Springs stadium in early 1984. The concert was marred by riotous headline-making disorder after many punters piled though a torn-down fence into the stadium, stretching the resources of their local namesakes. In this rare clip, the three band members of The Police reveal their musical aspirations and ponder the future of the group...enjoy!

    wow this was really great footage and interviews, as popular as they are people really still don't appreciate how musically talented each one of them are. On top of Sting's thoughtful and rich lyrics , their command of their instruments or chops so to speak are second to none. Stewart may be the best rock drummer of all time. I can listen to all three of them talk all day long , so focused and well spoken, god I miss the 80's LOL

    You can tell Andy HATED the idea of the back-up singers, as he had also disliked the addition of brass to the Ghost tour. He was right on both counts. I think the coolest thing about the 2007 reunion was the fact that they did it as a 3 piece again. The fact that three guys could create such a full and original sound was part of what made them so special.

      obviously all the changes that were happening correspond to what happened then, especially with Sting (he recorded the Brass on Gosth and the choirs were done and at Police the choirs on many topics are very important for the musical phrases), he wanted that the sound will evolve, the show also, ... it was possible to see what came (here the separation is already appreciated) and definitely if, with the sound of today and the new arrangements the tour of 07-08 maybe it was the best concerts of them, leaving aside the first two years that were "something else"

      There was MTV. They got a lot of coverage on MTV when The Synchronicity Tour began. The played Every Breath You Take constantly on MTV. Yet they were HOT from their very first LP. Sting had a voice that was as amazing as if is now yet he was much nicer back then and now he is somewhat a SNOB. Stewart Copeland was always full of himself with a cocky attitude. They kicked ass with LP's year after year and THAT was AMAZING!!! Outlandos d'Amour (1978)Reggatta de Blanc (1979)Zenyatta Mondatta (1980)Ghost in the Machine (1981) Check out their The Police Around the World Tour (1977-80) and you will be pleasantly pleased. Just very cool with so much energy & personality. Sting was sexy as hell. I just never saw what he saw in Trudie Styler yet it was enough that he left his first wife. His son Joseph has his dads singing voice and he also looks like his dad. Check his old band out; Fiction Plane.

    Following on from my "newzealandpromoter" channel comments - as nice as it is to see this - it's also a sort of tragedy - have just checked with TVNZ (the broadcaster) and most of this segment has *not been archived* by the broadcaster. So now it only exists online in.... gasp... *240p* (whyyyyyyyyyyyy in this day and age). A tear-worthy tragedy :( Lesson, people: *Never* throw away your VHS tapes until the material has been properly digitized.

      +newzealandpromoter thank you for the tip! Also, are you by chance the New Zealand promoter that Stewart mentions as Sting sings Roxanne in Tokyo on one of the videos shot in early 1981?
      As I recall, Sting was getting pneumonia because someone hadn't closed a door to the back of the stage.
      Sting felt they should shut the door,
      as Stewart sang,
      "for the sake of the New Zealand promoter..."

    • @newzealandpromoter

      I'm not that promoter as such, but well done for identifying the reference point - which is completely correct! One of my favourite "Roxanne" performances and one of the first I ever got to know as a Police fanatic.

      @jasonlefler3456 Před 8 lety

      +newzealandpromoter Nice! I was always hunting down video and audio from Police tours and that one reference stood out by a mile! It always seemed that they missed a golden opportunity to release a live DVD box set showing each stage of their concert career.
      It could've started with Hatfield Polytechnic 1979 and ended with Shea Stadium 1983 or even a bit beyond that show.
      People forget what a special group they were, especially in concert.

      +Jason Lefler Sting Stew and Andy all have clips from there shows from Day 1 to the last shows. Like for example, Sting has clips from years ago and he has them locked away. Stew recently pulled out a clip of Wrapped Around Your Finger's performance from the June 6th, 2007 performance in Seattle recently for an interview, and Andy used bits from the Cormiskey Park show from July 23rd, 1983 for his movie CSLY, Surviving the Police, so all the shows are all still around but of course we will probally never see em
