I love how you started this video! đ I clicked because I was curious about orchid viruses, but the way you just said "there orchids are just...not...having it." It was perfect! You're perfect!!
Some of mine was like those..I washed the plant with dawn dish soap and rinsed really well, then I mixed some miracle grow soil in with the orchid growing medium then I watered and let them soak for 5 hrs , drained and now all are fabulous, one even grew a baby on the stem..and the blooms are absolutely beautiful..so basically they got a good bath, roots trimmed repot with some some miracle grow potting soil mixed in just a teaspoon per plant..â€
Hi Donni, Iâm am a relatively new orchid grower and have learned so much from you. Today you helped me understand that all orchid plants wonât grow, not matter what you do. Iâve had several that just sat doing nothing for a year: no growth, no roots just sitting. Tried putting them in intensive care. Nothing. So Bye-bye. However, I have used your intensive care procedures and saved several plants. Thank you so much!!!
You have taught me how to care for orchids and I appreciate your content! â€
I have a couple of my phals (different from yours) that has a problem starting this year. Iâm sorry you have trouble, but I guess it makes me feel better knowing someone with so much experience can have a problem too. I appreciate you sharing!!!
Both Phalaenopsis philippinensis and Phalaenopsis fuscata prefer low light intesity. During my PhD thesis period, I have killed the Phalaenopsis philippinensis due to high light intensity.đđ
I love your hair!!!
It's nice to see that I'm not the only person who has an orchid that gives them issues. I was gifted my first orchid (a Mini) about 7 years ago and over those year I've have given it the nicknamed Problem Child. It's fitting since it likes to start wilting over every little thing it doesn't like. Examples, it likes early morning sun, not after noon or evening sunlight when when the sun is partially or fully obscured later in the day, it still hates it. It hates cold water, i have to soak it in room temperature or luke warm water. If the house is too warm, it wilts, if its too cold, it wilts. Even when i move it to different areas of the house to accommodate it's needs (ex moving it closer to the heat pump in winter and farther way in summer). And it only blooms on even years not odd. And the blooms last maybe 2 weeks at best even when given food. It is thee only orchard I have that acts like this.
Glad to hear you say some orchids do so well đthen poof. đąnothing or they start to wither away. I don't do anything different. I guess sometimes they just get tired. Love all your vids. Thank you for every one! I live in northern central Florida, USA
So glad you made this video. I'm on my 3rd Mini Mark and they do the same as yours. Also the Phal. Jia Ho Summer Love seems to not do well either. Also can't grow the Cattleya Iwanagara Apple Blossom - I've had 4 of these. Everything else is doing fine. If an orchid doesn't bloom for a few years even though it is a huge and beautiful plant, it goes outside to experience the seasonal changes. When the temp gets to lower 60s (F) at night, I bring them in and then usually get blooms at their blooming time.
I have the same issues with some orchids, Dani. I also live in a very hot climate and though most of my orchids thrive, I DO have those that die or fail to thrive for no apparent reason. They will do fine, then just start to fail for no apparent reason. Iâm glad to know about your problems with mini mark, because Iâve been wanting one. My problem children have been Phal. Celebenensis, Renanthera, Epicatt Rene Marquez (two of them!), Phals Bellina and Violacea. No idea why. đą
Greetings from Cyprus đšđŸ đ yes, my Jia Ho Summer Love also has undeveloped looking leaves, though right now it has a flower spike- first time in two years after Iâve bought it. It has lots of roots, grows in a mixture of bark and sphagnum under the growth light
Hi Dany
Actually I am also living in Cyprus and I wash my catasetum and cycnoches bulbs this spring and itâs worked. I clean all old leaves and clean them all so I didnât let anything hold the water. I wash them lets say deep them in the water for 1-2 minutes and take them out after 5 minutes I dry them with kitchen towel and I check after 2-3 days if nothing is swelling I repeat the same until I see eyes swelling. After 2-3 times they start swelling. Good luck with yours â€
Oh awesome! Will try it for sure đ€
Hi Dani! I was told mini marks like to be mounted. I know you donât like mounting but it seems like they were right. Sheâs great. Also Iâm in Miami and grow outside with lots of humidity.
