    The likelihood of dying in a plane crash depends entirely on when the plane crashed, if the plane crashed on takeoff or landing then the likelihood of survival is actually present if not fantastic. The likelihood of surviving a plane crash in any other circumstance is basically nil. The likelihood of surviving a car crash is greater than 80% as almost all ground-vehicle collisions are not even injurious rather less lethal, however lethal car crashes happen a lot more often than any kind of plane crash(see: frequency of automotive travel + average skill of drivers vs frequency of air travel vs average skill of pilots).
    So you're less likely to be involved in a plane crash but if that does happen you'll probably die. On the upside, fatalities from car crashes are usually neither instantaneous nor clean whereas most people that die in plane crashes tend to die instantly or at the very least very quickly.

    For 97 percent of people to be surviving plane crashes, they must have included instances where planes get off the runway for only a very short time before having to put down again as 'crashes'.

    • @Dorianin1
      @Dorianin1 Před 6 lety +6

      Hardly. Planes are designed quite carefully to be able to have the passenger cabin protect passengers in case of a crash. As well, very few crashes are high speed impacts. Modern airplanes have at least a 300 to 1 glide ratio.

    • @hisredrighthand5212
      @hisredrighthand5212 Před 2 lety

      Still, maybe I'm not fully awake yet, but I would think if there is a 1:1.2 million chance of having a plane crash and then over 96% of passengers survive a plane crash - let's say 95% for the sake of argument here - wouldn't that mean the probability *D* of dying in a plane crash is a*b, where *a* ist the probability of your plane crashing and *b* is the probability of dying whilst in that plane crash?
      So that would make (1/1.2m)*(1/20)=1/24m, so 1 in 24 million? What am I doing wrong here?

    I'm not fully awake, but I would think: If you take a plane somewhere and the probability *a* of being in a plane crash is 1/(1.2m) = 0.000000832. And if the probability *b* of not surviving a plane crash is 1 - 0.967 = 0.033. Then intuitively I'd think the probability of dying in a plane crash *c* would be *c* = a * b = 0.000000832 * 0.033 = 0.000000027456, i.e. 1 in 27.5 million. What am I doing wrong?
