- ABRSM 2023 & 2024 - Grade 8 Piano exam - A:2 Allegro 1st Movement Sonata in F, K. 332 ~ W. A. Mozart
Mozart's three piano sonatas K. 330-332 are among his most popular keyboard works. They were composed in the period 1781-3, possibly during a visit to Salzburg. In view of Mozart's flair for opera, it is not surprising that this Allegro is operatic in its sudden changes of mood, from the gently lyrical (starting at bars 1 and 41) to the stormy (bars 22 and 56).

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 120 crotchet bpm and this piece has been performed to a similar tempo.
This piece is mainly to be played legato, and care is needed to play expressively, but the true skill is being able to execute the numerous slurs correctly, so as to create a light and elegant sound, in keeping with the Viennese Classical style. The main trick is to play the last note of each slur lighter, which helps to add elegance and finesse to the phrases.
Be careful not to over-use the sustain pedal in this piece - it’s very easy to fall into a habit of pedalling almost every bar in order to “romanticise it” - don’t! I had to keep reminding myself that this piece does not need to loose it’s clarity of melody and with a good legato touch it will work surprisingly well with little pedal added. Remember this is not the music of later Romantic composers such as Chopin!
There are a few bars where staccato wedges are written - bars 14, 28, 41, etc.. and these were often used in the late 18th Century by Haydn and Mozart to indicate normal staccato, as opposed to staccatissimo - however I chose to play them quite short and crisp which makes for a nice contrast.
Dynamics are straightforward.
I played this for grade 8 back in the 80s, except it was the whole sonata all 3 movements back then.
It was way harder back then.
Marvelous! Without you, I wouldn’t be able to get through Grade 8. Thank you Master Keys!😊😊😊
I’m loving your wonderful comments and I’m so pleased that you have found these videos useful!! 😁👍👍👍
Only channel where tempo is kept the same throughout because in other channel's videos the tempo changes. Thank you.
Thanks so much, I generally try to keep from straying from the starting tempo, unless the piece requires it and I’m so glad you appreciate this and thanks for watching!
@@masterkeyz959excellent playing loverly Sonata, iam humbly speaking a self taught pianist I've been playing the piano since I was 15yrs old I am 53yrs old now, so playing for 38yrs, can I ask please a question, iam currently learning to play the k 331 Mozart, today i played the theme and 6 variations as well as the rondo alla turca,,the other day I managed the menutto and trio, but iam a little bit confused with where to use pedal, I have a Casio wk 3000 keyboard with sustain pedal, if able to answer I will be very gratefull, also I did humbly speaking managed to sight read this sonata the k 332 1st movement also A little while ago, it was a bit patchy with a few wrong notes, but i am humbly pleased with my progress, I am determined to improve this sonata like I've managed today with the k 331 and k 545, greetings from wales uk 😀

*Turns another page*
Oh god
*Turns yet another page*
Thank god it's over
And then another page
Haha
Honestly i like how you keep the piece as original to the score as possible because it gives us a benchmark so as to how we should sound before implementing the appropriate expression
But its also because of that my piano teacher aint too much of a fan of ur vids
@@linglingwannabe9135 Understandable and trying to keep it as close to the ABRSM score as possible for candidates is a prerogative, especially when it comes to tempo however artistic nuances and preferred students tempos are all considerations for the exam. Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback. Have fun playing!
Thanks for the video! It really helped me to being from knowing none of the notes to playing it smotthly. Thank you so much.🙂
Just started this, ty so much for this amazing vid

I’m 13 and I’m taking my grade 8 exams in a few months. Thank you so much for your amazing videos, they’ve helped me in literally all the grades I’ve done so far and your playing is an awesome example. I probably would have failed without them guides. Thank you! 🙏😁
Wow, thanks for such a lovely comment, Sumathi… you must work very hard at piano to be taking Grade 8 at 13! 🤩 I’m glad you have found my playing and these videos helpful and I wish you the best of luck with all you do on the piano! Remember, there are also many other videos on this channel which feature non-exam pieces - and some will be great fun to watch and maybe even try out yourself on the piano! 😁👍👍
Good luck I’m 12 taking grade 8 too
That's awesome, I'm 14 taking grade 8.