4:10 I'd try water culture! Where I can keep an eye on the roots. đđđ”đ·
No thank you đ€
@@MissOrchidGirl , the only reason I suggested it was because you've tried everything else... What about laca or lava rock?
Hey Dani.
Mini Mark never again for me, of the 6 I had through the years, they all had growth issues after a while. Usually it starts with a new leaf attempting to grow in a 90 degrees rotation from the axis of the others and end up almost squared, then they just stop growing after weakly trying to push further leaves and start to slowly fade away.
Heeey, I'm from Brazil, and my Catasetums are all just starting their dormancy... I feel like it is going to take a while!
For C. maxima, that might be the cool grower type. Try giving it conditions same as your V. falcata. đ
I feel so much better! I thought my Phal 'Jiao Ho Summer Love' hated me. The leaves are small and the roots grow a couple inches then stop and no flowers. It's getting another repot this summer in hopes it can do better. Also, I think mosaic virus or something similar has been attacking my Brassada orange delight 'Hilo Sunrise' and may have to dispose of it. Your video has helped me temporarily accept that sometimes it's not my fault. And it feels great!
Even vandanopsis never went well with me.. over almost 4 years, it just survives, thats all.
Thank you for showing that you struggle too.
With struggling orchids take them out of the pot and stand the roots in rain water and liquid orchid feed. They re- hydrate and the roots quickly start to grown.
Hi, no I wouldnât do that đ€
@MissOrchidGirl ..it honestly works . It gives the roots light and air, and they rehydrate. I wouldn't leave them there for long periods of time obviously. I do it with struggling orchids only or rescues.
Just quick note, be safe if things get nuts over there.
I bought a Mini Mark after seeing yours in a video a few years ago and, it is very weak and very slow growerđ©. But, oh boy, are the blooms prettyđ
I have had similar experiences with Mimi marks, which is so sad, because itâs one of my favorite phals.
Same!
Mini Mark - I had one and just died because of some damage in the crown for absolutely no reason and she died. Now I have second one, she seems a bit healthier but even if she's hydrated, her two bottom leaves still remain a bit wrinkly... It's weird but I'll give her time to decide, either live or die đ
If you are interested in this kind of things I could recommend you using aloe vera for one of your weak orchid, just as an experiment. If you aren't into that, its okay, I won't mention it again đ
I just received my Mini Mark, tiny tiny maybe a seedling. Before I could repot it the leaves started withering so when I repotted it the roots looked good. Iâm hoping it will bounce back đ
Iâve had nothing but bad luck with multiple Phal Jia Ho!! Iâve heard the same from a lot of other people as well. Such a shame because itâs gorgeous!
That's too bad. I have a Jai Ho Blueberry that couldn't be any more perfect. It's in bloom right now, incredibly healthy. Hopefully, you can find a good one to love. đș
Haveing a slow grow ,bought in june with two stem now no change, waiting for roots to grow, need patience
I have Phalaenopsis Jia Ho Summer Love for around 7 years now and it looks exactly like yours. It has nice root system but what is happening above potting medium is under performing for me for ever. It also did put out a keiki, which bloomed during first year but both mother plant and keiki appeared to be least vigorous than every other phal I owned.
Hey Danny, thanks for all your useful advice. I was visiting Cyprus for 3 weeks with my boyfriend, and I brought 3 bricks of New Zealand sphagnum moss and MSU fertilizer for you, but we never got to connect. Hopefully Iâll have better luck next time.
I have a very limited experience. However, the phals that I got in the end of 2023 seem to be growing fine, except Mini Mark which has almost no growth and looks unhappy. I had to repot it twice because of my concern that the problem was related to the potting mix. The plant seems to be better now, but its growth is still rather slow.
