Great idea. I’ll have to put together my own list. “Influence” is an important word given what is adds and the choices that are opened up to us.

Awesome that you pulled out Surrealistic Pillow. Such an amazing album that hardly gets its due.
It’s definitely a top 10 album and one that goes with The Beatles and Dylan.

Great list here Glen, and very you! Beatles, Eagles, Hartford, the Dead. All classic. Wow, nice dig at my head!

Some great albums, and more importantly, the most important to you! Some I've heard, some I haven't, but all great ones! I couldn't agree with you more, the best music is the kind that opens your ears and changes your life.

Dylan, Airplane, and Zappa could certainly cause one to rethink everything. Maybe later Beatles too but early Beatles, as great as it was, seems a bit light. But that's a perspective from someone who came of age a bit later than you. It's hard for us younger folks to fathom how things changed with that Sullivan appearance.
I inherited a couple pre-Walsh Eagles albums but haven't listened to them in decades. I need to give them another chance at impressing me.

Glen I must say I enjoy watching your videos for a number of reasons, the main being (and it shone brightly in this one) is the passion and the love, in the way you talk about music.
    Thank you!

Enjoyed your video! I’m about the same age as yourself so The Beatles music changed my life forever Interesting that you’re love of banjo came from a Led Zeppelin song!!

Hi Glen!!! so cool to see those albums and how they changed your music life, for good..... and kind of surprise to hear how the Eagles had a huge impact too, because seeing the beatles or Dylan was expected, also Ry Cooder and Bela Fleck. cheers and be well

Great list! My first Ry Cooder album (on the way to getting everything he's done) was Boomer's Story. It took a fairly long time to grow on me, but once it clicked the effect was permanent! I wasn't any kind of Grateful Dead fan until I heard Reckoning, and it's still my favourite.

Great video Glen. It reflects you perfectly, no doubt. Like you said, after The Beatles and Bob Dylan everything else falls in line. I admire your curiosity and thirst for new music, something I'm lacking. Keep that passion!!! Outstanding job on this.

Hi Glen, good video ! Music reminds me of certain times in my life, but I can't think of any changes that happened because of music . Maybe I have a different idea than you of life changing. Take care !

I listened to the Bela Fleck Rhapsody in Blue album. Good stuff although the orchestra may take a few listens. I havent listened to Bela in a while. I have the first five Flecktones albums plus Live Art. I also have his solo album Tales From the Acoustic Planet, which is my favourite. If you like mandolin virtuocity, i can suggest a couple, although physical product may be difficult to come by. The Jazz Mandolin Project is one. The other would be Col Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit's self titled live offering.

@GlenKellawayfromthebasement Yes, the Col. was a mentor for a lot of great musicians including Derek Trucks. His life story is worth reading.

Glen, if haven't already, check out the live Bluegrass Sessions from 1999's Strawberry Festival with Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Brian Sutton, Jerry Douglas, Gabe Witcheer, and Mark Schatz. It's a hoot with some incredible jammimg.

@@GlenKellawayfromthebasement I should have mentioned that I don't think this is an official release. I got a lossless digital copy a long time ago but I just noticed that there's a video of the concert on CZcams on a channel by "max mcgloin" and it sounds pretty good. I know you don't stream but perhaps make this one exception. 😊

Interesting journey. I'd really have to think what were mine.
The last album that kinda changed my life was Samantha Fishs Kill or Be Kind in 2021. I have always been into music but for a couple of years I wasn't interested in newer artists for a while. And she was the first artist that I discovered through Spotify and that I got into through streaming and CZcams videos. It's not a super outstanding album, still love it though, it got me connect to a younger music scene, and I got into a lot of different new artists since.
The first one was probably Born in the USA, first Springsteen album I got, first Rock album I got. Opened my ears for a lot of other bands and artists from Neil Young to Fleetwood Mac or Queen.
Nirvanas Nevermind and Björks Debut were important in the 90s. Late 90s, early 2000th Miles Davis Kind of Blue got me into Jazz.

    • @GlenKellawayfromthebasement
      @GlenKellawayfromthebasement  Před 6 měsíci +1

That is an important catalyst that opened your ears to exploring newer artists..a perfect example.

@@GlenKellawayfromthebasement that's right, and these albums don't have to be the greatest of all time, not even your favorite of the artist, genre or era, it just has to tenderly kick you in the arse hard enough to flip a switch in your brain.

What's going on here? You have 47 views at this point and I am the first to comment. I knew going in the banjo was going to play a prominent role. I thought for sure we were going to see the Dewolff album.....

Well, those are definitely your usual suspects, Glen, although I hadn't realized that Jefferson Airplane were quite so high up your list.
Must listen to that Grateful Dead album and a lot more Ry Cooder.
