  • Hello everyone! Welcome back to my CZcams channel. The Cumbria Way - 73 Miles from Ulverston to Carlisle.
    Just over a week after completing the Dales Way I decided to get back out and take myself on another adventure and long-distance hike and decided on the Cumbria Way. This time I would be solo and planned to do this over 4 days, however as you will see from the video series I mangled to smash this in 3 days which I'm so pleased with.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this hike and had fantastic weather throughout, very similar to my last videos on the Dales Way.
    This walk would certainly test me both physically and mentally and would be sore by the end but it's all about the journey....and this was fantastic.
    If you want any more information on the hike or gear or anything else please do leave a comment below and I will get back to you.
    I hope you guys enjoy my videos and find them helpful. Cheers Brad. Both great walks. I’d say the Cumbria Way has more views as obviously passing through the heart of the lakes but the Dales it’s also a really nice walk and I’d say the latter is an easier walk. Both 4-5 day trails or longer if you want. Whichever you do you’ll be happy with them and they’re both good starters. I’ll look to do a gear video as I took similar across the 2 walks and it worked well. Thanks Brad

      That’s awesome to hear thank you. You’ll love it I really recommend it. You can take it a much steadier pace and get the most out of it. Maybe aim for 15 miles a day when you tackle it which is a good benchmark. It’s not too bad on the height this one until later into the walk so just need to get some miles under your belt to strengthen your legs and feet. Really appreciate the feedback thank you.

      Aah really? Thats ace I love it. To be fair I do that when I find series of hikes. I don’t watch TV and haven’t for nearly 5 years but watch CZcams all the time. I’m based in Manchester too. Cumbria way is easy to get to from here. Train straight to Ulverston from Bolton then from the end you can get a train from Carlisle with one chance back again
obviously they start from Manchester but for me it was easier to drive to Bolton as free parking on some streets nearby

    In two minds whether my next long-distance walk will be the CW or CtC. The latter looked brutal and I don't want to get hurt. By the way, I finished the Dales Way in four days :) The Altras are perfect and your maps were essential. Saw the place where we both made a mistake in that nettle-filled little peninsula on the final day and had to turn back. That middle section of moorland was pathetic but overall the walk was awesome. On day two I decided to wait until the pub in Oughtershaw to get something to eat because it was the last place for 23 miles. When I arrived there was a big sign on the wall saying the chef wasn't in that day. I could have ripped them a new arsehole. By the way, you're 43? That's the same age as me, lol.
    Kris, what's next? Any chance of doing the Cape Wrath Trail? Or how about Glenfinnan to Inverie?

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave  Pƙed 9 měsĂci +1

      Awesome work well done! It’s a brilliant hike isn’t it and 4 days is good going. Oh I feel your pain arriving with no pub grub at the end. I had a similar experience on the C2C. It’s popular and most places needed you to book in so lots of places couldn’t get food.
      The C2C is an awesome hike it really is. But
maybe do another to warm into it. Obviously not much time to get that one in as much better when the days are longer but still time.
      The CW is a great hike too, plus it’s around the Lakes so will take in some great views. Take your time on it and you can take some higher routes here and there too. I really enjoyed it. The only section which isn’t that interesting is toward to finish in Carlisle but apart from that loved it.
      Cape Wrath is on my hit list for sure. Itll be next year for me though for that. Not sure I’ll get many long distance hikes in now this year but will see.

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave  Pƙed rokem

      Thank you. Yes that’s right. Just go past the stream and follow the rail keeping the stream to your left and if I remember rightly you then go to the right (which is in my video) and does uphill with a view to the hills to your right.
      Just be careful as you get to the road at the top, you take the right through the wall and walk through the field, you don’t go onto the road.
      Good luck with the wall it’s a cracker

      Aah brill thanks Daniel. You know what, I’ve decided against the coast to coast again now this year. With my redundancy and me needing to plan starting a business and getting something up and running I just can’t dedicate 11-12 days to this again plus all the editing. I’ll have a look at some shorter multi day. Keep me posted on yours. You all sorted for it?

      @danielcalveley Pƙed rokem +1

      @@krisgleave Ah that's a shame you won't be attempting it but as you say got to get your priorities right and do what's best for you. The walk will still be there next year after all.
      I probably haven't put as much training in as I would've liked if I'm being honest Kris so no doubt I'm in for a rude awakening next week! Hopefully be able to dig deep and get through it đŸ€ž
      Will keep you posted.

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave  Pƙed rokem +1

      I’m sure you’ll get through it. I didn’t train either and hardly walked at all before I went. I had shinsplints for 6 weeks prior too so didn’t even walk anywhere. Just take your time and don’t rush I think that’s key. Get your shoes off when you can and get some air to your feet. Yeah a shame I have to skip it but it’s take up about 16 days of my time including edited and just don’t really have that. I think you should get alright weather too
everything crossed for you.

    Navigating on your Garmin watch each day, did you find you had to charge it up or did it last?

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi Will, I charged the watch each evening. Typically it would last for 2 days for around 8hrs solid GPS tracking but I like to charge each night so I start with 100% rather than risk it running out the following day. They charge quickly so it’s fine. I’ve used the watch for over 2 years on every hike including my 11 day coast to coast and worked flawlessly. This is the Garmin 6X Pro so biggest battery.

      @@krisgleave Thanks for the reply. Just about to do the Dales Way as a first long(ish) distance hike. I have the Garmin Instinct Solar and just weighing up to plan on charge it and use activity tracking/navigation or just track it as a expedition. If sun is good it may not even need a charge though.

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave  Pƙed rokem

      No worries at all. I’ve never used the Expedition mode as I like accurate tracking along the whole route. For the sake of a small cable I’d just doing the standard tracking and navigation and just top up your charge at night. You could probably get 2 days as you have solar and nicer to have the data.