What is the medium you ended up potting your mini mark into. I was so excited to finally get my hands on a mini mark and Iâve had the same problem as you. Itâs now in moss in a sealed up plastic bag after about almost 2 years of trying different growing media. Any help would be appreciated.
I moved in Dec to my apartment they used to be outside growing great. But know they are dieing what can I do I love my orchards. I live in Florida blessings đ
Aprox 2 years ago, I bought Phal. bellina var. coerulea. It had flower buds. Bu never bloomed. Later, odontoglossum ring spot virus (ORSV) symptoms appeared on its leaves. I cooked it in the pressure cooker for half an hour and threw it in the trash.đđđđđ
Iâve been thinking about your conundrum for the weaker orchids. Hybrids are indeed challenging, especially if they have parentage of species that was expected to give more vigor. One commenter suggested the light intensity. That could be a factor, but I read a study about day length⊠that orchids originating near the equator donât seem to have much change in the day length through out the year compared to those further away. It has me playing with my light timers, maybe giving more in summer than in winter for some hybrids, and shorter more even day length year round for the ones I have that are struggling. The jury is out, but the shorter day length seems to help my Mini MarkâŠ
I have Vandaenopsis Pulcherrimin (Asc. miniata X Phal. pulcherrima) it does very well for me, I got it July 2023 and itâs bloomed twice already. I have mine potted moss/bark in my Milsbo. Itâs a prolific rooter. My Mini Mark âHolmâ was in continuous sequential flower from June 2023 until May 2024 when it started a second spike but I cut them both to let it rest. Hope it continues to do well for years to come.
are you in the uk?

Oh my god i have had the Schokoladenprinz as well and it died 2x đą
12:45 - I bought a Cattleya from a nursery, and it arrived looking like this, but on all the leaves. I suspected virus and lo and behold, it tested positive for Cymbidium Mosaic Virus. I sent pictures of the test and the plant... Only to be told that instances of virus from plants imported from Taiwan were to be expected, and that I could send the plant back for a refund. I couldn't believe it. I was like "why would you want it back? Are you going to sell it on to the next unlucky buyer?" I chose to destroy the plant, let them keep my money, and make certain NEVER to recommend said nursery to anyone.
Please tell us which nursery to avoid
I think I have an orchid with this đą
@@anndwandner3664 I'm not sure what the consensus is in the orchid hobby. If you have a bad experience, is it okay to publicly tell on it? It was one bad experience, but it did shake my confidence in said nursery to the point where I won't be using them again. I wouldn't blame a company for selling a plant with an undetected condition - some plants are symptom free, and you can't expect nurseries to waste a 10 dollar kit on every single plant. My issue was that they sent me the rattiest looking plant, and when it did indeed test positive, they had the gall to ask me to send it back. The only acceptable response IMO would have been: "Our apologies. Please destroy the plant. Would you prefer a refund or a replacement?"
@@Meskarune Sorry to hear it. If it is indeed virus, then it won't recover from it. It might even infect the rest of your collection. If it's a very special plant and you have the option, you could spring for a virus test kit. If it is something inexpensive and easily replaced, I would simply err on the side of caution and get rid of it.
@@anndwandner3664 I made a long response in which I didn't name the nursery but questioned whether or not to do so, but it seems it got deleted. I stand by my stance that the nursery's request was extremely untrustworthy. I.e. requesting I send back a ratty looking plant which had tested positive for Cymbidium mosaic virus (and possibly selling it again), rather than simply ask me to destroy the plant and offer compensation.
I just got a mini mark this past month aaand .. it came with 2 large leaves and 2 tiny leaves on top .. I was taken aback because it has clearly not been doing well .. I repoted it and the top leaf has started growing like crazy .. soo my hypothesis at this point is that mini mark really needs to have a suuuper airy media setup refreshed quite regularly .. I am really interested how it will go with that one, because the flowers are just amazing, so I hope it will be good for me :)
All 3 of my Phalaenopsis, are finally doing GREAT, and are now just sending out Leaves! But, all 3 of mine, are SLOW sending up the leaves, at First!! I think itâs more focused on the roots system.
