Ray Billings is the father of Last Rites, and approached building this robotic deathlord somewhat simply: make a giant weapon and attach a tough drivetrain to shove it at your opponent. Brute force has no better friend.

I have multiple weapon bars of different sizes and materials. The longer ones (like this one) actually don't perform all that well in the arena - lots of power but sometimes unstable after a big hit. But for this filming I knew that nothing was going to be hitting back :) The S7 steel ones I routinely use are only about 36 inches or so. Thanks for your interest!

I remembered doing the math at one point, but redid it here just because :) Motor RPM is 4620. Gearing is 14/24 which works out to actually 2695 rpm. Weapon bar length is 48". This ends up at 385 mph at the tip, so just a tad under the 400. Fresh off the charger the batteries will be slightly higher than nominal, so total rpm is briefly higher as well. These are "theoretical" figures that do not take into account friction losses, which probably aren't a lot but is definitely not zero either.
This particular weapon bar is made out of 7075 aluminum, with 4140 chrome molly steel teeth. I actually have several different styled weapon bars, that I will alternate depending on the specific opponent I am facing.
Did you ever make one with pointed ends rather then blades?
The trailing edge of the bar is angled off to reduce wind drag. The aluminum bar is 1.5 inches thick, so it creates a LOT of air movement. The slight chamfering of the bar allows it to spin a little faster, and uses less battery power in the process. It's just more efficient
1/2 lexan is the material that the arena itself uses. It can most certainly be penetrated, but not easily. And since I built the steel support this lexan is mounted to, I know that it can't just fall over. I took the safety of this shoot very seriously, and made sure that no one was hurt.
Well they certainly have come a long way from Blendo's 80mph dome to Last Rites' 400mph bar.
remember the terror that was ziggo? that little monster was just a frying pan turned upside down over a couple drill motors with some junk attached to it ^_^ it was probably one of the cheapest bots at the competition.
really it was a Wok but apparently a lot of people don't know what those are because I've gotten confused responses every other time I've mentioned it.
Drive motors, weapon motors, electronics, batteries - lots of stuff can break and its all expensive :) Trying to be the leading edge of kinetic energy in the heavyweight class can put a strain on your wallet for sure.
At the 6:09 mark, you can see we are all behind a lexan enclosure. It is not up to the standards of a full on arena, but it is 1/2" thick lexan built on to a substantial steel frame. Everyone not essential was out of the area completely, and the few people who were needed were completely out of line of any shrapnel/debris.

Last Rites is a very good heavyweight class combat robot, but the truth is there are many very good machines competing. I win more matches than I lose, but there are many top level bots that can and have beaten me. And you never know what new machines will show up at any event. It's a very competitive field!
Do you still think it's possible to build competent middleweight robots for ~$1000? Back when I was young machines looked to be in that range on TV but nowadays things seem much more high tech
What a blast from the past! I remember being 8 or 9 and watching Battlebots whenever it came on. Because of that, I've been wanting to build one of these bots for years now. I've taken notes on every fight I could find on youtube and made a complete design off of that, I just never ended up raising the money to do it, though I did get certified in CNC programming so I'd be able to make some awesome stuff when I do. Call me obsessed, but people like Ray are my heroes. Keep on breaking stuff man!

It seems more like a zombie crawler factory, that thing could destroy multiple feet and ankles in an instant if you drive it by some zombie hordes.

Biohazard and Vlad were both destroyed by lesser spinners many years ago. I've had to fix the arena damage from Last Rites it hits way harder and it's finally became more reliable. The current heavyweight robots are many times stronger than the one's from Battlebots. They have to be... This thing slices/melts through 1/2 inch thick Steel...!

Ray, i noticed it. But 1/2" thick lexan is not strong enough. Last Rites can go straight true it.. Also the lexan is not attached to any thing. so it would fall over..

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it is not, it is like over-volting a CPU, giving it more power, over-clocking makes it run faster, you can make the golf cart motor run faster but you need to over-volt it because of the way the motor works, a CPU gets X power and runs at Y clock speed.but X and Y are not as intertwined as the golf cart motor is, the clock speed can be raised without the voltage being raised but it gets unstable after a certain point (different per CPU chip), it would be like the golf cart motor needing (not correct volts but a fare example) 3 volts to go at the max 3kph but it can go max 5kph with some tinkering at 3 volts and it then has a 1/10 chance of breaking down every kilometre.
TL;DR, over-volt lets the max run more stable and overclock lets it run faster but not necessarily staying stable

Vlad the Impaler was destroyed at Battlebots by Mechavore... David has Vladiator it used to be a Super Heavy... I actually fought against it at Battlebots 4.0 I think... That was a long time ago, on an island in a bay, by a city with a pyramid.
Seeing it destroy a bowling ball scared me quite a bit. Imagine it going after your ankles.

I wonder if a superheavyweight version of a heavyweight bot would beat it. Also the answer is tombstone dies, if something can facetank lastrites/tombstone or can continously rush it, then it has zero chance, sewer snake is a good example

Last rites briefly ran under the name tombstone for the planned to be televised 2009 pro championship of battlebots but it never aired
And I’m 2015 a whole new bot named tombstone was finally built to honor the original super heavyweight

Nah, Neither competed in Robot Wars. Last Rights is 30lb lighter than Tombstone, made to compete at a different weight class. Two different machines.

Okamifan1 TheStreamer tip: The proper way of disposing of a CRT TV is by using it until it dies then throw it away or put it in front of tombstone to shred it! Don't immediately grab it and destroy it until you know it's useless.
