The second and the fourth are my favorite Schumann symphonies. Being based in Buffalo, NY, from 1987-1995, we used to drive to Cleveland often on weekends to hear the CSO during its heydays under Christoph von Donanhyi.

Lucky you. I was lucky enough to have just Robert Conrad and the WFMT Fine Arts Network. Btw, what ever happened to Yak Ya Ling (spelling?). Heard him lead the Cleveland in the late 1980's in I think the Schumann 2, though he may have been a stand in for Dohnanyi?

Btw, does 90 continue West after the Thruway ends? Into Cleveland? The Cleveland was always my favorite American orchestra and for most of the last 25 years I've lived in Cayuga County.

I remember this concert. Peter Serkin replaced Maurizio Pollini in the Brahms 2. I remember his hands were trembling and wondering if it was nerves or essential tremor or alcohol for essential tremor. He died not that many years ago. I liked his mozart and bach growing up, and though he and Carlos Kleiber and Jack Nicholson could've made a sequel to Easy Rider.

Would like to hear one concert of such level more often these days. Fabulous wind playing but the whole orchestra is so splendid. I like the tonal beauty, the discipline and the unbelievable transparency, still audible in this copy, in the seemingly most difficult passages. The finale seems to convey the elan and noblity of Mendelssohn's opening movement in his Italian Symphony. The famed second golden era of Cleveland orchestra with Maestro Dohnanyi seems eloquent live. Amazing concert from my amateur, not very experienced point of hearing.