The one with the Dark Edges, I have a Purple White version, and thatâs the one that just putting out leaves now.
Have you tried 2 minced Cloves of Garlic, for your plants that have a Virus?!? Place in a Liter of Water for an hour, and use that to water them.
I have a hybrid that I've purchased two times, and she has died both times. Prone to fungal infections. Phals. Kaleidoscope. The first time, she came to me sick. The second time, I was treating her with Physan20 to prevent fungal infections just in case. I still lost her after a year and one blooming. đ„ Have you had her, Danny?
The doritis vanda hybrid, try placing it near the vanda falcata you have. Maybe it wants a cooler condition?
Hi my current minimark came from a italian breeder and so far is happy and healthy many years. But my previous mini's did the same... I think most are bad clones or bad stock from breading.
My Summer Love also grows âweirdâ and habe the same issue with the roots stopping even though they are inside the pot. I purchased mine from Brookside Orchids in 2021. She has bloomed several times but she does grow weird. So I do not think it is youđ â€
You look gorgeous today. Love the red hair and glasses!
Hi đđ» from Southern California! Thanks for a very helpful video. I have the same types of stunted orchids as youâve shown and itâs so helpful to know sometimes it really is something going on with the orchid. I also have 2 Vandopsis typesâŠboth are not good growers and for the last several years just linger. And my Phal pulcherrima var laotica always looks horrible with dry leathery leaves. It grows a ton of beautiful roots but always looks dehydrated. Iâve had it for over 2 years. Who really knows but definitely theyâre dysfunctional! I was wondering if you have any Cochleanthes type orchids? I know you love fragrance and these are amazing! I was worried growing in my warmer climate but they are doing great in self watering setups. Just a suggestion if you havenât gotten into them yet. I often think as Iâm enjoying their fragrance and ease of growing how MOG would love these! Bye for now..best wishes on your move and thank you for sharing your expertise. Hi Maya! Well if yours is doing the same thing, then I think itâs highly likely itâs just a seasoning thing, letâs stay calm haha đ€
I have issues with Chantilly lace..the new growth just blackens and dies out.not like over watered and rots
đ well I am laughing and this is because of jia ho summer love I love this orchid but is so weird!! have it for 5 years now once bloomed don't know what I did right! it has a power scent and long last bloom period ...though if I breath a it around her she bud blust if I move her bud blust if cold same if staring same and so on.....đđđđ
I think can go on lower light same with roots they grow to an extent and then stop...we live for the difficulties!
I think we are just having bad luck. It is always the one we want the most :( that does the worst. My mini mark is withering away too. It got a keiki as well and now that one is not doing so well.
My 2 Mini Marks behaved exactly the same way! I was so puzzled why I can't make a simple Phalaenopsis grow! No more.
Have you done a haul from Secret Garden? I've had lots of issues with the orchids I've bought from them. Many don't grow or die soon after I've unboxed them (without a long transport). Also, I suspect virus issues with their supply as the leaves are strangle spotted and have damage also in the new leaves. Not buying from them anymore. And it's a shame as they have quite good prices and lots of variety.
May I ask which plants you have bought as I consider an order? Thanks in advance and many regards from Vienna!
I've ordered twice from there and both time several orchids (Phalaenopsis, cattleya, dendrobium phalaenopsis....). The second order I placed because I wanted to see if the quality was consistently bad or just a fluke. Well, the quality is consistently bad (or I'm very unlucky with the orchids I get). They were mostly rootless but also poor leaves and some immediately got crown rot so goodbye..Some never grew so aren't very vigorous just like Dani's orchid. .I made a reclamation but they said that I should have reclaimed within x days from shipping but when I got the orchids the time to reclaim had already expired. They gave me no discount and were rude and didn't write back anymore. I ordered to Germany. Never again from this nursery.
@@toughcookie8025 OOOHHH NO! I was hoping you just ordered once and only one species of orchids e. g. Phals and not all different types of plants. Miracle Orchids made several unboxings back in the day and the plants looked great.