This is grade 8 tho 🙂
Outstanding Performance! Selected this piece for my Grade 8, also in 1:09 the timing in bar 41, the last last crotchet (D) is played as a minim in this video.
I’m taking my g8 exams soon so thanks for your amazing vids keep up the good work🎉

I got 145/150 for grade 8 at eight yes old tho
Cool!
Hey, Master Keyz. Can you play Allegro con brio (A:11) for me?
Hi, can I ask how did you play so flawless. Especially when one has to play a few pieces that are 5 min long each.
If you play good enough, and you can play it with memories.
From my own experience, if you practise a lot you can play anything off by heart
I’m just starting with practicing grade 8. Trying to get ready for the exam. Any tips on what to look out for within the pieces? Some of the grade 8 Abram pieces have a quite challenging tempo and beats.
Keeping the tempo steady
Wonderful rendition. 120 bpm feels too sluggish though. I don't understand why ABRSM choose pieces which are of a high technical ability, then drop the tempo so that it fits within a grade 8 range. Why not pick something of the right standard which can be played at the speed the composer likely originally intended. This really needs to be above 120 bpm, and they should expect this from Grade 8 standard.
Agreed and that's why I upped the tempo for the final grade 8 piece, it just didn't feel right so slow so brought it a tough nearer to the composers tempo
ye i have two versions of this song's sheet music and the other one said 160 bpm
hello any idea how to do the duplets over triples and the weird trill with the 6 on top? (referring to pg 3 for duplet and triplet part and pg4 trill at the end)
Try doing it super slowly and (over time) speed it up, this may take a while though….
I learned my right hand notes first and then moved to the left hand and finally together
i got the duplet part
working on the trills
Do them slows then suddenly fast, don’t t overthink it

i choosed this pieses for grade 8 exam thanks for helping.

You’re most welcome! Thanks for watching and best of luck with your exam preparations! 🤩👍👍

What about playing piano pieces with more ornaments? I like baroque pieces
What Piano do u have, like what brand. Thanks for the video.
Hi, thanks for watching. We are currently using a Yamaha Montage 8. All software and hardware is listed in the description.
I am grade 3… I can’t wait for grade 8 to play this
Srry to say when you teach grade 8 this song won’t be able to be played at test because it will be expired they change new songs every year 😢
😅
Sure there will be plenty of other good choices tho
But if ur doing a performance exam, u can choose this as ur own choicesong
Thanks
I don't understand how to play bar 86-89. The trill at the end of each bar is 6 notes and yet it's in the space of 4 in the left hand. Huh?
its kinda like the duplets over triplets except with trills. its easier if u play it fast
Is this piece supposed to be 120bpm
Time stamps
Part 1: 0:07
Part 2: 0:40
Part 3: 1:07
Part 3': 1:46
Part 4: 2:25
❤
It really helped a lot for my exam
That's great!
Did you use pedal?
Umm… I can’t answer that question
@@amongusdomino63 then why did you reply?
By the way you do not need to use pedal for the piece but in some places in could be nice to add some. Entirely down to what you think sounds nice.
THE DUPLETS OVER TRIPLETS PART IS SOO HARD
the trill part on 4th page is harder
yeah fr the timing has to be perfect@@abird3036
yep im tryna see both the triplet and the trill rn to hear how this channel plays it
Bro. Im grade 6 and i played this for competition😂
Quit being boastful. Playing a grade 8 piece for a COMPETITION is no big feat. I am only stating what is true, I do not remember asking for you to compare your skill to mine or to flex as if that would gain attention for you.@@user-fe7sf3rn5t

why is this so easy for a grade 8 piece
Any blues mate? Amazing video as always.
We have a Henry Butler piece in the works, should be up your street. Thanks for the kind words!

Hi, bar 42 rhythm is not the same as the ABRSM edition.
Yeah, I noticed this as well, Master Keyz played the rhythm from 'la Donna e mobile' (which has the exact same melody as bars 41 and 42 in Allegro).
Yeah I noticed it
@@PianoCubeYT Oh! Really?
@@amongusdomino63 yup!

Not hard for me :3
play this video at 1.25x speed to be normal speed
Yeah held back a bit by the syllabus guidelines, sometimes we wonder whether to record two versions for the same video but it might get confusing for people.
I thought this video was played to the correct tempo 120?
Nah
😮
So simple. Sure this is for grade 8. Elementary.
6 minutes long 😢

What happened here?! 1:09
No way this is grade 8 bro this is easy
Yeah, same
Saying this from experience (since I am currently doing this for my Grade8 exam) this is not easy in the slightest.
Hes playing it slow and its 8 pages