I experienced the same with Orchid Garden, also 2 orders, you know... a 2nd chance but the output was not better. I tried my best but some plants died within short, e. g. just rotted. So I also reclaimed but got the same quite rude reaction for not complaining immediately. The worst were a few Vandas which first dropped most of their roots and then the leaves too (stamrot) and it also was good weather, not cold or hot while transport... just frustrating. Many thanks for your reply đ You definetly saved me a lot of money! Wish you a relaxing weekend!
I got mini mark from schwerter and mini mark full peloric (2 plants!) from orchid deluxe this year. The normal mini mark starts to grow new leave and roots for me, but the mini mark peloric shows not much growth except roots đ I lost one of the mini mark peloric due to stem rot eventhough it is potted the same way.... (Still trying to revive it as I saw some video that shows possibility to revive phal as long as roots system are green and good still)... Finger crossed for me đą
I just lost a cattleya orchid plant. Theyâre out on the balcony, itâs been very hot, noticed spots on the leaves, it was the scale pest, tried water and white vinegar, the leaves got black. I have a new plant that is getting a bloom growing in the sheath but this one gets tiny ants. Which insect control can I use, and should I bring the plants inside for the hottest months ahead? Thank you.
I have 2 Orchids and I just repotted them but they look so unhappy what am I doing wrong?

I ran across someone who has an original Mini Mark. Makes you wonder if itâs either the specific clone thatâs an issue or something happening in the cloning process. Mine seems to be doing ok, but Iâve only had it a year.
Hi, not sure what an original Mini Mark is supposed to be? Theoretically there is only 1, the one registered in 1992 by Breckinridge.. and I donât know if they still have it really lol đ€
@@MissOrchidGirl oh. Sorry. A plant from the original batch of seedlings. Which makes you go âhmmâ in light of how many reporting their clones not thriving long term.
Off topic question.... I was gifted an orchid with two stems of white flowers. It has now rebloomed but the flowers are a beautiful crimson with white edges. Any idea why it changed?
According to Danny, many orchids can do the magic trick of changing like that.
@@davegrimstead8289 Thank you. I much prefer this color.
What do you use to treat pests on orchids?
Hi, depends on the pest :) hydrogen peroxide 3% on snails, oily solutions for most others (look up horticultural mineral oil for plants), mineral oil leaf shine for spot treating, spinosad for thrips, isopropyl alcohol for mealy bugs again spot treating some areas⊠thatâs about it :))
Danny and many others have videos on treating all kinds of pests/bugs. I just used what Danny suggested on my mites. Worked great. Saved my plants
You mentioned that you got rid of thrips, how?
With spinosad :)
I have had an infection of tiny little bugs that seems to be breading in the orchid bark. How can I get rid of them?
What kind of bugs? If it's tiny, white and jump around when you move the pot, it could be springtails, those are actually beneficial as they eat molds and decaying materials.
@sjusovare no they are tiny black flying bugs, like fruit flys
Fungus gnats perhaps, is the bark old? If so a report could help
@sjusovare no, the bark is new. I think the nats seemed to have come from the new bark.
Hey Danni. Now that you have your very own CZcamsr EU parlament member in Cyprus I would love to hear your opinion. Iâm using cinnamon water to spray and what a difference. Water boiled cooled and powdered cinnamon stirred in and then filtered to make a caramel color.
Maybe the small leaves on some orchids are caused by the pH being too high? I saw an article from @therightpaph and he observed that when he lowered the pH to, I think... 6 , that leaves of his Phal. Schilleriana became bigger. I did this and wow the difference it makes is magical đâ€
High pH issues are possible with a potting mix of bark and coconut coir, but unlikely to occur with mostly sphagnum moss, it's much more likely to go the other way around and becomes too acidic at measure that the mix decays
Iâve always had trouble with Phal Las Vegas. For me it grows insanely slow if at all, or gets a virus and then just dies. Iâve had 3 now in the last 3/4 years and finally got one thatâs actually showing progress fairly fastđ„čđ„°
